2. Eat More Fiber
A person who is suffering from constipation will often be told to increase the amount of fiber they are eating. The reason for this advice is because it is thought that increasing the amount of fiber that a person eats will increase the consistency and the bulk of their bowel movements. This makes the bowel movements easier to pass. Fiber supplements may help as well.
It is important to note that the type of fiber that you add to your diet makes a difference. There are two general categories of fiber. Insoluble fibers are found in whole grains, wheat bran, and vegetables. These will add bulk to your stools and pass more easily and quickly through the digestive system. Soluble fibers are found in things like nuts, seeds, barley, oat bran, peas, lentils, and beans. They are also found in some vegetables and fruits. This type of fiber will absorb water and create a paste. This helps to soften stools and will improve consistency.
