Anemia is something that is pretty common among people that have anorexia. The definition of anemia is when the body does not have enough healthy blood cells – the red kind. This means that oxygen does not travel throughout the body like it should and there are dozens of other problems that can be caused by anemia. People with anorexia it tend to have lower white cell counts as well.
But anemia can definitely be a symptom of anorexia, especially when you combine it with some of the other symptoms that are on this list or with your own knowledge of the person you’re attempting to diagnose. Normally, you have to confirm a diagnosis of anemia with the doctor, and people with anorexia may have other abnormal lab findings like low thyroid levels and low levels of other hormones. They may also have a slower heart rate and labs may show lowered potassium as well.
