3. Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis is a condition that causes the spinal canal to narrow. This puts pressure on the spine and nerves and can cause pain in the lower back and on either side. In addition to back pain, the condition can also cause the legs and arms to go numb. Some people with spinal stenosis have no symptoms until it becomes severe.
It is more common in people who are over the age of 60, but it can affect people who are young also. Osteoarthritis is the main cause of spinal stenosis, but other spinal changes and common wear and tear can also lead to it. It left untreated; it can worsen over time.
Common treatments include medications and spinal fusion surgery to correct the problem and improve spine stability. Some people experience neurological problems caused by spinal stenosis. If this occurs, surgery may be recommended. Most people see an improvement with medication and do not need surgery.
