The shortness of breath may come on suddenly. This is caused by fluid building up in the walls or the pleura of the lungs. When this fluid starts to build up it can become difficult to catch your breath. This shortness of breath may or may not be accompanied by chest pain.
If you are suddenly short of breath and you cannot seem to take in a deep breath no matter what you are doing, call 911 as you need to get medical attention as fast as possible in order to avoid long term side effects. This is a serious condition and must be dealt with properly right away.
