Search for Articles Here >>

If you are thinking about getting breast implants, whether it is for reconstruction after having a mastectomy or for simple breast augmentation, chances are you may be overwhelmed trying to determine the facts from the fiction. It can be difficult to sort through all of the different options that are available.

Choosing to have breast implants is a big decision and not something that you should take lightly. For this reason, doing your research about the different options and choosing the right doctor to perform cosmetic surgery is very important.

There are a few facts about this cosmetic surgery that can become difficult to navigate as well. You want to make sure that you are ready for not only the operation but the recovery process, as well as recovery, can be intense for some.

Here are some things that you may not know about breast augmentation.

1. Silicone or Saline

When it comes to breast implants there are two choices. Both saline implants and silicone implants are readily available. The silicone version of breast implants has been around for longer.

Saline implants are more recent but have taken over as being some of the most popular. Both of these options are safe. There has been extensive research done on both silicone and saline implants. As of 2009, all implants have to be approved by the FDA.

Implants that were made before 2000 were not approved by the FDA, but were used anyway. This is where many of the issues from implants that you hear about come from.

If you are considering breast augmentation it is important to discuss the different options with your doctor in order to determine which type is best for your particular situation. Many cosmetic surgeons have a preference for the type of implants that they use.
