15 Common Causes of A Broken Toe

Search for Articles Here >>

Foot injuries are quite common and among those the most often experienced is a broken toe. The small bones of the toes are called phalanges. Your foot has 26 bones in all, 14 of those being phalanges. With so many small targets, it makes sense that you will break at least one toe in your lifetime. When there is trauma to the foot, most often one or more toe bones will break. This can be caused by something as simple as a dropped heavy object or even kicking a ball at the wrong angle during sports play.

Trauma is not the only way your bones can break. Prolonged repetitive movements can also cause stress fractures in your bones or even hairline fractures. You may think that this only happens with the hands or arms, but your toes can also suffer the same type of injury due to prolonged repetitive movements.

1. Blunt force trauma

Breaking a bone can occur in an endless number of ways. Broken toes, on the other hand, are most often caused by direct trauma to the foot. This can be in the form of someone hitting the foot with a hard object or running into something hard that causes a break. Breaks, fractures, sprains and tendon damage caused by sporting activity or accidents are routinely treated with a combination of medication and physical therapy.

The treatment choice depends on the severity of the injury or toe break. Physical violence is also a standard source of toe fractures. Assaults with fists, feet, or objects are causes of minor damage such as black eyes, and bruising to major damage such as broken noses and jaws, even major damage such as broken eye sockets, which can result in blindness.

Using the feet as a weapon either in street fights or in organized fights such as MMA can also result in frequently broken toes.
