2. Numbness
When a person breathes out too much carbon dioxide, it’s not uncommon for them to feel numbness or tingling in their fingers, hands, toes, feet, or other parts of the body. This symptom usually comes on suddenly and can be severe. It may be accompanied by muscle spasms, or it may appear on its own. Because numbness is a common symptom of many other health problems, including just poor circulation, most people do not take it seriously.
They may try moving around to get the blood circulating to help make the numbness go away. When the numbness and tingling are caused by Alkalosis, moving around may not stop it and can even make it more severe.
The numbness only goes away once carbon dioxide levels return to normal. Medical attention may be necessary, or a person may be able to restore their level themselves by breathing into a paper bag and then breathing that air in again.
