3. Vitamin D deficiency
Vitamin D is an essential vitamin that your body needs to maintain several of the systems in your body. Vitamin D acts like a hormone and every cell in your body carries a receptor for this essential vitamin, including the cells in your bones. You absorb vitamin D from the food you eat and from the sun. It is important to get at least 400–800 IU a day to maintain your health, though vitamin D deficiency is more common than you may realize.
Having too little vitamin D in your blood for an extended period can lead to brittle bones that are more prone to buckle fractures. Children, in particular, often suffer from a lack of proper nutrient levels due to picky eating, less time outdoors, and higher amounts of topical sunscreen use.
All of these factors can cause a deficiency that leads to bones that are more prone to buckle fractures.
