3. Counting Breaths
Another way that you can increase the strength of your lungs and decrease your risk of developing pulmonary edema is to simply count your breaths. To do this you will first want to count how long one of your natural breaths takes.
First, count when you regularly inhale and exhale. Once you know about where your regular breathing lies on the number scale, you can then count your breaths with intention. Breathe in and count to at least five. Then exhale on a count of five as well. This allows you to focus on your breathing and will help to increase the capacity of the lungs.
Once you are breathing comfortably to a count of five in and five out, increase the count by one. Keep adding in a count until you are comfortable with the amount of time it takes to both fills and empties the lungs.
