3. Swelling
A gout attack does not just cause pain but also swelling. As the uric acid builds up, the body will respond with an immune reaction to try and drive it out.
Thus the area around the joint can become enlarged and red and this can even extend up your leg and past your knee. You may find that touching the swelling causes additional pain and discomfort as well.
Try applying a cold compress to get some slight relief.
