21 Home Remedies for Heartburn

Search for Articles Here >>

Heartburn is something that you need to experience to really appreciate for what it is. That is to say, that it is much more upsetting and painful than it sounds on paper, which is why it is so often confused with more serious issues such as heart attack.

It’s called heart burn but of course it has nothing to do with the heart. Rather, heartburn is caused by the sphincter between the stomach and the esophagus (called the esophageal sphincter) which opens up and then allows small amounts of stomach acid to find their way back up where they then burn really rather severely.

This is a painful experience that isn’t just felt in the stomach and the chest (behind the heart, hence the name) but can also affect your back and your neck. It then leads to acid reflux – the return of acid and food into the mouth – and can ruin your sleep and prevent you from enjoying your food!

Bad times. And it tends to come on just when you’re not expecting it and without any kind of warning. Not good!

But there is some good news. If you are a little prone to this condition, then there are a few things you can do to try and ease the symptoms, reduce the pain and prevent it from happening again in future. Read on for 21 different home remedies for heartburn…

1.  Baking Soda

One of the most commonly suggested and most effective treatments for heartburn is baking soda. Take just a spoonful of sodium bicarbonate which you should have somewhere around the home and you’ll be able to reduce the gnawing and burning feeling that comes from heartburn. Baking soda works because it has a high pH and that in turn can neutralize the stomach acid that is causing you all that grief.

To use, take half a teaspoon of baking soda and add to a glass of water around 8 ounces. Now stir it thoroughly and then drink. This will help you to gain immediate relief as the acid is neutralized and becomes much less harsh on your insides!
