A folate deficiency is a deficiency caused by a lack of folic acid. Folic acid is another name for Vitamin B9. Folic acid or Vitamin B9 works with Vitamin B12 and Vitamin C to help the body break down, make, and use new proteins. It also helps create red and white blood cells in your body. Folic acid even helps make DNA, which is the building block of the body that carries our genetic information.

Because folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin, it is not stored within the fat tissue in your body. And, for this reason, any leftover amounts of it can exit when you urinate. Also, since folate is not stored within the body in large amounts, your body can become deficient in it if your diet is low in folic acid. Green leafy vegetables and liver are foods that are rich in folic acid.

There are many different known causes of folate deficiency including the following.

1. Not enough Folic Acid in your Diet

If you are not eating the right foods with high amounts of folic acid in them, you will end up with a folate deficiency. The best foods with folic acid in them include broccoli, chickpeas, asparagus, brown rice, and Brussel sprouts. Eating the right amount of many of these foods, even a variety of them, will provide you with the proper amount of folic acid to prevent a folate deficiency.

Those who tend to end up with a folate deficiency because of their diet are those who eat unhealthy foods a lot of the time or even people who are on weight-loss diets or fad diets.

You can easily get these delicious foods in your diet by eating some a few times per day without overdoing it and still losing the weight you want to lose. Most of these are vegetables, which are good for you for losing weight, as well as maintaining a healthy weight.

2. Malabsorption

Some people who suffer from certain diseases, such as coeliac disease, can have a malabsorption problem with folic acid. This means that because of these diseases, you may not be able to absorb folic acid which in turn can cause a folate deficiency. Finding out what disease you are suffering from and ways to treat it is your first step in your body starting to absorb folic acid a little better.

Coeliac disease is a disease in your small intestines that makes it become inflamed and not able to absorb the nutrients your body needs. Not only can this disease cause you to become folate deficient but it can also cause you to suffer from other symptoms including bloating, diarrhea, and even pain in your abdomen. So if you start having these symptoms excessively, you should see a doctor and get the disease diagnosed which could be in turn causing you to suffer from folate deficiency as well.

3. Urinating Frequently

Peeing a lot more can cause you to pee out a lot of the nutrients that your body takes in. This also includes folic acid. It doesn’t matter if you are getting a diet rich in folic acid, if you are urinating a lot, you are losing this important nutrient.

Many things can cause you to pee a lot more frequently than normal. Some things to cause you to urinate a lot more often include drinking excessive amounts of any kind of liquid, especially water, eating different water-soluble fruits and vegetables, and even medications can cause you to pee a lot more.

A few ways to combat this is to try to eat fewer amounts of these water-soluble fruits and vegetables, drink a little less water or other liquids, and ask your doctor which medications could be causing your excessive urination. Once you find out, cut back on them or cut them out altogether if you can.

4. Taking Certain Medications

Certain medications can not only reduce the amount of folate your body takes in but they can even prevent your body from absorbing any folic acid at all. Some of these medications are those that treat seizures, methotrexate, cholestyramine, and sulfasalazine. Although you may be on these medications, your gynecologist or OBGYN, if you are pregnant, will be made aware of the medications you are on and she or he will keep an eye on them if necessary.

However, if you are sure that your folate deficiency is caused by one of your medications, you should speak with your doctor. He or she will find out which medication it is that is causing the folic acid deficiency and will cut your dosage down and slowly take you off of it.

Once you find out which medication it is, you can eventually stop taking that medication. This is important, especially for pregnant women who need the right amount of folic acid for a healthy baby.

5. Requiring Folic Acid more than Normal

Sometimes, your body will require folic acid more than normal and when this happens, and when the body is absorbing it more frequently, you could end up with a folate deficiency. This is especially true if your body cannot meet the demand for it.

Your body requires it more often than usual happens when the following occur:
