A clavicle fracture is when the bone that connects the shoulder and breastbone are broken. In order to get the clavicle fracture fixed, medical treatment is needed. A lot of the time, people don’t have the funds to go to a doctor, so they may just let the clavicle fracture get worse. If treatment is sought, the injury can go away within days to weeks. The longer you wait to seek treatment, the worse it will get. You may even have to have surgery so that you can use your shoulder again.

There are home remedies that can relieve a clavicle fracture until you’re able to see a doctor for treatment. Even though home remedies are good, they are no substitute for getting the clavicle fracture fixed.

Here is a list of eight home remedies to relieve a clavicle fracture. Most of the items you may already have at home.

1. Icing the clavicle fracture will relieve the symptoms.

Icing eases the pain and swelling. It should be done several times a day. When icing the area, place the ice cubes in a towel, so that the ice doesn’t have to be directly on your skin. Let it sit on your shoulder for about 15 to 20 minutes. Don’t try to move your shoulder since it might feel as though the pain has eased. If you keep moving it, it will get worse.

Ice the area every couple of hours. You may be able to do it sooner. Whenever you feel pain, ice the area. The pain will ease for a bit. The swelling should go down in a few days.

Also, if you have a bruise on your shoulder, it will eventually go away with icing. If it doesn’t always go to a doctor. There may be something more serious going on.

2. Rest is one of the best home remedies you could do to relieve a clavicle fracture.

When you rest, don’t rest on the side where the injury is. It may even feel bad by sleeping on the other side. In order to avoid pain, lie on your back and place a couple of pillows underneath your shoulder. If you’re not used to sleeping on your back, this may be uncomfortable. You’ll need as much rest as possible. Even when you’re watching television, you should lie down on the couch instead of raised up.

When you do rise, take your time because you’ll feel the pain. It might be a good idea to have someone help you up and down. You should rest a lot while your shoulder is injured. If you’re at school, this may be a problem, but once you go home, lie down for a couple of hours before doing anything else.

3. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as Motrin and Tylenol can help relieve inflammation, swelling, and pain.

Use the pain relievers as directed. The medicine shouldn’t be taken for a long period of time. It could cause the healing of your shoulder to slow down. It is always good to take medicine with a full glass of water and food. By eating food with it, it avoids having stomach pains. Some pain relievers make you drowsy, so it is a good idea to not drive when you take them. Since they relieve your pain, you will feel good and want to rest.

Sometimes pain occurs before it’s time to have another dose. Wait until it’s time for another dose so that you won’t experience side effects. Most pain relievers need to be taken every four to six hours. Take the full dose, so that the pain doesn’t come back so quickly.

4. Epsom salt compress is a home remedy that will relieve the symptom of a clavicle fracture.

Heat water in a pan to a warm temperature. The water doesn’t need to be hot or you’ll cause a burn on your shoulder. Place a cup of Epsom salt in a large bowl with the warm water. Dip a clean cloth in the Epsom salt mixture, wring it out, and place it on the shoulder. Let it sit on the shoulder until it cools. Repeat the process until the water cools. This can be done a few times a day.

The best time to do it is at night before going to bed. This may help you to sleep better without the pain. The warm compress will help the swelling to go down as well. Every time you do the Epsom salt rub, use a clean towel and mixture. An infection may occur if you do.

5. Muscle rub is a home remedy to relieve a clavicle fracture.

The muscle rub to use is cold therapy. Use as directed. It may stink, but it will relieve the pain from the fracture. Every time you use the muscle rub, massage it gently onto the shoulder area. Be gentle with you rub it in. It should be completely rubbed into the skin. You’ll want to be gentle, especially if the area is tender. Wash the area thoroughly every time you use it. It won’t work as well with a dirty shoulder. Even though your shoulder may start feeling better, try not to move it.

If you try to move it too fast and it’s not healed, it’ll get worse. Wait until you’re able to see a physical therapist move the shoulder. A physical therapist will show you the proper way to handle the shoulder area without further injury.

6. Strengthening exercises will relieve a clavicle fracture.

A physical therapist will show you do some exercises with you in his or her office, but there are some you can do at home. Stand with your arms to the side and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Do this slowly and hold for about six seconds. Repeat this exercise eight to 10 times.

Another exercise requires you to stand with your back against the wall. Raise your hands against your head the best way you can. Try to keep your arms against the wall and slowly lower them with your elbows bent. While doing this, squeeze your shoulder blades together. Do this exercise no more than 12 times. This exercise can also be done standing without standing against the wall.

For the next exercise, you’ll need a stick. While lying on the floor with your knees bent, hold the stick in your hand with your palms facing down. Slowly raise your arms as far as you can over your head. Do this for no more than four times.

The sling needs to be worn all of the time. You can make your own sling by using a clean town or scarf and tying it over your shoulder and arm. Make sure when you tie it, it’s not too tight. You don’t want to cause more pain to the injured area. The only time you should take the sling off is when you take a shower or doing strengthening exercises. Place it back on afterward. You may need help when placing it on your shoulder.

When you sit, try not to lie against it because you’ll experience pain. Continue to wear the sling until your doctor gives you the okay to take it off. The doctor may not tell you to take it off until it heals completely, during your physical therapy sessions, and bathing.

While your shoulder is healing, you’ll need to eat vegetables, fruits, and meats, for example. If you want something sweet, eat an apple. It will be difficult at first to not eat fast food and carbonated beverages. Make sure you drink plenty of water because you’ll get dehydrated.

It is recommended that you drink half of your weight in water. You’ll feel much better as well when you are eating the right foods. You’ll notice that you have more energy and sleep better. The redness and swelling may go away quickly as well.

The physical therapist will notice that you have more energy when you do the exercises. You’ll be healed from the clavicle fracture in no time.
