A torus fracture, also commonly known as a buckle fracture is one of the most common injuries seen in children. Kid’s bones are much softer and flexible making them more susceptible to this type of break than any other age group. In this type of break, one side of the bone will fracture while leaving the other side of the bone without disruption. This is also known as an incomplete fracture when seen in teens or adults. Children suffer from two main forms of incomplete bone fractures.

Greenstick fractures are a form of tension injury. These occur when one part of the bone is pulled too far to one side. A buckle fracture is a compression injury that occurs when a part of the bone is compressed on one side. This compression causes a crumpling type effect on a single side of the bone. Only children are able to develop buckle fractures.

1. Tenderness

When too much force is applied to a bone, it will result in it being broken. Buckle fractures have a wide range of causes, but they result in one side of the bone being broken while the other remains intact. In most cases with a buckle fracture, the nerves, blood vessels, joints and muscles in the surrounding area are also affected. The damage to the surrounding areas can cause tenderness and pain.

Damage to the soft tissue can cause visible bruising. The bruised areas will be tender to the touch. If there is swelling, that can increase the tenderness around the injured area. The bones in your body are also surrounded by nerve endings. These nerves get irritated when a bone breaks and can cause tenderness until the wound heals.

Buckle fractures are known to be tender to the touch, in some cases touching the limb that is injured can cause extreme pain.

2. Weakness

Your body is strong enough to carry your weight and to handle most common activities. The muscles surrounding your bones not only give them support, but they are also offered support to help guide your movements.

When a bone suffers a buckle fracture, it is no longer able to offer a regular amount of support to the rest of your body. The muscles in the area around the break will also suffer due to nerve injury, spasms, and swelling. One of the most common symptoms of those suffering from a buckle fracture is a notable weakness in the injured limb.

The weakness of the bone and muscle in the injured area is not usually permanent. However, there may be lingering stiffness and weakness of the tendons and ligaments even after the buckle fracture has healed.

Buckle fractures by their very nature destabilize the limb. Because only one side of the bone is broken, it can cause extreme weakness in the limb.

3. Numbness

When the bones break or are pushed out of alignment, it can cause nerves to become pinched and numb. A buckle fracture may only affect one side of the bone, but if there is a nerve in the area affected it can cause a lack of sensation. Loss of blood flow to the nerves from a buckle fracture can also cause the area around the injury to become numb. Buckle fractures by their very nature result in massive amounts of swelling and bruising.

This swelling can cause too much pressure to be placed on the nerves which can cause numbness to develop. Lack of feeling paired with deformity are clear symptoms of buckle fractures.

Acute trauma such as a sudden buckle fracture, or a complex buckle fracture can cause a person to go into shock. When a person goes into shock, it can cause numbness in the location of the injury or over the whole body.

4. Discoloration of the digits

Breaking your arms or legs is much easier and common than you may realize. If you have suffered an injury to the arms or legs and noticed that your fingers or toes have altered colors either right away, or after a day or so, chances are the nerves are damaged and the bone is broken. A typical symptom of a buckle fracture is discoloration of the fingers or toes. This can be a result of deep bruising, swelling, or because a vein has become pinched between the joints.

Anytime that you suffer an injury to your extremities that results in discolored digits, you should seek medical treatment. Discolored digits can mean that there is a damaged nerve or vein that needs to be corrected in order to heal properly.

In some cases, discolored digits may mean that instead of a simple fracture, you may be suffering from a compound fracture or a shattered bone.

5. Pain

Typically, fracturing a bone is extremely painful. Periodically, a fractured bone will merely present with mild discomfort. Most often, the injured area of the bone will give off some sort of painful response. The level of pain will depend on the severity of the break. Often, the area of the injury will be too painful to allow any movement. If a broken bone doesn’t puncture the skin, and the pain level is moderate to mild, it may be hard to understand that medical attention may be needed.

Pain that comes and goes is also recurrent with buckle fracture injuries. Any amount of pressure placed on the break can trigger severe pain. Buckle fractures, in particular, are almost always extremely painful.

Buckle fractures affect one side of the bone and more often than not, don’t break the skin. When a bone is broken in this matter, the swelling and pressure cause intense pain.

6. Swelling

Swelling in the injured area is one of the most classic symptoms of a buckle fracture or other type of fracture. All broken bones bleed to some extent. The edema, which is the term for bleeding, will also cause a person to feel pain in the injury site. Muscles around the broken bone may try to hold them in place. This can cause painful spasms that increase bleeding and swelling. This swelling between the layers of fat, muscle, and skin are the most notable symptoms of a buckle fracture.

Any injury to the body can cause the liquid to seep into the soft tissue which will result in swelling. Swelling is a common symptom present in several medical conditions, but when a person has just suffered an injury, swelling is most likely due to a buckle fracture. As more blood begins to collect under the skin, the swollen area will start to bruise.

7. Bruising

Anytime there is a change in color on or around an injury, it is due to blood that has been released from the capillaries. Blood being released is a clean sign of tissue damage. Any type of tissue damage can result in bruising, however, it is a conventional sign of a buckle fracture. Cracked bones can also leak blood, which will cause bruising in the skin over the injury. The severity of the bruise often signals how bad the break may be.

Most bruises are visible to the naked eye, but they can go as deep as bone level. Any type of trauma that results in bruising should be checked by a medical professional to rule out a buckle fracture. Especially those in children and elderly people.

A buckle fracture will typically result in dark bruising over the injured side of the bone. It may be hard to pinpoint the exact location of the buckle fracture without an x-ray.

8. Deformity

There are several symptoms that indicate there may be a buckle fracture, but deformity is probably the most evident. When a bone bends outside of its predictable pattern, it will give rise to an obvious disturbance along the surface. Extreme breaks may cause the bone to break the surface of the skin. This is an obvious deformity that indicates a broken bone. A dislocated bone may cause a deformity, but a dislocation will not break the skin.

When a person suffers a buckle fracture, the ends of the broken bones may no longer align. In this case, the area around the wound will look misshapen. Buckle fractures affect only one side of the bone and will often result in a grossly misshapen area around the injury.

In addition to a visible deformity, there will be heavy bruising around the broken bone. In some severe buckle fractures, the area just above the fractured bone may look rippled.
