The body needs oxygen, but it also needs carbon dioxide to function correctly. The levels of both of these must be at a certain level, or the body starts to shut down, and a person experiences Alkalosis. When a person is breathing too deeply or too quickly, their carbon dioxide levels drop, and PH levels in the blood become unbalanced. The blood becomes too alkaline, and the organs start to shut down. This is a common condition that can be brought on by many different things.

Most people notice the first mild symptoms of the condition quickly and are able to recover, control their breathing, and allow their PH levels to balance on their own. If the Alkalosis is severe, the person may require medical attention to restore PH levels and help correct their breathing, so they aren’t at risk for Alkalosis again.

These are some of the most common symptoms of this condition.

1. Nausea

Alkalosis occurs in stages, and one of the earliest symptoms is nausea. When there is an upset in the way the body works, the stomach can be sensitive to the change. Nausea is common with this condition and can even lead to vomiting. Many people don’t realize why they feel nauseous, and this symptom alone is not enough to lead to an Alkalosis diagnosis. Many people do not even seek medical attention for this symptom because they assume it’s not caused by something serious.

Nausea is a symptom of many different health problems, and the only way to rule out something as serious as Alkalosis is to talk to a doctor. Doctors will perform a variety of tests, and if the problem is found soon enough, treatment can prevent nausea from getting worse and prevent other symptoms from occurring.

If this symptom occurs with other symptoms of Alkalosis, seek medical treatment immediately.

2. Numbness

When a person breathes out too much carbon dioxide, it’s not uncommon for them to feel numbness or tingling in their fingers, hands, toes, feet, or other parts of the body. This symptom usually comes on suddenly and can be severe. It may be accompanied by muscle spasms, or it may appear on its own. Because numbness is a common symptom of many other health problems, including just poor circulation, most people do not take it seriously.

They may try moving around to get the blood circulating to help make the numbness go away. When the numbness and tingling are caused by Alkalosis, moving around may not stop it and can even make it more severe.

The numbness only goes away once carbon dioxide levels return to normal. Medical attention may be necessary, or a person may be able to restore their level themselves by breathing into a paper bag and then breathing that air in again.

3. Tremors

Since the body functions with specific PH levels, when these levels aren’t correct, it can cause problems. Carbon dioxide helps keep PH levels accurate, and when there is a lack of carbon dioxide in the blood, the muscles can react. They may spasm or move sporadically. This is called a tremor. Some tremors are mild and barely noticeable.

Others are severe and can look similar to a seizure. The muscles can become very tight, and it can be painful to the person suffering from tremors. The tremors can last for seconds or several minutes, and they can come on at random times.

Most people experience several tremors in a row. Luckily, most people realize that something is wrong when they experience a tremor and seek medical attention. This can help prevent more symptoms and further complications. Anyone who has suffered from this condition before may also recognize this symptom and know to seek help.

4. Dizziness

Whenever a person’s oxygen and carbon dioxide levels are incorrect, a variety of symptoms can occur. One of the most common is the dizziness. It’s similar to when a person holds their breath for too long underwater or when they swim down to deep and struggle to get to the surface for air. If the blood becomes too alkaline, a person can feel lightheaded and even pass out.

There are a lot of different health problems and conditions that can cause dizziness and lightheadedness, and this symptom may not be enough on its own to allow a person to determine if they are suffering from Alkalosis or another condition. If the dizziness presents itself with other symptoms of the disease, it could be a medical emergency, and the sufferer should seek medical attention immediately.

Once the PH levels are correct, the dizziness should go away. A person may be able to restore their levels on their own with proper breathing techniques.

5. Difficulty Breathing

When a person is suffering from Alkalosis, they struggle to breathe properly. In many cases, they are hyperventilating or breathing faster than they are breathing out. This can be difficult to correct and can cause the PH levels in the body to become alkaline, which can make breathing even more difficult. The person may become short of breath or have trouble catching their breath at all. The person may start to panic, which is why this condition is sometimes referred to as a panic attack.

When a person can’t breathe, they also tend to become extremely tense, which can make breathing even more difficult. If you are suffering from this condition, it’s important to stay calm and relax so you can breathe properly.

If you are helping someone else get through an episode of Alkalosis, try to help them breathe at a reasonable pace so their PH levels will return to normal.

6. Confusion

Confusion can be an alarming symptom of Alkalosis for both the sufferer and anyone observing the condition. The confusion can come on suddenly but usually begins when the person has been struggling to breathe correctly for several minutes. When the brain doesn’t get the right amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide, it fails to function properly. The body is used to functioning within a PH level zone, and when the levels fall out of that zone, things start to go wrong.

A person may not know where they are, understand what is happening to them, or be able to communicate properly. They may not know simple things like the date, their birthday, or phone number.

They may begin to panic when they realize they are suffering from confusion, which can make it even harder for them to breathe properly. The confusion should go away once breathing, and PH levels return to normal.

7. Stupor

Stupor is another scary symptom to experience and observe. When a person suffers from a stupor, they fail to communicate and may be unresponsive altogether. They will not respond to certain stimuli or may barely respond at all. A person who us experiencing stupor may seem as if they can’t hear or speak. Talking to them will get no reaction. If they are poked, touched, or rubbed on the chest though, they may offer a slight response. They may appear very tired and lethargic and not move much at all.

Sometimes, they may appear to be unconscious. This is a severe reaction to the Alkalosis and requires immediate medical attention. When a person suffers from this symptom, they have likely been struggling to regulate their breathing for a while, and the PH levels are not able to level out without medical intervention. A person may become unconscious after suffering from stupor for a short amount of time.

""

8. Coma

While most people think of Alkalosis as a temporary condition that they can overcome with proper breathing techniques, it can also be very dangerous. Not everyone can restore their PH levels by breathing properly or control their breathing on their own. Many people need medical attention to help them overcome this condition.

Putting off medical care too long can result in severe symptoms such as a coma. When a person goes into a coma, they are no longer aware of anything around them. They may breathe on their own, but they cannot move or control their bodies. They are unresponsive and require immediate medical care.

If left untreated Alkalosis may be fatal, especially once a person goes into a coma due to the condition. It’s best to seek medical attention before a person goes into a coma, as this is considered a sign that the Alkalosis is severe and make the chances of recovery much lower.
