Telangiectasia is also known as spider veins. It’s a skin condition that appears as stringy, dark or red lines under the surface of the skin. It can also appear on the mucous membranes. The blood vessels in the body become inflamed and show through the skin. There are several things that can cause this condition, including autoimmune disorders. The appearance of spider veins can often help doctors make a proper diagnosis or be a reason for them to test for a specific disease.

Spider veins may cause pain, but they are often a cosmetic problem. It’s the underlying cause of the spider veins that require treatment. In some cases, when the underlying cause is successfully treated, the spider veins will go away, or the condition will improve.

In other cases, the spider veins are permanent and will remain on the surface of the skin for months after the underlying cause is treated or permanently.

1. Scleroderma

People who suffer from Scleroderma often develop telangiectasia in their face, hands, and even the mucous membranes. The condition is common with both type of Scleroderma, but it is more common in Limited Scleroderma. Over time, the telangiectasia becomes worse with both types.

Medical researchers believe that the spider veins occur when the body attempts to restore blood flow to the areas of the body that are suffering from poor circulation. The condition can also be a sign that there are other vascular problems or health problems present.

Spider veins can also mean an increased risk of pulmonary artery hypertension. Doctors may monitor scleroderma patients who develop spider veins for other health problems.

They may also look at the number of spider veins that are present on the body and use them to determine how long a person has been suffering from Scleroderma or the severity and progression of the condition.

2. Dermatomyositis

Dermatomyositis is a condition that causes inflammation in the skin and muscle tissue. It can cause redness, swelling, and other discoloration. It sometimes means there is an internal cancer present but may also occur as an autoimmune disorder. It often appears in areas of the body that are exposed to the sun. It may not occur at the same time the dermatomyositis is diagnosed but usually occurs after a person has been suffering from the condition for a long time.

They appear where there are areas of poor circulation. While the spider veins are unsightly and embarrassing to many people, they can actually help doctors diagnose certain disorders and their severity.

Doctors may continue to monitor a patient and pay close attention to when and where they form. Some people are not diagnosed with dermatomyositis until the spider veins occur and give doctors a reason to test for the condition.

3. Lupus

Telangiectasia can appear in almost any part of the body. The places it occurs can be a sign of the underlying cause of the condition and can help doctors make a proper diagnosis or point them in the right direction for medical testing. In people who are suffering from Lupus, the spider veins can appear in nail folds.

They may also occur on the lesion caused by Lupus. They may also be present around the toenails. This can be a sign of the disease, or it may occur when a person has been suffering from Lupus for a long time.

When it occurs on or near lesions and rashes caused by Lupus, it may be directly related to the disease. Telangiectasia can be a symptom of Lupus, or it may simply occur alongside it and be a symptom of another underlying cause. It rarely occurs before a lupus diagnosis is made unless caused by another condition.

4. Pregnancy

As a pregnant woman’s body grows, it struggles to provide blood flow to the placenta. This puts pressure on the blood vessels and can lead to telangiectasia. The hormonal changes in the body during pregnancy can also contribute to the condition. Other changes in a woman’s reproductive system such as menopause or birth control pills can also cause hormonal changes that can result in telangiectasia. Since the blood vessels begin to weaken as a person gets older, women who are older when they become pregnant are more at risk for developing the condition.

The condition is also likely to be more severe in older, pregnant women or women who are beginning menopause. As the body continues to change and hormone levels go up and down, the condition may change as well. Sometimes the spider veins may appear to grow faster in more areas, and at other times, the growth or appearance may slow.

5. Rosacea

Telangiectasia is often confused with rosacea because it occurs alongside it. Rosacea is a skin irritation that doesn’t have a known cause. It appears as red patches on the face. It most commonly appears on the cheeks, forehead and over the bridge of the nose. It may or may not cause discomfort, but it is usually only a cosmetic disorder. Telangiectasia may appear in the exact same areas as the rosacea and may look similar.

The spider veins can also cause the rosacea to appear worse or even become painful. Doctors sometimes have a hard time determining if one of both conditions is present and many people who have already been diagnosed with rosacea don’t notice the appearance of spider veins if they occur in the same area.

It can become worse over time and often worsens as the rosacea worsens. It can cause permanent damage to the skin if left untreated.

6. Liver Disease

When the liver doesn’t function normally, the blood flow in the body is affected. It can cause extra pressure on the blood veins, which can result in telangiectasia. In many cases, the condition doesn’t’ appear until a person has been suffering from living disease for a while. In situations, the spider veins are considered symptoms and can help sufferers seek medical attention.

Some people are only diagnosed with liver disease after they see a doctor because of the appearance of spider veins. Other symptoms that can occur along with the physical characteristics of the condition include nose bleeds, dark blood in stools, and shortness of breath.

The symptoms may occur suddenly or may come on gradually and worsen over time. If the liver disease is treated, the symptoms may improve, and the spider veins may fade over time. Sometimes the damage from the telangiectasia is permanent and may cause lasting redness.

7. Chronic Systemic Corticosteroid

Sometimes it’s not a health problem or disease that causes the telangiectasia, but the treatment for a disease. Patients who are taking chronic systemic corticosteroids can often develop the condition. It’s more common in people who have been undergoing long term treatment, but it can also affect people who are just starting the treatment. People often take these medications for rosacea or other skin conditions.

The medications soak into the skin and cause irritation to the blood veins. This is often more common in areas where the skin is thin, such as around the eyes and on the face. Stopping the use of these steroids may prevent more spider veins from forming, but it may not be an option for all patients.

Doctors will help patients weigh the risks of continuing the use of the corticosteroids and look for ways to reduce the appearance of spider veins and improve the skin.

""

8. Skin Allergies

Skin allergies can cause telangiectasia. The type of allergy and the treatment determine the severity of the spider veins and how fast they occur and their severity. Irritation to the skin can lead to inflammation on the skin and the muscle tissue underneath, which can cause the spider veins to form. Some topical medications that are learned to treat skin allergies can also do more harm than good.

Over the counter, medications can soak into the skin and lead to problems. People who must take medication because of a severe skin allergy may be forced to deal with spider veins. Doctors may have other treatment options that are milder and may help to treat the allergies without causing or worsening spider veins.

Some people also confuse the appearance of spider veins with skin allergies and apply topical creams thinking they are treating the problem when really they are making it worse.
