If you are experiencing eye irritation and reddening of the whites in your eyes, it could be due to a condition known as entropion. This disorder typically affects people over the age of 40-years old. The eyelid folds inward, causing the eyelashes to scratch the cornea of the eye, resulting in sensations of pain, discomfort, and irritation.

People who are dealing with the effects of entropion find that the eyelid turns inward when they squeeze their eyelids shut or blink hard. In some cases, the eyelid may permanently end up in a folded position. As a result of this disorder, the patient may find that they develop sensitivity to light and wind, due to the eyelashes scratching the cornea.

If left untreated and unmanaged, entropion can cause permanent vision loss. If you’re experiencing symptoms of red eyes, crusting, or blurred vision, then you could be dealing with a case of entropion. Visit your doctor for a diagnosis and treatment before the condition results in permanent vision loss.

1. Muscle Weakness and Loose Skin

As we age, the body starts to lose its ability to synthesize proteins, resulting in muscle weakness and changes in the skin. Patients who are dealing with entropion experience muscle weakness in the lower eyelid. This weakness causes them to lose control of the lower eyelid. As a result, the eyelid may start to turn inward when they blink or when they shut their eyes tightly.

The skin on the lower eyelid may also become loose, exacerbating the effects of the disorder. Unfortunately, there is nothing the patient can do to prevent this muscle weakness or loose skin from occurring. As a result, the patient may need surgery to rectify the situation. Surgery helps to tighten the skin and lower lid and prevent it from turning inward when the patient blinks.

If left unmanaged and untreated, the symptoms of loose skin and muscle weakness continue to advance. In the severe stages of the disorder, the patient may find that the lower eyelid remains in a folded position permanently.

2. Scars or Surgery

People who experienced damage to the eyelid, or area around the eye, are more inclined to develop symptoms of entropion. Scarring that occurs around the eye, chemical burns or other forms of trauma may cause the onset of entropion. These types of Injuries cause distortion of the normal curvature of the eyelid, resulting in the emergence of the condition.

These types of injuries cause problems with the skin or the muscles that manage the movement of the eyelid. As a result, the patient starts to lose control of the eyelid, bringing about the onset of the disorder. In some cases, individuals that sustain these types of injuries in early childhood or adolescence, they find that they experience the development of entropion on later in life.

Even if the patient receives treatment for damage to the eye, they may experience no issues for years, only to find that entropion starts decades later. During diagnosis, doctors will ask patients about any history of trauma or damage to the eye to identify the cause of the disorder.

3. Eye Infection

Patients who are dealing with the onset of entropion may experience the condition due to infection. Pinkeye is a common bacterial or viral infection of the eye, typically occurring in children who spread it to adults in the household. The adults then go on and infect other people in the community. Some people are prone to developing pink eye frequently due to a weak immune system.

Trachoma is another form of bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Patients who are dealing with this condition find that they develop a roughening on the inside of the eyelids. As a result of the infection, the patient experiences eye pain, and a breakdown in the cornea lens. This infection is severe and may result in eventual blindness if the patient does not seek treatment.

Both of these diseases are responsible for the onset of entropion in the infected individual. Fortunately, both of these diseases are curable, and patience and seek immediate treatment to avoid the advancement of the condition into entropion.

4. Inflammation

Spastic entropion describes a form of the condition resulting from inflammation of the eyelid or dryness resulting in irritation. Patients who are experiencing this disorder may rub their eyelids frequently, and want to squeeze them shut, to relieve the symptoms.

However, this behavior will often lead to a spasm of the muscles in the eyelid. As a result of rubbing and squeezing the eyelids, patients may start to experience rolling of the inner edge towards the cornea.

The spasms may come and go every few days, or they may be permanent, causing the patient plenty of irritation. In some cases, the use of eye drops may help to lubricate the eyeball and prevent the onset of spasms. However, if the patient does not seek any form of treatment, the contractions continue, and entropion may set in permanently.

Those patients living in hot and dry areas with low humidity, who experience frequent spasms and irritation, should use eye drops daily to avoid the onset of entropion.

5. Developmental Complication

In some cases, entropion occurs due to congenital issues. Some children are born with additional folds in the skin of the lower eyelid, resulting in the formation of eyelashes that turn inward. As the child ages, entropion becomes more pronounced, and the child may start to experience symptoms of irritation and inflammation in the eyelid, as well as the eyeball.

Children who are born with congenital issues such as those described above, require surgery when they reach a specific age to restore the eyelid to normal levels of function. Those children that experience the onset of the condition at an early age may rub their eyes frequently and cry, in an attempt to gain attention from their parents. Parents should always watch their children for any signs or visual cues of eye irritation, as children cannot yet provide parents with verbal cues for their causes of pain.

Surgeons can rectify the disorder, provided that the child receives treatment in time. In most cases, the child will experience no lasting damage from the surgery or the effects of entropion.

6. Age

Congenital entropion is a rare disorder that affects very few children. Most cases of entropion affect individuals over the age of 40-years old. It’s at this stage in our lives that the body starts the lose the ability to synthesize protein efficiently. As a result, the patient may notice that they begin to develop symptoms of muscular fatigue in the eye, and loosening of the skin around the eyelids.

Patients who work on computers and stare at the screen for the significant part of the day, require the use of eye exercises to maintain muscular strength in the eyeball. Close your eyelids, and rotate your eyes counterclockwise and clockwise 10-times.

Look upwards towards the roof of your eyelid, and then down towards the bottom. Follow this stretch with looking towards the left and then the right. Repeat this exercise for two or three sets every day. Using these exercises helps to maintain the strength of the muscles that move the eyeball, helping to avoid the onset of entropion.

7. Previous Trauma or Burns

Both burns and trauma can also affect the onset of entropion in affected individuals. Trauma may lead to damage to muscles around the eyeball, resulting in the formation of scar tissue. The scar tissue may cause issues with normal eye movement, resulting in weakness of the muscles that move the eye, and the onset of entropion.

People that experience burns to the side of the face near the eye may also be at risk of developing entropion it later in life. Burns also create a significant amount of scar tissue underneath the surface of the skin, resulting in weakness to the muscles that control the eyeball.

If you experience trauma to your eyes, or skin around your eyes, speak to a doctor for treatment. There are topical oils that ensure the skin heals properly, and there’s no further damage to the musculature around the eyes. Remaining untreated could lead to the onset of entropion.

""

8. Nervous System Disorders

There is a network of nerves extending from the brain towards the eyeball. Some patients may develop nervous system disorders that result in a twitching of the eye. These patients are unable to control these twitching sensations, and they may find that it starts to cause issues with their lower eyelids. As a result, the patient may see that the eyelid turns inward and stars to scratch the lens of the cornea.

In most cases, the symptoms of twitching are only temporary and do not result in the onset of entropion. However, some people may find that the symptoms of twitching frequently occur throughout the day. These patients may have to seek treatment from their doctor for strategies to resolve the twitching before it ends up causing the onset of entropion.

These patients may also find it a wise strategy to limit their caffeine and sugar intake, to reduce stimulation of the nervous system, and prevent the twitching spasms from occurring.
