Your lumbar spine is your lower back. More specifically the vertebrae are known as L1-L5. Lordosis is the slight curve directly above the buttocks. Some lordosis is totally normal; however, a pronounced curve can cause issues that can impact your entire body. Hyperlordosis is a spine curvature disorder.

Lumbar lordosis can be congenital or genetic or caused by other things such as being overweight or pregnant. It can be the result of other conditions like muscular dystrophy or dwarfism. It can be treated to some extent with exercise, physical therapy, a back brace or surgery. There is no cure for adults. If a child is diagnosed with juvenile lumbar lordosis it will get better as the child grows.

The pain caused by lumbar lordosis can impact virtually every aspect of your life. From sleep disturbance to overall mobility it is a disorder that needs to be recognized and addressed.

Here are the eight most common symptoms of lumbar lordosis that you should know about.

1. Back Pain

Back pain affects everybody from time to time but with lumbar lordosis, pain can be constant and debilitating. The pain is caused by the misalignment of the spine and the resulting muscle spasms. Muscles spasm because they are too tight and being pulled in an unnatural direction. Lumbar lordosis can’t be cured but the pain can be treated so that you can live an enjoyable life.

The pain from lumbar lordosis can be a dull ache or a sharp stabbing sensation. If you suffer from back pain and you feel that your spine has a pronounced curve, it isn’t normal and you may be able to find relief. Seek help. Get an x-ray. A doctor will be able to determine the state of your spine, rule out any other more serious issues and recommend a treatment plan.

It is best to avoid the use of pain medication, especially opioids, which don’t address the underlying issue of misalignment. Masking the pain doesn’t solve the overall problem and could lead to addiction.

2. Incorrect posture

Poor posture is a symptom of lumbar lordosis because it is a visible indication that something is wrong. A healthy spine is straight. If a person can’t stand straight on a regular basis, it is because the muscles are exhausted from working too hard. They are overworked because of spinal irregularities.

The doctor will do a visual inspection and ask the person to stand sideways so that they can see their profile. A healthy spine has a slight “S” curve to it. If the curve is too pronounced or exaggerated you will be diagnosed with hyperlordosis. Kyphosis (a hump on your upper back) and scoliosis (curvature of the spine) can also be discovered through an examination of incorrect posture.

Over time, poor posture can cause actual anatomical changes to your back. You will want to have any abnormalities corrected as soon as possible so that they don’t create any bigger and more painful issues as you age.

3. Sleep disturbance

Sleep, or more specifically, lack of sleep impacts every moment of your day. Are you constantly tired and irritable? Exhaustion is more than just being sleepy. It is your body’s response to not being able to rest because of an underlying condition.

The underlying condition, in this case, is back pain. The vertebrae in your spine protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is where your nerves reside. Misalignment of the spine causes your nerves to be constantly irritated. A pinched nerve in the neck can cause your hand to feel numb. A pinched nerve in your lower back can cause intense pain down the back of your leg.

All these irritations can cause your body to get insufficient rest and lack of sleep can hurt you. How? Lack of sleep makes you grouchy. Your relationships can suffer both at home and at work. You simply aren’t as attentive to things as you should be. You are putting yourself in danger of an accident. If you address your spine issue your sleep issue will resolve itself.

4. Pronounced curvature

Another way to diagnosis lumbar lordosis is to attempt to lay flat on the floor. If there is a sizeable gap between your lower back and the floor, you have lumbar lordosis. As a matter of fact, if you attempt to push your lower back to make contact with the floor, your back will probably go into spasm because those muscles are already overly-stressed holding your back in an unnaturally curved position.

While x-rays and other diagnostic tests are helpful. Visual cues are sometimes the easiest, least expensive and most accurate way of determining the cause of physical issues. Exaggerated curvature is easily seen by the trained eye.

Remember that some curvature is totally normal and does not need to be treated. Only very pronounced curvature needs to be medically addressed. Look at your body in the mirror from the side. Do you suspect your back pain arises from this condition? If so, a medical consultation might be in order.

5. Congenital abnormalities

Lumbar lordosis is a deformity of the spine and although it could possibly the result of poor posture, most people with lordosis are born with it. It could be a problem passed down through the generations, it could be due to muscular dystrophy or caused by congenital hip dysplasia.

Congenital means present at birth. Of course, it may not be immediately obvious when a child is born and only becomes noticeable as the child grows and begins to be physically active. If a child appears to have a “swayback” it could be benign lordosis and the symptoms will disappear as the child matures.

Physical therapy and stretching exercises can be beneficial in treating the curvature in a child. This is especially true in cases where the child has been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Over time, the muscles become weaker and physical therapy is necessary to help keep the muscles strong and the spine aligned.

6. Impaired movement

As discussed previously, muscles in the lumbar region affected by lordosis can spasm. Sitting at a desk all day exacerbates this problem. If you get up and then can’t move easily, that stiffness is probably due to tight hip flexor muscles. Those muscles can pull the lumbar area out of alignment and make the lordosis even more pronounced.

Stiffness in your lower back is a common indicator of lumbar lordosis. If you can’t move, if bending either backward or forwards from the waist causes pain or if your ability to bend is severely limited, lumbar lordosis is probably the problem.

Muscle tightness, restricted movements, or just being unable to move quickly are all symptoms of lumbar lordosis. Constant low-grade pain in the lower back is best treated by stretches and regular exercise. It’s also beneficial to be aware of your posture to help alleviate any undue pressure on your lower back. If you work a desk job, invest in a good chair.

""

7. Sciatica

Sciatica isn’t technically back pain, but it is pain caused by the back. Or more specifically a pinched nerve in your lower back that causes intense pain down the backs of your legs. Numbness and “restless legs” are also caused by the sciatic nerve too.

Sciatica can be worsened by lumbar lordosis, so if you experience this type of pain, the lumbar region might be the source of your problem. The cause is most likely inflammation. There is something in your lower back that is causing the area around the nerve to swell. The swelling presses on the nerve and causes a burning sensation to travel down the back of one or both legs.

This type of pain can be very debilitating and might even make it difficult to walk. If your legs are numb due to lumbar lordosis, you can even risk falling. Sciatic pain can be alleviated by addressing the origin of the problem in the lumbar region and treating the inflammation.

""

8. Spinal stenosis

Spinal stenosis when space is your spine becomes narrow over time. The narrowing puts pressure on the nerves. This can lead to a lack of mobility, discomfort and even loss of bowel and bladder function. Prolonged undiagnosed and uncorrected posture issues can cause other back issues like spinal stenosis.

This illustrates the importance of thorough medical care beginning at an early age. If a problem is caught when a person is young, steps can be taken to combat the problem. If you are aware of a medical situation, you can take steps to adjust your lifestyle. Making conscious decisions that help your problem instead of hindering it. Take steps to address any physical problems instead of ignoring them and hoping that they will go away on their own.

Lumbar lordosis can’t be cured; however, the pain and its associated complications can be treated with medication, exercise and physical therapy, a back brace, weight loss or even surgery in severe instances.
