A femur fracture is when the bone breaks, crushes, or cracks. It has also been called a hip fracture. A femur fracture is difficult to occur. It usually caused by a high-impact force, including a vehicle accident, gunshot wound to the thigh area, or falling hard on a surface. When a femur fracture occurs, surgery may be needed.

If some cases, it can be treated without surgery. Some ways to treat a femur fracture is through physical therapy and RICE, which is rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Most people are unaware of when they have a femur fracture. They will experience pain but may believe it’s something else. When you have a femur fracture, there are symptoms to look out for just in case it happens to you.

Here are eight known symptoms of a femur fracture you need to be aware of. It can save your hip and life.

1. Pain in your thigh area is a known symptom of a femur fracture.

The pain will be excruciating. One way to help the pain is taking Tylenol and Motrin until you’re able to get to a doctor. The best medicine you can give to your hip by resting. Stop all activities that you were doing and rest the area.

In a week, try to walk to see if you experience any pain. If you do, let it rest longer. Don’t force to put pressure on your hip because it can make it worse. Icing the affected area will work as well. Ice the area several times a day, especially if the pain is intense. Ice the area for about 10 to 15 minutes. The area of pain will feel numb each time you ice it.

Let the area rest during this time as well. Don’t try to move it because the pain has gone away.

2. Swelling is a symptom you will experience with a femur fracture.

Swelling is common because of the injury. When swelling occurs, place ice over the area several times a day. Taking over-the-counter Motrin and Tylenol will help with the swelling. A thick bandage compresses the swelling to help it to go down. Don’t tie the bandage too tight because it will cause more pain and swelling. In a few days, the swelling should go down.

When using a bandage change it often because germs can get underneath it. Wash the area often after placing the bandage over the affected area. When it’s swollen, you will feel some pain. Don’t touch it, unless you have to. The swelling may get bigger if you do so.

It may be difficult to put clothes over the hip because of the swelling and pain. It’s best to wear loose-fitting clothing until it heals.

3. Bruising is another known symptom of a femur fracture.

The size of the bruise depends on how hard the side of the hip was impacted. In order to get rid of the bruise is by icing the area several times a day for no more than 15 minutes. The more times you do it, the better.

The bruised area will be tender. If the bruise doesn’t go away in at least a week, go to your doctor, especially if the doctor told you it wasn’t a serious fracture. The bruise is unsightly, so you will want to wear a piece of clothing that will cover it. Don’t cover the bruised area at this time.

A bruise that is covered won’t go away. The bruise may even become worse. The bruise will eventually go away. It takes time and patience. As long as the area is iced on a regular basis, it will go away.

4. The inability to bear weight on the affected leg is another known symptom of a femur fracture.

It’s important to stay off of the side of the hip that is affected. The more you put weight on the hip area, the more pain you will experience. Even though, you can try walking in 24 to 48 hours, don’t force it. If it hurts, stop and rest.

Using crutches or a wheelchair is the best option for you until you’re able to bear weight on the affected side again. When you try to get up and down, get someone to assist you.

At physical therapy, the physical therapist will show you the correct way to put weight on the affected leg. Two bars side by side will be used to make it easier for you to walk. The more times you do this routine, your hip will become stronger. The first time you do the strengthening exercises, it will be painful.

5. The inability to move knee or hip on the affected side is a femur fracture symptom.

Your joints are stiff, so movement will be impossible. It is best to use a wheelchair since you’re unable to move your knee or hip. It is not a good idea to try to force your knee and hip to move because you can more damage. If you don’t need surgery, you may have to have it.

Wait until you see a physical therapist who will get you where you’re able to move your hip and knee again. It will take time, but the more sessions you have, the stronger the knee and hip will become.

Since your hip and knee are immobile you don’t want to go anywhere without your wheelchair. You can easily fall without it. You’ll cause damage to other parts of your body, including extra damage to your knee and hip area.

6. Visible portions of the fractured bone will be apparent with a femur fracture.

In order to correct it, you may need to have surgery. If it’s just out of place, a physical therapist may be able to put it back into place. It will be very painful. You’ll need to have strong pain medicine since the fractured bone is visible. Don’t touch the area or place a bandage over it. Only a medical professional can handle the problem. You definitely don’t want to try to bear weight on the hip area. It may even come out through the skin.

Bleeding will occur and you will go into shock. You could possibly die from this occurring. This is serious and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Even if you’re scared to go to the emergency room, someone close to you needs to take you. A femur fracture can become life-threatening if not treated.

7. Pain at the outside lower leg when you walk is a symptom to look out for when you have a fractured femur.

It will become worse when you walk on it. Most people will fight through the pain and continue to walk on it. The more you walk on the affected area, the pain will get worse.

It will get so bad that when you try to walk, you may fall and injure the same side that is already affected, along with the other side as well. The emergency medical staff will have to come and take you to the hospital for treatment.

If you have affected both sides of your leg, you will have to be in a wheelchair. It may be so bad that you have to be in a wheelchair for the rest of their lives. Listen to your body when you feel pain in your lower leg area.

8. Unexplained crying occurs when a child has a femur fracture.

The child will cry continuously because of the pain. They won’t be able to walk either. Parents need to take their child to the pediatrician to figure out what the problem is.

Children play rough and can fall down easily. When they fall, they can fall hard. They will get back up, but sooner or later, they’ll start to feel the pain. Some children are tough and try to walk on it so that they can get back to playing. If they try to put weight on it, they’ll experience more pain.

Parents and medical professionals need to explain to the child where he or she understands that it’s a serious injury and can’t put weight on it. It has to heal completely or it’ll get worse. Pain medication will relieve the child of the pain. It should be given as directed. Even if the child begins to cry before it’s time for more, wait until it’s time.
