Enterococcus Faecalis is a serious infection that affects the GI tract. It is commonly spread from person to person by direct or indirect contact, and if left untreated, it can spread to different parts of the body. The symptoms of the infection can come on gradually and are similar to most other types of infections. This bacteria is usually responsible for urinary tract infections and can cause a variety of symptoms.

Understanding the symptoms can help you determine if you have the infection and need to seek medical treatment. Antibiotics may help, but many strains of the bacteria are resistant to them.

Some people have bacteria living in their bodies and experience no symptoms or complications. Others can become severely ill and even have to be hospitalized until they recover. If the infection spread, it can lead to severe complications.

Some of the most common symptoms of the infection are as follows.

1. Fever

As with any infection, a fever is common with Enterococcus Faecalis. A fever is the body’s way of resetting and attempting to kill anything that’s living in the body and shouldn’t be. Fevers can come and go during the course of the infection an even be worse at certain times. Many people don’t take fever seriously enough and treat them with over the counter medications, without determining the cause of them.

While a minor fever that lasts for a short period of time may not be cause for concern, a high fever or a fever that lasts for a long time or comes and goes over a period of time is a sign of an infection. Infections require antibiotics, and if an Enterococcus Faecalis infection isn’t treated in time, it can spread to other parts of the body and cause severe complications.

A fever is usually one of the first symptoms people with this infection experience.

2. Chills

Chills are common with infections and usually occur with a fever. The body is more prone to feel cold when your body temperature is up. Many people experience chills even when the area around them is not cold. Chills can feel like uncontrollable shaking, and many people feel the need to cover up, even if they are sweating and feverish. Some people shake so badly that their muscles become sore. Wearing clothing or covering up with a blanket can raise body temperature and cause a fever to break.

Many people find that when they no longer have a fever, they no longer suffer from chills. Chills are almost always a sign of an infection or virus and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Since chills are common with all types of infections, they are not considered a symptom of Enterococcus Faecalis on their own.

When they are accompanied by other symptoms of the infection, doctors may be able to diagnose the infection more easily.

3. Headache

Headaches are often experienced by people who suffer from this type of infection. Although the infection begins in the digestive tract, it can spread to other parts of the body. A person may suffer a headache before the infection spreads, or the headache may be a sign that the infection has spread. Headaches are common with most types of infections and can be caused by many other things as well.

Without other symptoms present, most people don’t relate their headaches to an infection or illness. When the headache occurs alongside a fever, chills, and fatigue, it becomes obvious that there is an infection causing it. Over the counter medications can help relieve the pain of a headache, but they cannot treat the underlying cause.

The headaches may return as long as the infection is in the body and may get worse if the infection spreads to other parts of the body.

4. Abdominal Pain

An Enterococcus Faecalis infection begins in the GI tract. The bacteria spread from person to person and is often caused by poor hygiene. People who do not wash their hands have using the bathroom can spread the bacteria by touching hard surfaces or preparing food. If a person eats contaminated food or touches a contaminated surface and then touches their mouth, the bacteria can travel through the digestive tract. If a person is healthy, they may not suffer from symptoms of the infection.

Those who have stomach problems or a compromised immune system are more likely to suffer from abdominal pain. In some cases, the pain may be severe, and in others, it may be mild and barely noticeable. As the infection grows and spreads through the digestive tract, the abdominal pain may become more severe.

A warm bath, a heating pad, or pain medication can help relieve the pain until the underlying cause can be treated.

5. Pain When Urinating

It’s not uncommon for the bacteria to spread from the stomach and intestines to the urinary tract. This can lead to a urinary tract infection or mimic one. A person may feel a strong urge to urinate and then be unable to do so. Some people are only able to urinate a small amount at a time and continue to go back to the bathroom frequently to attempt to urinate more.

The person may feel a burning sensation or even abdominal pain while using the bathroom. Many people assume the cause is a urinary tract infection and seek medical attention for antibiotics. While the antibiotics can help clear up the infection in the urinary tract, most antibiotics don’t clear up Enterococcus Faecalis infection completely.

The bacteria tolerance to common antibiotics makes it hard to treat. Many strains are completely drug-resistant, which makes them dangerous to people who are susceptible to infections and health problems.

6. Stiff Neck

In severe cases, the bacteria can spread to the brain and cause meningitis. When this happens, the symptoms can become severe and may appear suddenly. This can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. It can be hard to treat since some strains are resistant to antibiotics.

A stiff neck is a common symptom of meningitis and one of the most obvious. The neck may be hard to move in certain positions; a person may not be able to turn their head one way or another, and cannot tuck their neck to their chest.

A stiff neck can be caused by many other things, including an improper sleeping position, so when it is the only symptom, it may not be a sign of an infection. Other infections can also cause a stiff neck, so it’s a good idea to get a proper diagnosis from a doctor so you can also get the best treatment.

7. Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums are more common with infections than most people realize. Many people relate bleeding gums to improper brushing or gum disease, but when there is an infection growing in the body, the gums may bleed at random. The gums may appear to be red and sore. It may be hard to eat and chew certain foods. Many people with this infection will taste blood and not be sure where it is coming from.

When brushing, the gums may bleed profusely. They may also be sore to touch, and it may be hard to sleep because the pain of lying on your face becomes severe. Rinsing the mouth with an antiseptic mouth wash, saltwater, or even vinegar can help numb the pain and help rinse away any bacteria that may be living in the gums and mouth. Once the infection has been treated, the gums should stop bleeding, and the pain should go away.

8. Fatigue

When there is an infection in the body, the body starts working hard to remove it. This can make a person extremely tired. Many people feel fatigued before they experience any other symptoms of an illness. The fatigue may come on a few days before other symptoms like a fever, or chills, but it can also last longer than the other symptoms. There is no real treatment for fatigue, but once antibiotics are started, and the body has some help fighting off the infection, the fatigue may improve.

Many people find that resting can help, but they still feel tired when they wake up and try to move around and go about their day. Drinking and eating properly can help, as it will boost the immune system and help fight off the infection faster and easier.

Many people don’t consider fatigue a symptom of infection until the other symptoms appear with it. Extreme fatigue is also common but could be a sign that the infection has spread.
