A femur fracture is a break, crush, or crack in the thigh area. It can also be called a hip fracture. Some people get a broken hip. A broken hip occurs when the upper part of the bone breaks in the hip joint area. If a femur fracture isn’t serious surgery doesn’t have to be done. In fact, home remedies can help relieve the symptoms of a femur fracture.

On the other hand, a femur fracture can be serious and requires surgery. If surgery isn’t done it can be life-threatening. When you have a femur fracture, you need to stay off of the leg until it heals. It will take some time for it to heal. It is painful if you try to walk on it. In some cases, it can cause you to fall and more damage will be done to the femur.

There are eight known causes of a femur fracture.

1. Motor vehicle or motorcycle accident is one of the known causes of a femur fracture.

When the accident is caused by the person driving at a high speed and then crashes, this will cause a femur fracture. The thigh area will break or crush, especially in a motorcycle accident. In a motorcycle accident, the motorcycle usually falls on the person’s thigh area. Immediate surgery may be needed in this case. After surgery and the person goes home, he or she needs to rest.

The person shouldn’t go back on the motorcycle until their doctor says it’s okay. On a motorcycle, you have to bend your knees and it’ll be difficult to do that. In a motor vehicle accident, the car can flip over as well. The leg will turn over in the opposite direction. It’ll be difficult to get the person out of the car. It’ll make the femur fracture hurt more.

2. Sports can cause a femur fracture.

A lot of sports involve contacts, such as hockey, basketball, and football. When the person lands, someone else could land on their leg and cause the femur to break. This will cause the person to not be able to play his or her chosen sport for a while. If the femur fracture is serious, the person may not be able to play their sport anymore.

It is difficult to not get impacted hard with these sports because that’s just how these sports work. A person can’t tell another person what sport to choose. If a person loves football, he has the right to play it. Cheerleading isn’t a high impact sport, but if the cheerleader falls when flipping or is dropped while someone is holding her, she can injure her femur as well.

If the femur fracture isn’t serious, the player will be able to go back playing in a few months.

3. Bone diseases such as osteoporosis are a known cause of getting a femur fracture.

Osteoporosis is when the bones become weak. Anything can cause the person to break their femur. The person doesn’t have to fall hard either. Since the bones are weak, it can cause the person to be unable to move their joints. If they try to move, it will cause pain. Most of the time when a person has osteoporosis and he or she gets injured, a wheelchair may be needed.

The person may not be able to walk again. It’s important for people with osteoporosis to be careful when walking anywhere. They could fall even in their homes. Muscle ointments may help temporarily, but it won’t cure the femur fracture.

Some people have to have a hip replacement. It may help him or her to walk again, but the person may still need to use a cane or walker.

4. Overuse is another known cause of a femur fracture.

Runners are at risk of injuring their femur because they run long distances and over time cause stress on the bones. This is called a stress fracture. The bones become cracked because there is too much weight bearing on the bones. Runners tend to believe that the only way to lose weight quickly is by running. This may be true, but too much running isn’t good. Jogging and walking is the best alternative.

A person can lose weight by walking or jogging. Jog one day and walk the next. When jogging, try not to jog long distances because it can have the same effect as running. Ballet dancers can get a femur fracture as well. They have to extend their legs often when they dance. They may fall when they dance as well. They also have to have their feet in different positions.

5. Child abuse can cause a femur fracture.

Children that are abused have their bones broken by being beaten and pushed down. Parents may drag their children into a room if the child doesn’t do what they say. When a femur fracture occurs, parents that abuse their children don’t take their child to the hospital for treatment. The only way the child will get treatment is if the school official reports the problem to social services.

Small children who are not ready to walk can suffer from a femur fracture as well. Their bones are weak and a fall or pull will break them easily. It may take the child longer to learn how to walk since trauma to their bones has occurred. Pain and swelling will occur.

A small child can’t handle pain the same way an adult can. Immediate treatment needs to be given to the child because it can have a lasting effect.

6. Stretching can cause a femur fracture.

Stretching is supposed to help a person, but if you stretch the wrong way it can cause an injury. Some people overstretch so that they achieve flexibility quicker. For instance, when ballerinas stretch, they can overextend their leg and end up breaking a bone. They will notice that whenever they move their legs, the pain will occur. There will be swelling in the area as well.

On the other hand, when they try to move their leg, they may not be able to move it. A physical therapist will examine the leg area to see what is wrong. The physical therapist will diagnose the condition as a femur fracture. Some ballerinas try to stretch even harder when the pain occurs.

They will continue to stretch even though the pain is still there. They will only stop when they are unable to bear weight on the side of the leg that’s injured.

""

7. Fighting can cause a femur fracture.

When people get in rough fights, they tend to fall down and hit each other in all parts of their bodies. In some fights, the person may grab the other person’s leg and jump on it. This will break or crack the bone in the femur. The person will be in pain and unable to get up.

Someone will have to help the person up and bearing weight on the leg will be impossible. The only way to heal the femur is by going to the emergency room so that imaging and lab tests can be given. Surgery will most likely need to be done in order to fix the femur fracture.

Once the surgery is done and released from the hospital, rest is needed. The person doesn’t need to go out to fight again. Even if the fight occurs again, it may cause permanent damage the next time.

""

8. Cancer can cause fracture femur.

Cancer usually spreads to the bones, especially if the cancer is spreading rapidly. The bones will become weak and whenever they try to walk, they will fall. The femur will break because they will fall hard. It is even worse if they fall on the cement. They may never be able to recover even with surgery. Sometimes surgery can make the condition worse.

The cancer patient will have to use a wheelchair for the rest of their lives. Even a hip replacement may not do too much good for a person with cancer. Their illness has taken over their bodies, so there is not much anyone can do. The best the doctors can do is give the person pain medication to relieve the pain. It may even be uncomfortable when they sleep at night. They will need to put several pillows underneath the femur area to make them feel comfortable.
