Klebsiella pneumoniae is a bacteria that lives in the feces and intestines. When the bacteria are in the intestines, it’s not harmful to the body. On the other hand, if it spreads to another part of the body it can become a serious infection. The risk becomes higher when you’re ill. There are many parts of the body that Klebsiella pneumoniae can affect, including the liver, brain, eyes, and lungs. When it comes to the location of the infection, it depends on what symptoms you are experiencing.

Healthy people don’t get the infection. It’s individuals who have a weak immune system because of the long-time use of antibiotics or a medical condition. Antibiotics can cure the infection if the lungs are not weak. Some people’s bodies can’t take regular antibiotics. People with weak immune systems may need a stronger antibiotic to clear the infection.

There are eight frequent symptoms of Klebsiella pneumoniae.

1. Fever is one of the frequent symptoms of Klebsiella pneumoniae.

The fever can come on all of a sudden. It occurs when pneumonia occurs. In order to get the fever down, over-the-counter pain relievers will need to be taken, such as Tylenol and Motrin. They shouldn’t be taken long-term. If the fever becomes worse, take the person to the doctor. If it’s not severe, the doctor will prescribe medication to get rid of the fever. On the other hand, hospitalization is needed because fever can get worse. It can make the person feel sicker.

A fever that’s too high needs to be treated at the hospital. The person will have to stay in the hospital until the fever goes completely down. While in the hospital, IV fluids will be given, so that the person doesn’t become dehydrated.

A lot of the time when a person has a fever, he or she doesn’t have the strength to eat or drink anything.

2. Frequent urge to urinate is another frequent symptom.

The person will need to use the restroom several times during the day and night. They won’t be able to get any sleep. When they try to go to sleep, they will just wake back up to use the restroom. There may be an infection present, such as a urinary tract infection. You will have to urinate a lot when one is present. The color of your urine may be a different color as well. At the doctor’s office, he or she will require you to take a urine test.

The doctor will be able to tell if you have a urinary tract infection or not. The doctor will prescribe medication that will help clear up the urinary tract infection. You should stop urinating so much as well. Since you have klebsiella pneumoniae, you’ll need antibiotics to treat the infection as well.

3. Swelling is a symptom of Klebsiella pneumoniae.

The swelling will be on the skin. When there is a wound present because of an injury, the skin will swell. The person can use a bandage or ice to make the swelling go down. Since there are bacteria in the body, the swelling will not go away without using antibiotics. You may not want to place ice on your body since you have klebsiella pneumoniae because it could make your illness worse.

The doctor will suggest other methods to get rid of the swelling, along with taking antibiotics. If the swelling becomes severe, hospitalization is needed. You may need a stronger antibiotic to make the swelling go away. Swelling in the lungs could cause your ability to breathe difficultly. A lot of times when there is swelling, there is fluid built up in the body. The fluid needs to be taken out at the hospital.

4. Vomiting is a frequent symptom of Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Vomiting can occur anywhere. The infection has taken over the body and vomiting will occur. The person may force themselves to eat, but it will be difficult. The sight of food will cause the person to vomit. The vomiting won’t stop until the person goes to the doctor. The doctor will prescribe a number of medications to clear the infection. At this time, the person won’t be able to eat or drink anything.

Once the medicine starts working, vomiting will stop and the person can begin eating. Start off with broth or chicken noodle soup. The person doesn’t need to eat anything heavy. Even if the vomiting stops, continue giving the person the medicine.

The bacteria may still be inside of the body. If the medicine is stopped too early, it can cause the symptom to return and it may be worse the second time.

5. Eye pain can occur with Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Everything on the body can start hurting. It will go away once the infection clears. Whenever you open your eyes, it’ll be painful. Even touching the eye area will cause pain. It is a good idea to keep the eyes closed until the pain goes away. The only way you can do that is by resting. You may not want to rest on the eyes. You can still lie on your side without laying on the eyes. Eye drops shouldn’t be placed in the eyes. It will irritate the eyes even more.

You can try using a warm compress to soothe the eye area. You want to be careful to not get anything in the eye. Keep your eyes closed during the process. Always use a clean cloth. You don’t want bacteria getting into the eyes. It will make the symptom worse.

When you take antibiotics for a long period of time, it can have an adverse effect on the body. It can cause a person to have diarrhea. When diarrhea occurs, the stomach will begin to hurt. This is a sign it’s time to make a bowel movement. When you have diarrhea with Klebsiella pneumoniae, the bowel movement may have a different color. It is a good idea to check the color of your bowel movement so that you can tell your doctor.

A lot of the times diarrhea can be a sign of having severe Klebsiella pneumoniae. Sometimes in stools, there can be a nut like substance. This should be a cause of concern. Since you’re ill, you may not be able to look at your stools. It may be embarrassing, but have someone else take a look. The infection could be affecting the liver.

7. Shaking is another symptom that occurs with Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Shaking will occur suddenly because the infection can enter the bloodstream. Shaking may resemble having chills, but it’s because the infection got into your blood. It is a good idea to go to the emergency room to seek treatment for the shaking. Your primary care doctor may not know how to handle the shaking symptom. At the hospital, you will be given a series of medical tests to figure out why you are shaking. It will be diagnosed that you have klebsiella pneumonia. You’ll need to stay in the hospital for observation.

Once the shaking stops, you will be released, even though, you still have the infection. A prescription for antibiotics will be given. Take the antibiotics as directed. Don’t stop taking them until the medication is gone. The infection could return and affect your lungs this time. You’ll have to go back into the hospital if it does.

Since the eyes are red, they will become watery. Don’t rub them, especially if your hands are dirty. You already have bacteria in your body. You don’t want to make it worse.

Resting the eyes is the best medicine. Your doctor may prescribe eye drops, but not a drugstore brand. Have someone put the eye drops in your eyes. You may become dizzy if you lay your head back.

The eyedrops will not get in your eyes as well. The redness will go away as long as you take the antibiotics with it. While you’re taking the antibiotics and eyedrops, the eyes may become itchy. Don’t be tempted to rub them.
