Hypomagnesemia is when there are less than 1.8 milligrams of magnesium in the blood. A deficiency in magnesium does not always show symptoms. If symptoms are present, a person’s muscles will twitch and have a tingling feeling. It is important to get treatment for hypomagnesemia because it can lower potassium and calcium levels in the body. It can cause other health problems as well. Magnesium isn’t produced in the body, so the only way to get it is through your diet. About 50 to 60% of magnesium is stored in the bones, where only 1% is in the blood.

A person may never know that they have a magnesium deficiency because doctors don’t usually check for it. About 48% of Americans don’t get enough magnesium. A healthy person doesn’t have to worry about getting hypomagnesemia. Magnesium helps regulate blood pressure and keeps the nerves and muscles healthy.

There are eight frequent symptoms of hypomagnesemia.

1. Vomiting is a frequent symptom of hypomagnesemia.

The body isn’t getting enough magnesium, so the person will feel sick. Every time a person eats, they will vomit. The body is weak and it needs vital nutrients to operate and magnesium is one of them. Multivitamins can be taken to help a person to get their daily dose of magnesium, but it can still make a person feel sick. The body is already weak, so if you do take a multivitamin, eat healthy foods. When your appetite comes back, don’t eat a big meal. Eat enough where it doesn’t make you vomit.

When you vomit a lot, you will feel nauseous. You’ll want to lie down because your blood pressure will become low. Magnesium helps regulate your blood pressure. If you continue to vomit, you’ll need to go to the emergency room, where the doctors will diagnose you with having hypomagnesemia.

2. Nausea is another symptom of hypomagnesemia.

Nausea is usually accompanied by vomiting. The sight of food will make you sick. A person’s blood pressure will become low. In order to feel better, try to eat some magnesium-rich foods, including seeds, dark chocolate, and beans.

Dark chocolate may be the best food to start with because you can let it melt in your mouth. Eat the suggested amount located on the package. This should help to make your magnesium levels rise. The more you eat magnesium-rich foods, the better the person will feel.

If the suggested foods don’t work, go to your primary care doctor because there could be something else wrong, especially if you have waited too long to seek treatment. Chronic health problems could have occurred that can’t be controlled without medication. You may have to take additional medicine along with medicine for magnesium to keep you from being nauseated.

3. Twitching in the facial muscles occurs with hypomagnesemia.

Magnesium makes the muscles healthy. Low levels of magnesium will make you twitch. A lot of the times when people face twitch, they may not pay too much attention to it. Most people say it’s their nerves. That is correct. Magnesium is needed to make the nerves healthy as well. Once you start getting magnesium-rich foods in the body, the twitching will go away. The twitching may come and go.

Sometimes the twitching can occur in the eye area. Taking a multivitamin will help. Make sure that the multivitamin has 100% magnesium. It may take a while for the multivitamin to absorb in the body, but the more you take them, the body will feel better.

Magnesium-rich foods or multivitamins will work better if you are eating a healthy diet on a regular basis. Sometimes the wrong foods can cause an adverse effect on the body.

4. Personality changes are a frequent symptom of hypomagnesemia.

Your mind isn’t working the same because you have a deficiency in magnesium. You may become angry a lot because you feel sick. Whenever someone says something to you, you’ll lash out at them. When you go to work, you may make the mistake and lash out at your boss. During this time, you should be by yourself until your personality goes back to what it was. You wouldn’t normally do that, but hypomagnesemia is causing it.

Your personality will only improve if you start eating a magnesium-rich diet. It won’t happen overnight, but you will go back to feeling like yourself. A lot of the times when a person gets to rest, he or she feels much better. After eating a magnesium-rich meal, lie down for a while. When you wake up, you will feel like a new person.

5. Constipation occurs with hypomagnesemia.

The body doesn’t get the nutrients that it needs and is causing the constipation. Once the body is able to get magnesium, the person will start making regular bowel movements. Magnesium helps to make potassium and calcium levels at a normal level. Without it, the calcium and potassium levels remain low.

When a person is suffering from constipation it’s not good to take stool softeners or laxatives. When you take them, you’ll feel nauseated because the body isn’t getting enough magnesium. You may start to vomit since the bowel movement is unable to go through the rectum and anus. It has to come out somewhere. The laxative may work, but your blood pressure levels will become low.

In order to make a bowel movement drink plenty of water and eat foods rich in magnesium, including beans, seeds, or fish. In a few hours, your bowels will start moving.

6. Tremor is a frequent symptom of hypomagnesemia.

Tremors can occur anywhere, including the face and hands. Since you have a magnesium deficiency, the tremor may occur more in the face. As stated before, magnesium keeps the muscles and nerves healthy. Without enough magnesium in the body, tremors will occur.

Since you have tremors, whenever you pick up anything, your hands will tremble. It could cause you to drop things. If the tremors become out of hand, you need to go to your primary care doctor. Your primary care doctor will take blood tests.

Make sure to tell your doctor to check your magnesium levels when blood tests are taken. The tests will show that your magnesium is low and the doctor may prescribe medicine to increase your magnesium. It will take time for the medicine to work, but over time, you should start to notice that the tremors have stopped.

7. Weakness can occur with hypomagnesemia.

The body feels weak because magnesium keeps potassium and calcium levels to the level it needs to be. Since you’re weak, you won’t be able to do much of anything. Every time you try to do something, you’ll get tired quickly. Even putting your clothes on will wear you out.

It’ll take you much longer to do things when it used to only take you a few minutes. For instance, it might have taken you a few seconds to take a pot out of the cupboard, but now it takes almost 10 minutes. You have to reach and muscles and bones are weak.

When you have weak bones and muscles, you have to be careful in and out of the home. Any type of fall will cause you to injure yourself easily. By eating more foods with magnesium in them, you won’t feel weak. You’ll have more energy.

""

8. Pronounced reflexes are a symptom of hypomagnesemia.

The body will start to jerk at any time. For instance, your hand may just start shaking or jerk for no apparent reason. When it happens the first time, you may not pay too much attention to it. The more the symptom occurs, you will need to seek medical treatment. At your doctor’s office, he or she may not check your magnesium levels. It may be best to go to the emergency room because the doctors will do a range of medical tests to find out what is exactly wrong with you.

The muscles are weak and the pronounced reflexes will only stop once your magnesium levels get to where they need to be. You may have to stay in the hospital overnight if the doctors feel they need to observe you. They will get your magnesium levels are the level they need to be before releasing you.
