A healthy heart has a regular rhythm that consists of a synchronized pattern that is consistent. The lower and upper chambers of your heart work together to make this pattern which consists of a beat, then a pause, then another beat. People who suffer from bigeminy are missing the correct pause following each beat. Specifically, the beat following the pause comes much earlier than it should which can result in an inconsistent pattern of long and short beats.

When the early beats originate from the upper chambers of the heart, they are called premature atrial contractions. If the early beats originate from the lower chambers of the heart, they are called premature ventricular contractions.

The upper portion of your heart is dedicated to the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen in your lungs while the lower portion is dedicated to circulating the freshly oxygenated blood all over your body.

1. Skipped Heartbeat

Not many people actively pay attention to their heartbeat. After all, it is a sensation that has been with you before birth and followed you through your whole life. Bigeminy affects the way your heart beats and disrupts its usual pattern, but the change is often so subtle that it is hard to notice premature contractions are happening. If you are one of the few who is actively aware of their heartbeat, you may notice when it skips. It may seem as if it has skipped a full beat when in actuality the pause is simply shorter or longer than it should have been.

A skipped heartbeat is easier to detect when one is at a period of rest, or when a person has participated in an activity that increased the heartbeat tremendously. One of the key symptoms of bigeminy is a skipped heartbeat, though a skipped heartbeat does not always mean a person is suffering from bigeminy.

2. Heart Palpitations

One common symptom of bigeminy is the feeling that your heart is beating too fast. The same symptom makes you feel as is your heart is beating very hard or even that is fluttering and skipping beats. This effect is referred to as heart palpitations. Those suffering from heart palpitations caused by bigeminy can feel their pulse in their neck, chest, and throat. Heart palpitations can exist when a person is resting and when they are performing any type of physical activity.

If you are suffering from bigeminy and think that you are having heart palpitations it can be very scary. Even though they may seem dangerous or like your heart is malfunctioning, heart palpitations tend to resolve on their own.

Most instances of heart palpitations in a person suffering from bigeminy are caused by stress. They can also be triggered in bigeminy patients who consume high amounts of alcohol, nicotine, or caffeine.

3. Fainting

In order for you to have a healthy body, you need to have a healthy heart. Most people who are suffering from bigeminy may not see serious side effects, though some may face more severe symptoms than others. Bigeminy reduces the length of the pause between each beat of the heart. This can be concerning because your heartbeat is what brings fresh oxygen into your body while also filtering out dangerous toxins like carbon dioxide.

Your upper heart portions are responsible for bringing in the fresh air and sending it to your lungs where it is exchanged with carbon dioxide. The lower heart portions are tasked with taking your newly oxygenated blood and passing it along to the rest of your body.

When these processes are hampered or seriously shortened, it can cause you to feel faint. Those who are suffering from severe cases of bigeminy may even faint as a result of oxygen deprivation.

4. Ectopic Contractions

One of the main characteristics and symptoms of bigeminy is the changes in the way the heartbeats. These ectopic contractions can originate from the top part of the heart or the bottom part of the heart. In most people who suffer from bigeminy, ectopic contractions will develop in both areas and alternate every so often during the course of a beat pattern. Ectopic contraction is extremely common in adults of all ages, even those who are not suffering from bigeminy.

In children, Ectopic contractions are not often seen unless it is a rare case where a congenital heart defect has occurred. Various factors cause ectopic contractions to develops such as stress, poor eating habits, pregnancy, or even excessive use of nicotine.

In themselves, ectopic contractions are not dangerous but they are a sign of other ailments or conditions of the heart such as bigeminy. Consultation with a medical professional is required for proper diagnoses.

5. Pause Between Beats

Many people who suffer from bigeminy are not even aware that they have the condition. The main characteristic is the shortened pause following each beat of the heart, and this is also the most common symptom. In many cases, the cause may not be evident without the use of an ECG machine. In more pronounced instances, a person may be able to feel the pause or the lack of adequate pause following their heartbeats. It is easier to detect in children while they are sleeping, or in adults during periods of rest.

Many times the shorted pauses will seem to be nothing more than a racing heart. Unless a person was at rest or otherwise idle, this bigeminy is often ignored. The pause between beats is most often shorter but every few beats it may also be longer. Sometimes, this symptom of bigeminy causes the ailment to be misdiagnosed.

6. Dizziness

Bigeminy affects the pause between the beats of your heart which can result in dizziness depending on severity. Most cases of bigeminy make a person feel as if their heart is racing or as if their heart is beating too hard. Sometimes, bigeminy can cause too many shortened paused in a row which will result in less oxygenated blood being circulated into your other organs. Your hear has two parts that are tasted with getting oxygen into your bloodstream.

The top part on its beat exchanges fresh blood from your lungs with tainted blood from your body. The bottom part during its beat is charged with pumping the fresh blood out to your extremities, brain, and other organs. When the pause between the beats is not completed properly, it can result in too little fresh blood reaching its intended destination. When this happens due to bigeminy, it can cause dizziness.

7. Feeling Faint

In order to survive, you need oxygen, not only by breathing it in but also by circulating fresh air to the rest of your body. Bigeminy directly affects how well your heart is able to process the air and blood in your body which can make you feel faint. Your body takes in the air when you breathe and when your heart pumps it cycles out the carbon dioxide in your blood while mixing in fresh oxygen. The pause between the beats of your heart allows blood to flow in and out in the top and bottom areas of your heart.

When bigeminy shortens these pauses, it limits the amount of poison that is filtered out and also reduces the amount of fresh air that is distributed to the outgoing cells. When the concentration of carbon dioxide gets too high, or when the amount of oxygen in the blood is too low, it can make a person suffering from bigeminy feel faint.

8. Chest Pain

Another symptom often seen in those who are suffering from bigeminy is chest pain. In most patients the chest pain that accompanies bigeminy is mild. The chest pain is often described as general discomfort as opposed to sharp biting pains. When the heart is unable to get enough oxygen or blood, it will pump harder in an effort to maintain the regular functions of the body. These increased force of contraction often result in mild discomfort or pain that feels like a general tightening of the chest.

The pauses caused by bigeminy are generally short and run on an unpredictable pattern of short and long pauses. For this reason, chest pain is usually brief as opposed to sustained pain. People who experience unexplained chest pain or discomfort during times of rest may need to check for bigeminy. Chest pain and discomfort may increase during periods of physical activity in those who have bigeminy.
