Synovial inflammation is also known as synovitis. This condition develops when the synovium portion of a joint in your body gets inflamed. In your joints, stratum synovial is an essential part of connective tissue that pads the capsule of your joints. The articular capsule of your joints look like a bubble, this bubble covers the joints in your body. The joint capsule covers joints on the wrist, elbow, shoulder, ankle, knee and all of your other joints.

There are two layers, one being the sturdy outer layer named the fibrous stratum, the other being the soft inside named the synovium. There is a fluid that resides in between both layers that are called synovial fluid.

The sole task of this fluid is to ensure that the joint stays lubricated and moist. Synovial fluid is highly viscous which helps to cut down on the amount of friction experienced by the articular cartilage when the joint is being moved

1. Gout

There are several types of arthritis, gout being the most common. Gout results in intense stiffness, swelling and pain in the joints most often the joint of the big toe. One of the main causes of synovitis, which is the inflammation of the joint, is gout. Attacks of gout are usually chronic and strike quickly without warning. Each attack harms the tissues of the joint by causing a severe case of synovitis. Almost all gout attacks are extremely painful.

There are several causes of gout including obesity, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Gout and the resulting synovitis are most often found in men, however, women are equally prone to developing it after menopause.

This form of arthritis is typically caused by having too much uric acid in the blood. Though synovitis from gout usually strikes the big toe, any joint in the body can be affected. Gout can be treated with medication and therapy.

2. Overuse of the Joints

One of the main causes of synovitis is simply the overuse of the joints. Repetitive actions are the cause of many joint-related ailments such as carpet tunnel, synovitis, and stress fractures. Just like pencils that are worn down with use, so will the cartilage in between your bones wear down when overused. Your body will make repairs to daily damage, but certain constant actions may stop your body from healing or damage your cartilage permanently.

It is vastly important that you give your joints enough time to properly rest and repair themselves each day. If you work in any form of professions that involve repetitive motions, such as a ditch digger, office worker, athlete or similar, adequate breaks are one of the only ways to ensure that your joints get time to recover. Synovitis is common in people who perform the same basic repeated actions day in and day out.

3. Inflammatory Arthritis

Although anyone can develop synovitis, it so is most commonly seen in people who have some form of arthritis. Inflammatory arthritis causes excessive growth of the synovium. This is an immune response that is not normal and can exacerbate the condition. When your body sees its own natural tissues or cartilage as a dangerous substance, it will attack those tissues. The body views extra growth of the synovium as a foreign substance in the body which makes your immune system do everything possible to dissolve the cartilage.

This immune response can trigger synovitis which will eventually lead to the loss of extra cartilage and your natural cartilage. When the joints no longer have adequate cushioning due to cartilage loss and synovitis, the surfaces of the joint can be damaged. This is what causes pain and stiffness that is common in those suffering from inflammatory arthritis. Synovitis is an additional side effect or complication of inflammatory arthritis.

4. Repetitive Stress

Your joints are much more prone to developing synovitis due to the sheer amount of use they experience. The fingers, wrist, and ankles are just a few of the most common areas that are regularly afflicted with synovitis. People are on the move and using their joints from the moment they learn to crawl. Synovitis is common in the knee, wrist, and elbows for this reason alone.

If you work in a profession or have a hobby that uses repetitive motions, such as soccer, data entry, or working in a warehouse, the chances of developing synovitis increases exponentially. There are many other forms of repetitive stress that can lead to the development of synovitis, however, proper rest and supportive aids can help limit the damage.

Many patients who suffer from certain forms of arthritis are more prone to synovitis and should avoid habits, professions or hobbies that can trigger synovitis.

5. Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a progressive autoimmune disease that is disabling to those are suffering from it. Most people who have Rheumatoid arthritis also will have developed synovitis. This disease causes the joints and organs to swell, become inflamed and also painful. In most cases, the feet and hands are affected first, but eventually, all joints in the body will be affected.

There is no cure for Rheumatoid arthritis or synovitis, but the progression can be slowed with several therapies. The most common symptoms of Rheumatoid arthritis are stiffness in the joints, a feeling of being unwell, and fatigue. These symptoms are most noticeable after waking up and when getting up after sitting or lying down.

At least two percent of the entire world population suffers or will develop Rheumatoid arthritis and synovitis. The pain from chronic joint inflammation can be managed with topical creams and herbal supplements, and prescription pain killers.

6. Lupus

Synovitis is most often caused by other diseases, such as lupus. This autoimmune disease causes the body to attack itself and destroy its own normal healthy tissues. One of the common side effects of lupus is synovitis, skin damage, lung damage, kidney damage, and joint damage. Lupus is often hard to diagnose and referred to the disease of 1,000 faces. There are more than 16,000 new cases of lupus diagnosed in the US annually and an even higher number worldwide.

The disease can affect anyone but is mostly found in women aged 14 to 44. One of the most notable cases in recent pop culture is the case of Selena Gomez who was diagnosed in her late teens.

While lupus is not contagious, there are rare cases in which lupus is passed from mother to fetus. The most common form of lupus is SLE and it attacks the entire body.

7. Rheumatic Fever

Group A streptococcal infections can often cause the body to develop rheumatic fever. This fever is a specific inflammatory reaction in the body that can also trigger synovitis. Most cases of rheumatic fever such as scarlet fever and strep throat will cause synovitis to develop when the fevers are left untreated. Not all cases of streptococcal infection result in the onset of rheumatic fever.

However, if the rheumatic fever has developed the symptoms of the condition such as synovitis will become apparent two weeks to a month after the infection. These fevers are most common in children between the ages of five and 15, however, all ages are susceptible. Though RF can be treated, it can result in long term side effects such as synovitis or rheumatic heart disease.

Rheumatic arthritis, which is a disease of the immune system can also trigger rheumatic fever. One of the most common signs of both forms is the development of synovitis.

8. Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis typically affects the lungs and is the second most deadly disease in the world. Over nine million cases of Tuberculosis occur annually with a third of those being left untreated. For women between the ages of 15 and 45, TB is among the top three causes of death. Some of the most notable symptoms of Tuberculosis are weight loss, fever, synovitis, and cough that may persist for several months.

TB is highly infectious and easy to pass to others who are in close proximity to the initial patient. Tuberculosis is also an airborne bacteria that allows it to travel through the air and even can stay on the outside of the body in an inactive state. Tuberculosis and synovitis are closely linked because the TB bacteria causes swelling and inflammation in the joints, which of course leads to the development of synovitis.

Many instances of TB are overlooked or misdiagnosed, so if a patient presents with synovitis, a TB test should be administered.
