""Unfortunate as Pink Eye is, it is very common. This may be due to its ease of distribution between carrying candidates. It’s as easy as rubbing your eye and shaking another’s hand, or using the same face cloth.

Many people will have Pink Eye at some point in their life. Therefore, it is very useful to know the symptoms in order to be able to spot it, steer clear of it, and avoid passing it on if you think you might have it. This will make recovery a smoother process, too! The symptoms differ slightly, based on the variety of pink (or red) eye a person has.

Symptoms of Pink Eye usually last five to ten days. They could go on as long as three weeks or more, depending on the severity. If symptoms last more than ten days, you will likely benefit from seeking medical counseling or treatment to ensure safe proceeding. If you have complications such as a weakened immune system or wear contact lenses, consult your doctor immediately. Many forms of Pink Eye are contagious, so make sure to determine which kind you have before returning to the general public, work, friends, or family.

1. When White Turns Red

The white part of the eye will appear red when an individual has contracted Pink Eye. This is the most universal symptom of all the types of Pink Eye. This makes sense, upon considering its name. This redness is a red flag, so to speak, when seeking to detect Pink Eye. It is also helpful when seeking to detect it in other people, so you can know to steer clear! At least, if you wish to avoid contracting it. This seems similar to the bright red that is often seen in nature when a snake or insect is warning of its toxic poisonous nature. Steer clear the red!

""2. Tons of Tears

The infected eye will produce more tears. While your friends may think your sad… in reality… they should not likely seek to comfort you with closeness, but should take for the hills, and help you from a distance as to not contract Pink Eye themselves!

This symptom is, again very common with all types of Pink (or red) eye. This is likely a reaction of the eye, trying to flush out whatever is agitating it.

Viral Pink Eye is especially noted as having this as a symptom. Again, this is good to know, considering Viral Pink Eye is the most treacherous of them all, due to its lack of medical treatment options and high contagiousness.

""3. Hello Yellow

You will be wanting to say goodbye to this yellow. It is a yellow discharge that dries as a crust that will cover part of the eye. This is another symptom frequently pairing with pink eye.

This yellow crust around the eyelash area of the infected eye or eyes is most common post-sleep. People may rise and shine unable to even open their eyes sometimes due to this discharge.

It can be a little scary the first time it happens. Water seems to do this trick of cleaning eyes back to their normal state, however… it is likely to happen every night for about a week with many types of Pink Eye, predominately Bacterial Pink Eye.

""4. Green & White

Green and white discharge is quite common with Pink Eye. Whitish discharge is a symptom of Viral and Bacterial Pink Eye, especially. I would definitely be scared or concerned if I was having green goo flow from my red colored eyes. Christmas isn’t that close! Too many colors for me, indeed.

If you are experiencing these symptoms for more than seven days, consult a medical professional.

It is not often good news when your face is changing colors.

""5. Itchy!

Itchiness is a major symptom of pink eye. A person may find themselves rubbing their eyes a lot. Unfortunately this is one of the fastest ways to spread pink eye. A person has an itching sensation in their eye, rubs their eye, and then shakes another person’s hand or uses a towel that another person then comes behind them and uses.

Sounds innocent enough, but as contagious as this virus is… that unsuspecting new harborer of the virus may pass it on to five other people before they realize they even have it! First line of defense, in general, here is washing your hands a lot.

""6. Feel the Burn

But not in the way we often like to hear that phrase. A burning sensation is a commonly experienced with pink eye. Viral Pink Eye is predominately mentioned as having this as a symptom.

There are eye drops over the counter that can be used to neutralize this feeling while the victim of Pink Eye awaits its departure.

Send a friend or family member to go get them, and have them leave them at your door for you. Thank goodness for text messaging!

""7. It’s all a Blur

Blurred vision can be a real problem with all that Pink Eye discharge going on. Yellow, green, and white… oh my! That would be difficult for anyone look through. Eye drops can help this, but just barely. If these symptoms continue beyond 7 days, you should see your doctor.

Likely, an antibiotic may be prescribed to you to help alleviate your vision impairing symptoms two to three times as fast as its natural course of the problem.

""8. Blinded by the Light

Sensitivity to light has been described by individuals experiencing pink eye. One can imagine… that feeling in your eyes when you’ve just woken up and someone flips the light switch without warning you.

The sense of pain in your eyes before they are able to adjust to the new surging light is a quite similar feeling to this symptom that individuals with pink eye have, although it last much longer and is very intense.

It may hurt the infected eye to receive light. Infected individuals will prefer to be in a dark shady area when experiencing this symptom of Pink Eye.

""9. Let’s get Swole

Again, not in the work-out way you might have hoped for. Swelling of the eyelid is a common symptom of Viral and Bacterial Pink Eye.

These may cause the eyelid to appear as though it is drooping, otherwise known as pseudoptosis. Although, swollen may be an easier descriptive word to remember.

It may appear as though the person with Pink Eye was in a back alley fight, receiving a nice shiner in the eye. This, again, is just the result of the sickness and swelling around the infected eye.

""10. Swollen & Tender

The area in front of the ears may become swollen and tender. This symptom is most commonly associated with Viral Pink Eye- the most contagious of the varieties, next to Bacterial.

This is a more unique symptom that is not often paired with other illnesses, so if you have this paired with redness of the eyes and itchiness in your eyes… it is unlikely to be anything other than Pink Eye.

Heat and cold can be used to reduce swelling and help with pain. Peace and quite does a lot of good for the healing process as well.

""11. Ouch!

Mild pain is a symptom of many forms of Pink Eye. While this overlaps a little with a burning sensation, it is unique in that it is more painful than burning so they are uniquely different feelings. No one wants to walk around feeling pain, and it can definitely be distracting while at work.

The best course of action is to get a doctors note (and review of the issue) and take a few days off from work (however long the doctor recommends is ideal) and just rest at home. Use comedy or good music you enjoy to take your mind off the discomfort and relive stress to promote the healing process.

""

12. Red-Red

The area around the eye is red. Usually, people think of pink eye as just the white part of the eye turning pink or red, but also, in more moderate to severe cases, the skin around the eye will be red as well.

These are all ways in which to, on the cheap, get a good idea about what is causing whatever symptoms you have.

This hopefully saves you time and money on the medical process, if you choose to pursue that route of treatment. The more you know, the better you can live, and the better decisions you may make.

""13. Headache and Migraine

When pinkeye infection starts, you may not notice it until it starts to present symptoms of itching and swelling around the eyelids. The following morning, you’ll wake to crusty eyelids, with your them stuck together. As the day progresses, you’ll notice that your eye becomes sensitive to bright light, especially when you’re out in the sun.

This sensitivity to light increases as time passes, and if left untreated and unmanaged, you can expect to develop a headache as your brain struggles to deal with the light. Pinkeye can affect the regular contraction and expansion of the retina, leading to your eye taking in more light than is necessary, leading to symptoms of headache.

If you experience tension headaches or migraines, you can expect to develop one of these conditions if there’s strong light around. It’s best to stay at home in a controlled light environment. This strategy prevents you from spreading the infection and ensures that you don’t develop a headache.

""

14. Swollen Eyelids

Pinkeye creates symptoms of inflammation around the eye. It’s for this reason that medical professionals gave it it’s moniker. The pink effect is a result of tissues in the eyelid, including the orbital septum, pre-aponeurotic fat, levator aponeurosis, and tarsus. The swelling produces the characteristic pink color in the eyelids, and as the condition progresses, the eye starts to turn pink as well.

Waking up to swollen eyelids filled with crusty pus is the hallmark of pinkeye, and the intensity of symptoms depends on the extent of the infection. Some people find that pinkeye clears in a few days, while others may struggle for weeks with the disease.

There are plenty of home remedies to reduce the swelling in the eyelids and extract the bacteria causing the pinkeye infection. Stat with a saltwater flush and dab some diluted apple cider vinegar on the eyelids to kill the bacteria. If the swelling does not improve, you may need to visit your doctor for some antibacterial eyedrops to alleviate your symptoms.

""15. Spreading to Both Eyes

If left untreated, pinkeye infection with continue to progress. Fortunately, most people seek treatment when home remedies fail. However, some may leave the condition hoping that the virus clears. However, pinkeye can occur due to both viral and bacterial infection of the tissues in the eye. Bacterial infections are far more difficult to sure, and they may be resistant to certain antibiotic eyedrops.

Should your home remedy or medicated eyedrops fail to clear the condition, you run the risk of the infection jumping to your other eye as well. We all unconsciously touch our face and rub our eyes during the day. While this is not a cause for concern in healthy individuals, it’s not a good idea for those infected with pinkeye to touch their eyes. You may rub your eyelid, transfer the bacteria or virus to your fingers, and then transfer it to the other eye, without being aware that you’re doing so.
