If your stomach constantly interrupts you because of the gurgling sounds it makes, you may be wondering what is causing this to happen. Most of the time, these noises are completely normal. However, at times it might be embarrassing, especially if your stomach gets loud during a meeting or in an otherwise quiet room.

When this occurs, you may be wondering what the cause might be and if there is anything that you can do about it. The term for stomach rumbling is borborygmi. As mentioned, most of the time, these noises are not serious. However, if it is an ongoing occurrence, there may be an underlying health issue that is the cause. If the noises are bothering you, it may be a good idea to discuss the issue with a health care provider. Here are 14 common causes of stomach gurgling.

1. Muscle Activation

When your stomach makes a gurgling or rumbling sound, it typically is not just coming from the stomach. Often, the noise is coming from the small intestine. The origin of the noise involves the activity of the smooth muscle located in the walls of the small intestine and the stomach. As the walls are activated through a set of contractions, which is called peristalsis, it mixes and propels food, air, gas, and fluids through the digestive tract.

When this occurs, a rumbling sound happens. Most often, these rumbling sounds are simply an act of a normal occurrence of digestion, and most people who experience this do not have any reason to be concerned. If you notice that these sounds are quite loud and occur every time you eat or at other times as well, you may want to mention it to your doctor as there could be something else going on.

2. Dairy Intolerance

Some people have a sensitivity to dairy. This sensitivity is referred to as being lactose intolerance, and it is fairly common. People who have lactose intolerance will have digestive issues when they eat any type of dairy. Those who suffer from lactose intolerance do not make enough of the enzyme lactase. Lactase is necessary for the digestion of lactose. Some of the common symptoms of lactose intolerance include diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal cramps.

People who have a dairy intolerance may also notice that after they eat any type of dairy product, their stomach makes gurgling noises. If you suffer from lactose intolerance, the best thing that you can do is avoid any products that contain dairy. This includes milk, cheese, butter, and yogurt. Some other foods often contain lactose as an ingredient such as cookies, chocolate, and baked dishes with creamy sauces.

3. Gluten Intolerance

Another food that may be causing you to experience a louder than normal stomach is gluten. Celiac disease is the most common term used for people who suffer from gluten intolerance. Some people experience symptoms of the disease more than others. Some people do not have Celiac disease, but still do not process gluten well. They may experience a rash, swelling, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, as well as other digestive issues.

If you are allergic to gluten, you may notice that your stomach gurgles loudly when you eat something that contains gluten. If you are suffering from negative reactions each time you eat gluten products, it may be time to cut it from your diet. If you continue to eat products containing gluten, your symptoms may get worse with time. Choosing a gluten-free diet is the best option to help you feel better. When you remove it from your diet, you will likely find that the gurgling sounds you have been hearing disappear as well.

4. Chocolate

Eating chocolate may trigger bloating and gas. One of the reasons is because chocolate contains caffeine. Other food and drinks that contain caffeine include soft drinks, tea, and coffee. If you are experiencing gurgling from your stomach to the point that it is embarrassing you and you are looking for a way to make it stop, try cutting caffeinated products from your diet.

Making this simple dietary change may be all that you need to do in order to stop your stomach from rumbling all of the time. Remember, dark chocolate is often touted as being healthy, but it also contains more caffeine than regular chocolate. If you are also lactose intolerant, cutting out chocolate is important as most types of chocolate also contain dairy products. Taking these steps of dietary changes can go a long way in making your digestive system function more properly.

5. Legumes

Beans and other legumes often will cause a person to be more gassy than usual. Also, if you eat a lot of legumes, you may find that your stomach will make loud noises after. If the body cannot properly digest the carbs found in beans, gas will then build up in the digestive tract. If you do not pass the gas through flatulence or by belching, your stomach will start to gurgle and rumble.

In some cases, you may experience cramping and other pain throughout your abdominal area. Legumes can be rough on the digestive tract, even though they are healthy to eat and should be a part of your regular diet. If you struggle after eating any type of legumes, you may want to cut back on them for a while or try to eat smaller servings of them when you do have them in your meal plan.

6. Vegetables

Some vegetables may trigger stomach gurgling as well as gas pains. Some of the more common vegetables that might cause you to hear your stomach gurgling more often include Brussel sprouts, lettuce, cauliflower, and broccoli. These vegetables produce gas, which may cause you to experience pain. If you are eating a lot of these vegetables and notice that your stomach is more noisy than usual, this might just be the culprit.

You may want to try some other vegetables mixed in or simply eat fewer of these at a time. If it is these types of vegetables that are causing your stomach to be gurgly, there is not much to worry about. Your symptoms will typically go away after a day or two. Drink a lot of water along with eating vegetables such as broccoli, and you should experience fewer digestive issues.

7. Fruits

Everyone always tells you to eat a diet that is full of fruits and vegetables. This is something that you should do as fruits and vegetables are full of important nutrients that your body needs in order to perform at optimal health. However, just as some vegetables can cause you to be gassier than normal, some fruits may be the culprit behind your noisy stomach.

Some of the fruits that could be the cause of your gurgling stomach include peaches, pears, and apples. These fruits tend to have a high fiber content. Fiber is important in helping with digestion. At times, the digestion process may be a little bit noisier than others. If you have recently eaten a lot of fruit and notice that your stomach is rumbling louder than usual, it is nothing to be concerned about. The noises will typically go away after the fruit is fully digested.

8. Hard Candy and Gum

When you suck on pieces of hard candy, you might ingest a lot of air. The sucking motion that you use when you are eating this type of candy often pulls air in through the mouth as well as the nose. The same goes for when you are chewing a piece of gum. When you take in too much air, you may end up with the hiccups.

You may also notice that you burp more when you eat hard candy or chew gum. Additionally, you may get a stomach ache or notice that your stomach gurgles more often after you have been chewing a piece of gum or sucking on a hard piece of candy for a period of time. The reason for this is because pressurized air builds up in the stomach, and this air will cause you to hear loud noises from your digestive system.

9. Fried Foods

Everyone knows that eating fried foods is not really good for them. In fact, fried foods are often very high in fat and can cause all sorts of health issues when you eat this type of food too often. Processed foods that are high in trans fat can be detrimental to your health. These types of foods are associated with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

In addition, fried foods are hard on your digestive tract. There can be damage caused by these types of foods as your body is going through the digestion process. You may experience symptoms such as heartburn or cramping. Foods such as donuts, french fries, margarine, and onion rings all could be the cause of the rumbling in your stomach that you are hearing. Cutting fried foods from your diet can go a long way when it comes to improving your overall health.

10. Hunger

Hunger is a symptom that is most often associated with a gurgling stomach. In fact, most of the time, when you hear your stomach make a rumbling or gurgling sound, you simply think that you need to eat something in order to make it go away. Hunger is something that may cause you to hear your stomach rumble. However, your stomach does not make the only rumble when you are hungry.

Gurgling is associated with hunger most of the time because when the stomach and small intestines are empty, the sound that they make when they are going through peristalsis seem much louder. This is because there is no food in the muscles to help muffle some of the noise that the organs will make. You may hear gurgling noises for up to 20 minutes, and they may occur every hour until you eat something. This is one reason for eating smaller meals throughout the day is often recommended.

11. Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome is a condition that is quite common. It affects the large intestine. Some of the symptoms and signs of irritable bowel syndrome include bloating, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. Some people with irritable bowel syndrome will experience diarrhea followed by constipation or the other way around. There are only a few people who suffer from IBS that experience severe symptoms.

At times, the symptoms of IBS can be managed through diet and other lifestyle changes to reduce stress. Counseling and medication may be necessary for more severe cases. If you notice bowel sounds that accompany other digestive issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, it is important to make sure that you talk to your doctor about all of your symptoms. This could be a sign of another underlying health issue that is more serious. Your doctor will help you understand the causes of your symptoms.

12. Hyperactive Bowels

If you notice that your stomach is making more noise than usual and you are concerned about the cause, you may want to see your doctor for some help. Your doctor will typically listen to your abdomen to help determine what is happening in your digestive system. Often, hyperactive bowel sounds are noted when you are experiencing diarrhea.

The increase in peristaltic movement combined with an increase in gas and fluid will amplify the sounds of watery stool going through the gut. Some malabsorption states may cause exaggerated bowel sounds. At times, organisms in the digestive tract may release hydrogen. When this occurs, fluids are attracted to the gut, and this will stimulate the contractions. Bacterial infections are a common cause of a hyperactive bowel. There may be medications that can help settle the enzymes in the gut, which in turn would quiet your stomach down.

13. Bloating

When your stomach is making a lot of weird noises, and you also have to bloat, there may be an imbalance of microorganisms in your stomach. Most often, beneficial bacteria will not produce gas or will produce less gas when they are fermenting. Unfriendly or pathogenic species will often produce a lot more gas. Bloating could also indicate that there are not enough enzymes being produced by the stomach.

When this occurs, it can mess with the digestive process as the stomach is not producing enough acid to break down the foods that you are eating. If you are experiencing bloating, try adding some fermented foods to your diet. This may include live yogurt, miso, kimchi, kefir, sauerkraut, and kombucha. These foods can help to support the microbial balance in the digestive system. You may also take a probiotic supplement to help support the health of your gut.

14. Constipation and Diarrhea

If you are constipated, it means that you are struggling to pass stool. When you are not passing stool regularly, it can cause all sorts of health issues. Constipation could be a sign that you have some type of blockage in your digestive tract. Eating a diet that is high in fiber can help to relieve the symptoms of constipation. You also want to make sure that you are drinking plenty of water.

Diarrhea occurs when there is an overgrowth of unbeneficial species found in the gut. Eating foods that contain beneficial bacteria species can help get the digestive system back on track. If you have a severe case of diarrhea or you are constipated, and it lasts for more than a couple of weeks, you need to seek medical attention to determine the cause. There could be something more seriously wrong with your digestive system, and you need to get proper treatment as soon as possible.
