Have you ever experienced a nosebleed? You might have been punched in the nose before at least one time before in your life, and statistics say that this is a very likely event – it has happened to many people, and it’s going to happen to many more people as time goes on. It’s a simple part of life. But then there are the slightly more bizarre causes of a nosebleed for which sometimes there seems to be no cause at all.

What about those types of nosebleeds? Here’s an investigation into why nosebleeds happen – and ten really bizarre causes for a nosebleed that you might not have thought of before now. Have you ever had a nosebleed happen because of any of these really bizarre reasons? Here are ten really bizarre nosebleed causes that you should remember if you ever have a nosebleed yourself or see someone else who is.

1. Trauma to the Nose

Okay, so we can go ahead and say that the first potential cause for a severe nosebleed is a fairly obvious one – and one that you might have guessed even far before you started reading this article, to begin with. The first cause for a nosebleed is a severe trauma to the nose, which can happen in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons.

The most obvious is taking a punch to the face – one that’s hard enough to cause the blood vessels and tissues in the nose to burst, which causes the bleeding to start. Other less obvious ways that the nose could start bleeding due to sudden trauma include people who are in the habit of picking their noses – this repeated action can burst tiny vessels in the nose and lead to what’s basically an instant nosebleed. This can sometimes be severe if left untreated.

""

2. Thinning the Blood

Thinning the blood can be another potential cause of your nose starting to bleed. There are many things that are able to thin the blood, and just to name some of them we have a lot of over the counter medications – most of which will include aspirin. There are many other medications that thin the blood as a potential side-effect, and we’d recommend that you ask your doctor about it if you have been having repeated occurrences of nose bleeds and haven’t been able to figure out why or have recently started taking a new kind of medication over the last few weeks.

The blood can also be thinned by certain foods (like garlic) and many drugs and alcohol are known for having a blood-thinning effect. When the blood becomes too thin for the body, the body can respond by spontaneously beginning to bleed. Blood-thinning causes nose bleeds!

3. Too much Heat

So, have your parents ever told you that it’s best to stay out of the sun? You should know that this isn’t only good advice to pass along, it also happens to be completely and entirely true: If you are getting too much heat, this literally increases the temperature of your body too far higher than what it should be, and this can lead to a huge variety of health problems arising – from sunburn, which most people know is extremely painful, to heatstroke, which is usually a combination of sunburn and extreme dehydration that will leave you feeling sick, groggy, tired and nauseous – and it can be deadly.

But, getting too much heat can also go on to cause other things, like the nose that begins to bleed simply because the body is overheating: There’s far too much blood pressure to go around, the body responds by starting to bleed.

""

4. Allergies

First, let’s define just what allergies are: They are your body’s response to external (sometimes, very rarely internal) stimuli, and this response is more often than not a very unpleasant one that causes everything in your body from your eyes to your lungs to inflame – this is, basically and in its most simple terms, what we would call having an allergic reaction.

If you are extremely prone to getting allergies than we would suggest that you speak to your doctor about going on prescription antihistamines for the long haul – and stay away from anything that can potentially trigger your allergies to start, like a massive field of sunflowers. This is especially true if you are prone to the type of nose bleeds that are caused by allergies. And yes, allergies can very well cause your nose to bleed – this is because the nose and the respiratory system suddenly dry out, bleeding.

""

5. Alcohol

We could find you a thousand studies on the benefits of consuming alcohol in moderation right this very second. But we could also find you a hundred thousand studies that speak of the ill-effects of consuming too much alcohol – and this includes many symptoms of which the most severe is death.

Alcohol has the potential to tear families apart, but for some, it’s just another way to escape and they do not need to drink enough to experience harmful effects. Whatever you think about alcohol and however you might feel about it, you should remember that it is in reality still a blood thinner – which means that it can have the same effect on your body as if you were to take a handful of blood-thinning medication: It can thin the blood to the point where you start experiencing seriously bad symptoms, including of course a nosebleed.

""

6. Dry Air

There are many things that can cause a nosebleed, but we’ve established that the optimum conditions that you want your nose to be in generally do not include dry and hot. Ideally, you should understand that your nose is meant to be slightly wet – yes, almost just like that of a dog – and this is because of the fact that your nose literally acts like a filter, getting rid of anything that would have made its way into your lungs had your nose not been there to stop it.

(This, just so you know, is also why people have hair in their noses – it allows them to be able to filter things through!) If you have too much hot, dry air to go around, then your nose isn’t in its optimal condition, and this dry environment can mean that you burst fine vessels in your nostrils – and again, you’ll bleed.

""

7. Something stuck in the nose

Okay, now we’re back to some of the more obvious causes of a nosebleed – and one that’s by far one of the most common causes for a nosebleed that we’ve seen before. It’s most commonly reported in medical literature and emergency rooms as being the cause for nosebleeds that occur in children – and it’s not all that hard to find out exactly why. Something stuck in the nose is one of the leading causes of a nosebleed – of course, the foreign object that’s stuck in the nose is bound to irritate the nose itself, and this in turn changes into a reaction that will cause the nose to bleed.

In this case, your main danger is the possibility of suffocation – especially if they cannot breathe through their nose as a result, and you should always seek medical attention here instead. Don’t try to remove it yourself: It can go deeper.

""

8. Nasal Trauma

We’ve briefly gone over trauma to the nose as being a potential cause for a nosebleed, although we’ve only gone over one type of nasal trauma earlier on in this article, and you should know that nasal trauma is actually a very broad definition that can encompass many different types of things that happen to the nose – no, we’re not just talking about the kind of nasal trauma that culminates in a straight-up hit to the nose, we’re also talking about the kinds of nasal trauma that are much more subtle – and sometimes, as gross as this might be to you, is entirely self-inflicted, too.

You should never pick at your nose, or scratch the inside of your nose too much – whether or not you realize this, you can rupture vessels in the inside of your nose – and, you guessed it, this by itself can trigger an instant nosebleed.

""

9. Liver Disease

Okay, so we’ve already gone through some of the most common causes that could be behind the regular nosebleeds that you haven’t been able to find a proper cause for up until now. But what about liver disease? We’ve already discussed just what alcohol can do to the body in the long term, and you should know that liver disease is very possibly one of these things too – but the liver disease can also happen on its own, completely independent of having been an alcoholic all of your life or not.

Liver disease can mainly trigger nosebleeds because of what it’s considered to do to the blood – it can thin the blood in much of the same way as taking painkillers would, and this can lead to a sudden nosebleed for reasons we have already gone over earlier on in this article. Other signs of liver disease can include yellowing skin.

""

10. Irritation to the Nose

So, do you think you can say with some confidence that you know almost everything that can cause a nosebleed? Well, we can say that you don’t quite know all of them yet – and that we’ve got one more potential cause of a nosebleed that’ll keep you reading. If you are experiencing repeated nosebleeds and can’t seem to find the cause for it, then you should consider that it’s something more severe in the form of repeated injury and irritation to the nose that’s causing your nosebleeds.

If you’ve already ruled out everything else we’ve mentioned on this list, it could still very well be due to the very rare fact that you might have nasal tumors. Yes, this is an extremely rare cause for nosebleeds, but it can still be considered as a cause – especially if you have ruled everything out, and if you have an existing family history.

""

11. Hypertension

This severe health disorder also goes by the moniker, “the silent killer,” due to its lack of noticeable symptoms. Hypertension is an increase in blood pressure attributed to many different health disorders, such as thickening of the artery walls and impaired kidney function. IF left untreated and unmanaged, hypertension can become a life-threatening condition.

High blood pressure affects the normal function of red blood cells, causing them to weaken. Most patients don’t notice the onset of the condition for a few years. During this period, hypertension slowly disrupts the normal blood flow around the body to vital organs, muscular tissue, and the brain.

Eventually, hypertension leads to cardiovascular complications that affect the heart and respiratory system. As a result, the patient may experience a heart attack or stroke due to the lack of blood flow to vital organs. Hypertension weakens blood vessel walls, making them prone to damage, and this may lead to frequent nosebleeds that seem to occur later in the day as blood pressure rises due to physical activity and stress.

""

12. Deviated Septum

The septum is the cartilage found in the nose that separates the nostrils. In most people, the septum provides an even separation between the nostrils. However, in people with a deviated septum, they may have one nostril that’s larger than the other. Affected individuals may have difficulty breathing through one of their nostrils, causing them to blow their nose frequently during the day to clear the airway.

As a result of the deviation and blockage of the one nostril, patients may blow hard, resulting in bursting of the blood vessels in the wall of the nose, leading to a nosebleed. Unfortunately, a nosebleed exacerbates the breathing issue.

Medical science believes a deviated septum is a hereditary condition, but it can also occur due to lifestyle choices, such as drug use and fighting, where the fighter receives regular injuries to the bridge of the nose. Patients can gain relief from the condition through surgical procedures that rebuild the septum.

""

13. Illicit Drug Use

Illicit drug use continues to rise in every state across America. Users of these dangerous addictive drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl, typically ingest them through snorting.

Sniffing these hazardous compounds creates inflammation in the nostrils. Addicts that frequently use throughout the day eventually wear down the tissue inside their nostrils leading to nosebleeds and an erosion of the septum, the cartilage between the nostrils. As a result of frequent nose bleeds when snorting drugs, addicts may progress onto other methods of consumption, such as injecting, resulting in further degradation of the physical and mental health.

If you or anyone you know has a drug problem, reach out to them and try to get them help. Addicts rarely have the will power to quit their habit by themselves, and as a result; their health declines and they ostracise themselves from normal society as the addiction takes control of their life.

""

14. Skull Fracture

This condition occurs due to blunt force trauma to the cranial bone – otherwise referred to as the skull. In most cases, brain trauma may also accompany severe fractures, causing hematoma on the brain, as blood pools around brain tissue. This hematoma leads to a nosebleed and is a sign of severe brain trauma.

Individuals should seek immediate medical treatment. Doctors in the emergency room run an MRI scan to analyze the extent of the injury. In some cases, surgical procedures may be necessary to relieve the intracranial pressure around the brain. If this pressure continues to build, the patient may experience a stroke, or fall into a coma which leaves them in a vegetative state for the rest of their life.

Some fractures may not present immediate symptoms if the source of the blunt force trauma is low-impact, such as slipping and knocking your head against the wall. However, it’s critical that you visit a doctor immediately after sustaining any form of head trauma – even if it’s a mild blow to the skull, it could still cause severe repercussions if not treated.
