Nearly 180 million Americans regularly use some form of artificial sweetener. This includes aspartame. The problem with this is that while these artificial sweeteners are touted as being a safe alternative to using sugar and even that they promote weight loss is actually a myth. In fact, from the beginning the story of aspartame has been deceitful.

Aspartame was first discovered in the 1960s and approved by the FDA in 1974 based on studies conducted by G.D. Searle & Company. A scientist from the FDA did point out several shortcomings of the studies that were used to help the FDA make their decision. However, his issues with the studies were largely ignored. Since being approved by the FDA there have been serious inquiries into whether or not aspartame is safe for consumption by humans. Here are 10 side effects of aspartame that you may not have known.

1. Headaches and Migraines

There have been several studies that have been completed that show that people who suffer from frequent migraines could be making them worse by consuming products that contain aspartame. This information is backed up by reports of many people who suffer from what was referred to as “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome.” This is when headaches occur after eating a meal that contains glutamates.

Glutamates are a byproduct of aspartame. If you suffer from frequent headaches and consume products that contain aspartame on a regular basis, cutting it out of your diet may help to resolve these issues for you. While there may be other underlying causes of your headaches and migraines, aspartame use may be the leading on. Try cutting back on the diet soda and other foods that contain aspartame and see if your headaches become less frequent. If they do, the aspartame may be the culprit.

2. Mood Disorders

For those who are prone to depression and even those who are not, aspartame sems to elicit further depressive episodes. Other people who consume aspartame may experience mood changes over time. This could be in the form of anxiety or frequent panic attacks. If you suffer from depression or any other type of mood disorder, avoiding aspartame is one of the best choices that you can make. Even if you are not prone to depression or other types of mood disorders, it is possible that aspartame can cause this to occur.

These mood disorders can become quite serious and may even lead to needing professional help so that you can cope. Many people often notice these mood swings after ingesting aspartame. Cutting it out from your diet can be the first step to helping to control the mood swings that you are experiencing. While you should still seek help to determine any other underlying issues, you should also try cutting aspartame from your diet.

3. Weight Gain

Contrary to popular belief, aspartame does not help you lose weight. In fact, it can do quite the opposite and actually make you gain weight. There have been many recent studies conducted that show that consuming artificial sweeteners disrupts the metabolic response within the body. One of the reasons for this is because artificial sweeteners provide a sweet taste, in some cases it is hundreds of times sweeter than regular sugar and this sweetness does not match the energy or the calories that the foods provide.

The body is designed to relate the sweet flavor to how it should be metabolized. When the sweetness is matched by the calories, the body is satisfied. When the sweet flavor is not followed by the right amount of calories, the brain does not get the same message. This can cause the brain to signal that it needs more, which messes up your metabolism.

4. Increased Risk of Developing Diabetes

Many people who have a history of diabetes in their families, have been diagnosed as a prediabetic, or have already been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes think that they now need to avoid sugar. While this is partially true and avoiding carbohydrates is very important when it comes to controlling the disease, what most people do not realize is that they should also be avoiding products that contain aspartame.

One of the side effects of aspartame is that it can actually cause a person to develop diabetes. Since it can affect a person’s metabolism, it can also affect the way that the body gets rid of sugars. This can cause damage to the pancreas, which then causes issues with the production of insulin. If you have been diagnosed with full blown diabetes or as a prediabetic, it is a good idea to avoid diet drinks and other foods that contain aspartame.

""

5. Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is quite common, in fact almost one out of every six people suffer from it. This syndrome is genetic and is most common among Native Americans, Asians, Hispanics, and African Americans. As you age, the risk of developing this syndrome go up. In addition to being genetic and common among certain people, it can also be caused by consuming aspartame. There have been links to consuming aspartame and the development of this syndrome.

Since aspartame messes with your metabolism, it only makes sense that it can cause this disorder to occur. There are many other factors that put you at risk for developing this syndrome. Some of these include insulin resistance, being overweight, smoking, and leading an unhealthy lifestyle, and hormonal imbalances. Making appropriate lifestyle changes while avoiding products that contain aspartame can help to control the symptoms of this disease.

""

6. Cancer

Perhaps one of the scariest side effects of consuming aspartame is that it increases the risk of developing cancer. In fact, one study that was done on animals found that even in small doses, the animals that were given aspartame were developing several types of cancer. Another important study was completed in 2012 and spanned over 20 years. This study found a clear association between the consumption of aspartame and the development of leukemia and non-hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The American Journal of Industrial Medicine made a commentary in 2014 that stated that there is not adequate support for the safety of aspartame. In fact, recent study results have provided consistent evidence that aspartame has carcinogenic potential. This means that there are direct links that consuming aspartame can increase the likelihood of a person developing certain types of cancer. For this reason alone, along with some of the other side effects noted about aspartame, it is definitely worth avoiding.

""

7. Heart Disease

Consuming drinks and foods that contain aspartame can increase your risk of developing heart disease. One study of almost 60,000 post-menopausal women showed that consuming just two diet drinks that contain aspartame per day can increase your risk of an early death from heart disease dramatically. A 2017 study conducted by the Canadian Medical Associate found that consuming artificial sweeteners is associated with a higher incidence of hypertension and other types of cardiovascular events.

This study concurred with what was found in a Physiology and Behavior study that was done in 2016. This particular study linked aspartame and other artificial sweeteners to cardiometabolic risks as quite troubling. If you are overweight, pre diabetic, diabetic, or at risk for heart related diseases genetically, it is a good idea to stay away from drinks and foods that contain aspartame as these can dramatically increase your risk of developing heart related diseases and other health issues.

""

8. Dementia

Drinking diet soda and consuming diet foods that contain aspartame can increase your risk of developing dementia by up to three times. If your family has a history of dementia, you are already at risk for developing it. If you consume diet drinks, you are only causing this risk of developing the disease to go up. Drinking aspartame laden drinks seems to be the worst culprit as the body breaks it down into methanol, which is converted to formaldehyde. This is quite dangerous for the entire body, but especially for the brain.

When the brain cannot distinguish between the sweetness of these drinks and sugar and expects calories to follow, it can cause many different types of issues. It is important to note that aspartame found in liquid form is worse that when it is found in powdered form such as what is used in baking. However, both are quite bad and should be avoided if possible.

""

9. Stroke

Consuming aspartame can also increase your risk of having a stroke. This makes sense when you consider that it also increases your risk of developing heart disease. One study showed that within 24 hours of giving rats aspartame in liquid form it had already been turned into methanol. This can cause oxidative stress within the brain. When the brain becomes stressed it can cause a person to have a stroke.

As the brain is unable to properly respond to the needs of the body, it can cause all types of issues, including motor skill issues. Many people who suffer from a stroke never fully gain the use of some of their limbs back, typically on one side of the body. Not only can consuming aspartame cause strokes, it can also cause a person to have a seizure. Once again this is associated with how the chemical affects the brain.

""

10. Brain Tumors

As mentioned above, one of the severe side effects of consuming aspartame is that it increases your risk of developing cancer. In addition, it can also cause tumors to develop. In fact, mice that were given aspartame almost always ended up with tumors in the brain. Most of the side effects of consuming aspartame seem to be neurological in nature. It can even mimic the symptoms of other diseases such as cipro tendonitis, fibromyalgia, gut dysbiosis, and prediabetes.

When brain tumors develop it can cause all types of health issues and may even cause personality disorders. Overall, aspartame can cause many different types of health issues that are related to the brain. Because of this, it cannot truly be considered safe and should be avoided. It is often better to use natural sweeteners including regular sugar than to consume any type of diet products that contain aspartame.
