The organs located in the abdomen are surrounded by a membrane or a sac that is called the peritoneum. Typically, the peritoneal cavity will only have a small amount of fluid inside of it. However, in women, this amount can vary by around 20 ml or a bit less than one ounce depending on where she is in her menstrual cycle. Ascites are a condition that refers to excess or an increase of fluid within the peritoneal cavity. When there is excess fluid in the peritoneal cavity it is not normal and the underlying cause needs to be determined. In addition to fluid building up in the abdominal area, extra fluid may start to build up in other areas of the body and cause swelling. This may occur in the feet, legs, and other organs including the lungs. Here are 15 common causes of ascites.

1. Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis of the liver is the most common reason that ascites develop. This disease occurs when damaged areas of the liver are replaced with scar tissue. When liver tissue is lost, liver failure can occur. One of the most common reasons that a person develops cirrhosis is because of drinking too much alcohol. Many alcoholics or people who drink alcohol on a regular basis end up damaging their liver, which leads to cirrhosis. When cirrhosis develops blood flow into the liver becomes blocked. This blockage will cause an increase in pressure through the portal vein. The portal vein is the main vein that delivers blood from the other organs in the digestive system to the liver. This blockage causes damage to the liver as it is not getting the nutrients that it needs from the body. When there is a blockage, it can cause a buildup of fluid in the abdomen, ascites.

""

2. Acute Liver Failure

Once again, the liver is one of the main causes of ascites. The liver plays an important role in digestion and because of this if the liver is not working properly a lot of other health issues can arise, including ascites. Acute liver damage can occur for a variety of reasons. Drug abuse, alcohol abuse, or an adverse reaction to medications can all cause damage to the liver. An injury to the abdomen may also cause acute liver failure. A person experiencing acute liver failure may have abdominal pain and notice swelling in the abdominal area. If you are experiencing these symptoms it is important to make sure that you see a doctor right away. Your doctor will conduct a physical exam to determine if your abdomen is swollen. If there is fluid in your abdomen, your doctor will drain the fluid and test it for infections and disease.

""

3. Budd-Chiari Syndrome

Budd-Chiari Syndrome will typically occur when a blood clot blocks or narrows the hepatic veins. The hepatic veins are responsible for carrying blood out of the liver. Budd-Chiari syndrome may be caused by blood clots that are located anywhere in the large or small veins that carry the blood out of the liver. Some people will have no symptoms of this condition while others will experience abdominal pain, fatigue, jaundice, or nausea. When the veins from the liver are blocked because of Budd-Chiari syndrome, it can cause fluid to build up in the abdomen. The fluid can cause a person to experience pain in the abdomen as well as other symptoms. Budd-Chiari syndrome can also lead to an enlarged spleen and at times might cause bleeding in the esophagus. A doctor can use doppler ultrasonography to detect any veins that might be narrow or blocked.

""

4. Heart Failure

When the heart becomes unable to pump fluid in the blood vessels it can cause a number of health issues. The most notable issue that can come from the heart not properly pumping blood throughout the body is that it can cause fluid to build up in the lungs and the other organs of the body. When fluid starts to build up around the organs, it can cause them to fail. The leakage of these fluids can enter the peritoneal cavity, which can cause ascites. The heart is responsible for pumping blood all through the body. When there is damage to the heart or the blood vessels in the body, it can cause many types of health issues and even death. If you are having symptoms such as fatigue, difficulty breathing, swelling, etc. It is important to make sure that you see a doctor in order to determine the underlying cause.

""

5. Nephrotic Syndrome

Nephrotic syndrome is a disorder that affects the kidneys. This disease causes the body to pass more protein into your urine than it should. Typically, nephrotic syndrome is caused by damage to the blood vessels of the kidneys that help to filter waste and extra water from the blood. Kidney damage can become life-threatening as your body is unable to process waste effectively. If you have been diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome you may also develop ascites as fluid can build up throughout your abdomen. If you are diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome treatment will typically include treatment of the condition that has caused it to occur along with taking medications. Nephrotic syndrome can increase your risk of getting blood clots and infections. Dietary changes and medications are often recommended to avoid complications. If left unchecked, nephrotic syndrome can become quite dangerous.

""

6. Acute Pancreatitis

Gallstones, alcohol abuse, chemical exposure, and medications are all common causes of acute pancreatitis. Infections, hereditary diseases, trauma, high-fat levels, and surgical procedures are also some of the reasons a person might develop acute pancreatitis. When the pancreas is not functioning properly or becomes inflamed, it can cause fluid to build up around it. Often, the fluid build-up surrounding the pancreas is caused by the reaction of the body to inflammation. Your body is trying to fight the cause of the inflammation and reacts by producing more fluid. Some of the symptoms of pancreatitis include abdominal pain, swelling, fever, nausea, dehydration, and rapid heartbeat. If you notice swelling in your abdominal area and have some of the other symptoms, including nausea and vomiting. there is a chance that you have pancreatitis. It is important to see a doctor right away to determine the underlying cause so that you can get the proper treatment.

""

7. Chronic Pancreatitis

Chronic pancreatitis is similar to acute pancreatitis as it starts out that way. As the pancreas becomes scarred from the inflammation, it is unable to return to a normal state. The damage caused to the gland will worsen with time. Most of the causes of chronic pancreatitis are the same as acute pancreatitis. Abusing alcohol, certain medications, gallstones, infections, hereditary diseases, trauma, high-fat levels, and surgical procedures are all reasons a person might develop chronic pancreatitis. People suffering from chronic pancreatitis may or may not have abdominal pain. Some of the symptoms of chronic pancreatitis include liver issues such as jaundice, bleeding from anemia, weight loss, the inability to produce insulin resulting in diabetes, and nutritional deficiencies. Chronic pancreatitis is diagnosed in the same way as acute pancreatitis. Your doctor will likely recommend dietary changes. You should not drink alcohol if you have pancreatitis or have any type of fluid build-up.

""

8. Peritoneum Irritation

The peritoneum plays an important role in the protection of the organs in the abdominal area. As mentioned, this protective membrane always has some fluid in it. When there is more fluid than normal it is called ascites. If the peritoneum becomes irritated for any reason, it can cause fluid to build up. An infection, tumor, or another irritant could be the cause of this fluid build-up. As the peritoneum becomes irritated, it may respond by leaking fluid. This response can cause more fluid to enter the abdominal cavity and surrounding organs. At times, once the infection or irritation is gone, the fluid will go back to normal levels. However, if you have an infection that is causing you to have more fluid build-up than needed, you should make sure that you go to the doctor for treatment as this can be the sign of a more serious health issue including cancer.

""

9. Constrictive Pericarditis

Constrictive pericarditis is a condition that has the main characteristic of the fibrotic thickened pericardium. As the pericardium thickens and becomes more fibrosis, it can limit the ability of the heart to function the way that it is supposed to. This condition is quite difficult to diagnose, which is why it is important to understand the underlying cause. Some of the symptoms of constrictive pericarditis include a swollen abdomen, fatigue, general weakness, swelling of the limbs, and difficulty breathing. The main cause of constrictive pericarditis is likely tuberculosis. It is found most often in areas where tuberculosis is common. As the pericardium thickens, it can cause ascites as fluid builds up around the liver, lungs, heart, and other important organs. If you are having any of the symptoms of constrictive pericarditis it is important to discuss them with your doctor to determine the underlying cause.

""

10. Kwashiorkor

Kwashiorkor is a disease that is caused by severe malnutrition. The characterizations of the disease include enlarged liver and edema. A person who has a sufficient calorie intake, but does not include enough protein, can develop this issue. Pitting edema, which is the swelling of the feet and ankles is the defining sign of this illness. A distended abdomen is also a sign that a person is suffering from kwashiorkor. This issue is more prominent in third world countries where people may not get enough protein in their diets. However, there is no defining etiology of why this might occur in some people. A person suffering from kwashiorkor can develop ascites as fluid builds up around their organs and causes swelling. Dietary changes are typically necessary to help combat the health issues that arise from this condition. Early treatment for this issue is important in recovery.

""

11. Serositis

Serositis is when the serous tissues in the body become inflamed. This includes the tissues that line the heart, lungs, and the inner lining of the abdomen, and all of the organs that reside within the abdomen. Serositis is commonly found with creeping fat or fat wrapping. There are many conditions that can cause serositis including chronic kidney failure, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, inflammatory bowel disease, acute appendicitis, familial Mediterranean fever, and cutaneous systemic sclerosis. When the tissues of the body become inflamed as a result of serositis, it can cause many health concerns. The inflammation of the organs can cause fluid to leak. Swelling in the abdomen or other areas of the body might occur as a result. Serositis can cause many health issues, which is why it is important to find the underlying cause. Treatment will vary based on what is causing the serositis.

""

12. Hypothyroidism

An underactive thyroid, hypothyreosis, low thyroid, or hypothyroidism is an issue with the endocrine system that causes the thyroid to not produce enough of the thyroid hormone. There are many issues that a person may experience as a result of this. Some of the symptoms include constipation, a slower heart rate, exhaustion, weight gain, and depression. Swelling in the front area of the throat may also occur as the result of a goiter. One of the most common causes of hypothyroidism throughout the world is a lack of iodine in the diet. When the thyroid is not functioning properly, it can cause many health issues including ascites. Often, ascites occur as a result of inflammation in one of the main organs of the body. The body will react by leaking fluid into the body that can cause swelling in the abdomen, feet, and other areas of the body.

""

13. Mastocytosis

Mastocytosis is a rare disease that affects mast cells. People who have mastocytosis can have a number of symptoms including hives, itching, and shock. This is caused by histamine and other inflammatory substances being released from the mast cells. As mentioned, inflammation can cause a number of health concerns including ascites. When the body is producing mast cells that are essentially not functioning, it can cause a huge build-up of unnecessary cells throughout the body. This can cause the veins to become clogged, which in turn can cause damage to the organs and also inflammation in different areas of the body. When the organs are damaged from these useless cells, it can cause leaks, which may result in fluid building up throughout the body. While this disease is not common, people suffering from ascites will want to make sure that mastocytosis is not the underlying cause.

""

14. Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer and other diseases of the ovary are often associated with ascites. Many women who have ovarian cancer will initially not have any symptoms. In fact, most women will find out that they have ovarian cancer as a result of ascites. The tumors that are caused by ovarian cancer can put pressure on the surrounding organs. This pressure can result in fluid leaking, resulting in ascites. Meigs syndrome is a condition where a benign tumor forms on the ovary. This condition often presents with pleural effusion, which is fluid in the cavities that surround the lungs. Additionally, fluid is often present in the abdominal cavity as well. Ovarian cancer is known as a silent killer because most women do not have any symptoms until cancer has reached a later stage, which makes it more difficult to get rid of. It is important to have checkups regularly to note any changes in your abdomen and other female reproductive parts.

""

15. Alcohol Abuse

The liver is one of the most important organs in the body. Abusing alcohol can cause damage to the liver. When you drink alcohol it can trigger trypsin being activated inside of the pancreas. In addition, frequent alcohol consumption can also cause gallstones to develop. People who abuse alcohol will often develop pancreatitis. The repeated episodes of inflammation of pancreatitis can cause damage that becomes permanent. The abuse of the pancreas along with the abuse of the liver can cause cirrhosis of the liver, which is another reason that ascites can develop. If you are suffering from ascites or one of the other health conditions on this list it is important to stop drinking alcohol. Continuing to consume alcohol can result in worsening conditions and may cause liver failure, kidney, failure, and heart conditions as well. Diet, exercise, and not consuming alcohol are recommended for anyone that is suffering from these ailments.
