A general term for brain damage, brain disease, or brain malfunction is encephalopathy. The main symptom associated with encephalopathy is an altered mental state. Often, encephalopathy is a complication of a more primary issue such as kidney failure, anoxia, or alcoholic cirrhosis. There is a broad spectrum of symptoms that encephalopathy can present with. Some of the symptoms are mild such as a subtle personality change or memory loss. Other symptoms are more severe such as coma, seizures, dementia, and possibly death. Generally speaking, encephalopathy is manifested through altered mental states that are come with physical manifestations such as poor coordination. Typically, in most cases of encephalopathy, the diagnosis is accompanied by other terms that describe the cause, reason, or other special conditions. Here are 15 common causes of encephalopathy. There are different types of encephalopathy, so the causes of this issue can be quite varied.

1. Physical Injury

Repeated trauma can result in encephalopathy. When repeated traumas occur, it can cause what is referred to as chronic traumatic encephalopathy. If the trauma occurs to the head, it can cause damage that affects the function of the brain. When a person has multiple injuries to the head over time, it can result in chronic traumatic encephalopathy. For example, a person who plays football may have repeated injuries to their head. This is why helmets are extremely important. Even when wearing a helmet, a football player often receives blows to the head that can cause the brain to change over time. People in the military are also at a higher risk for developing this type of encephalopathy. The brain is extremely important and it is well protected by the skull. However, if you are exposing the head to many injuries over time, it can result in mental health damages that cannot be reversed.

""

2. Uremic Encephalopathy

Another type of encephalopathy that might occur is uremic encephalopathy. This is a type of encephalopathy that is caused by toxins building up in the body. A person who suffers from kidney disease or kidney failure might develop uremic encephalopathy as a result of the uremic toxins building up in their blood. It is important to make sure that you are getting proper care if you are suffering from any type of kidney issue. The kidneys are responsible for flushing toxins from the body. When the kidneys are not functioning properly it can cause any number of health issues. As the toxins build up in the body, they can be transported to the brain. When these toxins enter the brain they can cause mental health issues, this includes changes in personality. Treating the underlying issue such as kidney disease is important when it comes to treatment for the symptoms of encephalopathy.

""

3. Hepatic Encephalopathy

The liver is a very important organ in the body. It is responsible for clearing the body of toxins and other things. It essentially flushes out bad things from the body. When the liver is not functioning properly it can cause many health issues. People who consume too much alcohol will often end up with the liver disease. Cirrhosis of the liver is common among alcoholics. When a person has developed liver disease it can cause hepatic encephalopathy. This occurs as toxins start to build up in a person’s blood. Once again, these toxins can travel all throughout the body. When this occurs it can cause a person to have damage to their brain. When this type of damage occurs as a result of these toxins, a person might suffer from memory loss, mood disorders, and other mental health issues. This can become quite serious, which is why it is important to seek out medical treatment for any symptoms you might be having.

""

4. Toxic Metabolic Encephalopathy

Toxic metabolic encephalopathy can occur when there is a chemical imbalance in the body. A chemical imbalance might be caused by toxic chemicals entering the body through the food that you eat or the air that you are breathing. Infections can also cause a chemical imbalance in the body. When the chemical imbalance affects the function of the brain, toxic metabolic encephalopathy occurs. This may result in a person experiencing memory loss, change in personality, stroke, heart attacks, and other serious health conditions. If you are exposed to chemical toxins or if you are suffering from an infection and notice that you are experiencing some of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible to determine the underlying cause. Allowing these chemicals to continue to be imbalanced can result in many unwanted health conditions, which is why determining the underlying cause is extremely important.

""

5. High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure might not seem like too big of a deal to many people. After all, most of the time a person with high blood pressure will not have too many symptoms. However, high blood pressure can result in many other health issues that can be quite detrimental. People who suffer from high blood pressure are at a higher risk of developing other heart conditions. Diabetes and other serious health issues can be a result of high blood pressure as well. When a person has high blood pressure it can also cause swelling in different areas of the body. This buildup of fluid in the body can be quite dangerous. When the swelling occurs in the brain it can result in a brain injury. When a person has a brain injury as a result of high blood pressure it is called hypertensive encephalopathy.

""

6. Lack of Oxygen

The brain needs oxygen in order to survive. In fact, the entire body relies on oxygen in order to function properly. When you are not getting enough oxygen to your brain, there are many issues that may result. You may experience brain fog, where you cannot seem to remember where you are or what you are doing. A lack of oxygen to the brain can also lead to serious health issues if it goes on for too long. When a person has a lack of oxygen going to their brain, it could cause mental health issues. Parts of the brain may stop functioning. A person who suffers from a lack of oxygen may develop what is referred to as hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. This can become quite dangerous very quickly. If you are having difficulty breathing, go to the doctor right away. It is important to get oxygen to the brain as quickly as possible in order to reduce the damage that this can cause.

""

7. Vitamin B Deficiency

Vitamin B is a crucial vitamin for your overall health. People who suffer from a vitamin B deficiency may notice that they are feeling very tired all of the time. Another common symptom is numbness in the hands and feet. Sores around the mouth might also appear. When it comes to brain function, Vitamin B-1 is extremely important. If a person has low amounts of vitamin B-1, they could develop a brain disease that is called Wernicke encephalopathy. A vitamin B-1 deficiency may stem from malnutrition, alcohol abuse, and issues absorbing food in the gut. It is important to make sure that you are getting blood work done on a regular basis in order to ensure that you have proper levels of all of the important vitamins and nutrients including B vitamins. A blood panel will show your doctor what your vitamin levels are at. If you are low on vitamin B-1, a supplement might be suggested to help boost your levels.

""

8. Prion Disease

One of the most serious types of encephalopathy is infectious encephalopathy. At times this type of encephalopathy occurs from a group of conditions referred to as prion diseases. It may also be the result of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. These are progressive diseases and they are linked to mutations in a protein named prion. Prion diseases are neurodegenerative, which means that they can damage the brain. Over time, the diseases cause the function of the brain to get worse. One of the main features of this type of disease is when tiny holes appear in the brain, which makes the brain look more like a sponge. Some of the prion diseases that can cause infectious encephalopathy include chronic wasting disease, kuru, and fatal familial insomnia. The main issue with these diseases is that they cause the brain to essentially waste away, causing serious mental changes in the person suffering from the disease.

""

9. Hashimoto’s Encephalopathy

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a disease that affects the function of the thyroid. There is no real known cause of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. However, most medical professionals believe that this is a disease that is inherited, which means it only occurs in people who have the gene for developing it. It can be passed down through families for generations. A person who is suffering from Hashimoto’s thyroiditis can have many types of health issues as this disease causes the thyroid to not function properly. The thyroid plays a very important role in hormone production. When the body has the proper hormones being produced it runs smoothly. Too many or too few of any type of hormone can cause serious illness in a person. A person with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis may also develop what is referred to as Hashimoto’s encephalopathy. This occurs when the brain is affected as a result of the autoimmune disease.

""

10. Glycine Encephalopathy

Glycine encephalopathy is an inherited or genetic condition. This condition causes a person to have really high levels of glycine located in the brain. Glycine is an amino acid that the body needs to survive. However, when this amino acid is higher than normal in the body and especially in the brain, it can cause many different health issues. Most of the time a person who suffers from glycine encephalopathy will know from birth as many of the symptoms will appear not long after a person is born. The condition can cause many health issues as amino acids affect the function of the brain. Since diagnosis is typically done at birth, a person can live with this condition and receive treatment from a very early age. If the symptoms do not appear until later, treatment might be different and a misdiagnosis might occur.

""

11. Parasitic Encephalopathies

Parasites can live within the body without you even knowing they are there. There are some parasites that are actually helpful and help rid the body of toxins. However, there are also parasites that can be quite dangerous. If a parasite enters the body, it can get into the bloodstream and wreak havoc on your entire body. If the parasite enters the brain it can cause damage to the brain that can be irreversible. When this occurs it is called an infectious encephalopathy. This type of encephalopathy can be quite dangerous as the parasite is inside of the brain and causing damage. The symptoms of parasitic encephalopathy will depend on what area of the brain the parasite is in. it is important to see a doctor in order to determine the underlying cause of any mental issues and other health issues that you might be experiencing.

""

12. Bacterial Infections

Our body deals with bacteria regularly. In fact, the body is made to fight off bad bacteria and gets help from good bacteria. The digestive system is a good example of good bacteria helping aid in the process as these good bacteria reside in the stomach and help aid in digestion. However, there are times when bad bacteria overcome the good bacteria and that is when many health issues occur. Infections caused by bacteria are often treated with antibiotics. These medications are designed to help the body fight off bad bacteria. Unfortunately, there are times when the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and get to the brain. When this occurs a person might develop bacterial encephalopathy. Often, a person will develop a fever, could have seizures, experience neurological deficits, and have an altered mental status. If you are running a fever and notice behavioral changes, it is a good idea to go to your doctor to determine the underlying cause.

""

13. Viral Infections

Viruses can cause many illnesses. There are numerous viruses that cause millions of people to become sick every year. The flu virus is one of the most common viruses that people deal with each year. vaccination can help the body fight off these nasty bugs. However, viruses can be tricky and cause a person to be sick for very long periods of time. Unfortunately, aside from vaccinations, there is no real cure for fighting off a virus that enters the body. There are some viruses that attack the brain along with other areas of the body. When a virus is attacking the brain it can result in the person having an altered mental state. A person might experience a stroke or even enter into a coma as the brain function shuts down. This can be extremely dangerous. Fevers, chills, and seizures are all possible signs of a viral infection.

""

14. Fungal Infections

Most people associate fungal infections with the outside of the body. The finger and toenails, feet, and jock area are common places for a fungal infection to occur. However, there are fungi that can enter the body as well. Ringworm is a common fungus that can be inside the body. A Ringworm is not a worm, but a fungus and causes a ring to appear on the skin. When a person has a fungal infection it typically can be treated with a topical ointment or another type of medication. However, if fungal infections are left unchecked, they can become quite serious. If the fungus gets into the bloodstream or enters the brain, neurological issues can become present. A person might have mood swings, run a fever, become delirious, have a seizure, or have other serious health problems. It is important to determine the underlying cause of the symptoms so that proper treatment can be provided.

""

15. Encephalitis vs. Encephalopathy

When it comes to encephalopathy, there are numerous causes. In fact, it can be difficult to pin down an exact definition because of all of the different types and encephalopathy is a very broad term. At times, people confuse encephalopathy with encephalitis. While both encephalitis and encephalopathy affect the brain, encephalitis is when there is an inflammation in the brain. This is often caused by a virus. However, a virus can cause encephalopathy as well. Encephalopathy is the term used to describe temporary or permanent brain damage, a brain disorder, or brain disease. Encephalopathy will affect the structure of the brain or the function of the brain. Encephalopathy can also be degenerative, meaning that it will get worse with time. Knowing the difference between the two is important as they have different meanings and causes, which can affect diagnosis and treatment for the issue.
