The digestive system of the body is complicated. It starts as soon as you put food in your mouth and begin chewing. Your body then works through the food and pulls out all of the nutrients that are necessary to keep your body up and running properly. Once all of the nutrients from your food are taken, a bowel movement will take place in order to rid the body of all of the unused products. Typically, your bowel movements will be brown in color. This is from bilirubin and bile. Bilirubin is a byproduct of red blood cells and is produced in the liver. It then combines with bile in the gallbladder. While your poop is typically brown, it can be in other colors as well. The size, consistency, odor, and color can be different each time you produce. Here are some common reasons your poop might be yellow.

1. Liver Disorders

One of the reasons that your bowel movements might come out a different color other than brown is because of an issue with your liver. Your liver is a filter for your body. If you are filling your body with foods and beverages that are not good for you, there can be a lot of toxins that have to be removed. This can cause your liver to have to work extra hard to rid your body of toxins. Alcohol is one of the main items that can cause your liver to work overtime and cause damage to this important organ. Hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver are both diseases that will eliminate or greatly reduce the number of bile salts produced in the liver. Bile salts help to digest food and absorb nutrients from it. If you have one of these health issues or if your liver is simply not healthy, you might be seeing stool that is yellow in color.

""

2. Gallbladder Disorders

Another reason that you might be seeing stool that is another color besides the normal brown is because of your gallbladder. If your gallbladder is not working properly, there is a good chance that you are having bouts of diarrhea and possibly other times when you cannot seem to poop at all. When you have diarrhea, there is a good chance that it is yellow in color. When the ducts of the gallbladder become clogged by sludge or even by gallstones, it does not allow as much bile to enter your stool. When there is less bile in your stool, it can cause it to look more yellow in color. When you have gallstones you will likely not only experience stool that is lighter in color but pain as well. You might notice cramping or pains in your side. If you are experiencing these symptoms it is a good idea to discuss this with your doctor.

""

3. Celiac Disease

People who are allergic to gluten may experience stool that is runny and yellow. Some people have a minor allergy to gluten, while others have what is called celiac disease. When a person who has celiac disease eats gluten, which is a protein that is found in barley, rye, and wheat, the immune system will respond by starting to attack the tissues located in the small intestine. This response from the immune system causes the tissues to become damaged. When the tissues of the intestine are damaged, the ability to absorb nutrients by the intestines is compromised. Along with yellow stool, a person with celiac disease might also experience constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, depression, headaches, bloating, and nausea. If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is important to find the underlying cause. Your doctor will help you come up with a diet and a plan to help control this issue if it is the cause of your yellow stool.

""

4. Pancreas

The pancreas is also an important part of the digestive system. One of the things that the pancreas does is release enzymes. These enzymes help to support normal poop. If you are having issues with your pancreas, you might experience stool that is yellow in color. In addition, issues with the pancreas can cause your bowel to have a floaty or frothy appearance. You might also notice an odor that is more foul than normal. One of the issues that you might experience with the pancreas is an infection. Inflammation of the pancreas might be causing the issue as well. Stones can develop and block the ducts that come out of the pancreas, which can cause inflammation and other issues. It also could be a sign of pancreatic cancer. If you are experiencing a yellowish stool that is foamy and smells bad, it is a good idea to discuss this issue with your doctor to determine the underlying cause.

""

5. Food Intolerance

Some people do not tolerate certain foods well. If you have a food intolerance, it could cause your stool to come out yellow or a lighter color. People who suffer from lactose intolerance often will experience lighter-colored stool. One of the reasons for this is because the GI tract becomes irritated. When this occurs, the food will move quickly through your system. When food moves too quickly through your body it does not have time to pick up bile and bilirubin that turn the stool brown. Essentially, the food is moving through your body at a fast pace as your gastrointestinal tract is simply trying to rid your body of what it thinks is a toxin. When this occurs, your stool will likely be very watery and a yellowish color. Cutting certain foods from your diet should help if this is the cause of your yellow stool.

""

6. Babies

A stool that is yellowish in color is normal for newborns and small babies. Nursing babies will have a yellow stool for quite a while after they are born. If you are not nursing your baby, the stool will typically turn brown after a few days. If you are only breastfeeding your baby it is normal for their stool to be yellow until you introduce formula or solid foods. The baby is using all of the nutrients from your breast milk and digesting it fairly quickly, which is why the stool remains yellow. When food or supplements are introduced, it is harder for the baby to digest and the solid food or formula will go slower through the digestive tract, which provided it time to turn a brownish color. Typically, if you have a baby that is pooping yellow, there is nothing to be concerned about.

""

7. Certain Foods

If you are not a baby and you notice that your poop is yellow in color, one of the first things that you should consider is what you have been eating over the past couple of days. If you have eaten a lot of sweet potatoes, carrots, or other foods that are rich in beta carotene, it might just be the cause of your yellow stool. Turmeric is another culprit of turning stools yellow. If you have eaten foods that have artificial colors, it could be the reason your stool is yellow as well. The reason for this is because your body had difficulty digesting the pigment from the dye. If you have not eaten beta carotene-rich foods or foods with yellow or other color dyes, it still could be that you are pooping yellow because of something you ate that simply disagreed with you.

""

8. Infections

When food moves too quickly through your gastrointestinal tract, it will likely come out looking yellow or green, or greenish. One of the reasons that food might pass quickly through your GI tract is because you have an infection. Infections can be caused by any number of things including bacteria and viruses. Parasites can also cause infections and can be picked up by eating food that is contaminated or drinking contaminated water. You can also pick up an infection from another person or animal that has an infection. Chances are if you have an infection that is causing your stool to be yellowish in color, you will eventually pass the toxins out of your body and your stool will be back to normal in a few days. If you have issues that last longer than a few days, it is a good idea to consult your doctor to determine what is causing your digestive issues.

""

9. Giardia

Picking up a parasite is not common, but it is not exactly uncommon. Intestinal parasites are organisms that can live in your intestinal tract. Most parasites are transmitted from food or water, but there are some that can be transmitted from another person or even an animal. Giardia is one of the more common parasites in the United States. This parasite causes a person to experience stool that appears yellow in color. The stool is typically soft or has a liquid consistency. The parasite causes food to move quickly through the intestinal tract, which is why it is yellow in color. If you have giardia, you will typically also experience other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and cramping. If you are diagnosed with giardiasis, your stool will often be a bright yellow in color. Your doctor should be consulted for treatment if you have symptoms of giardiasis.

""

10. Biliary System Issues

If you have too much fat in your stool, it can cause it to appear yellow in color. Your stool might look oily or leave a residue behind. Having excess fat in your stool can be caused by a number of different types of disruptions in your digestive system. However, if it is very smelly, frothy, and floats in the toilet bowl, it is a sign that you might have a problem with your biliary system. This means that you are not making enough bile or there is not enough bile being released into the digestive tract. The biliary system consists of the pancreas, liver, and gallbladder, so any of these areas might be the cause of the problem. If your stool is pale grey or yellow, it is a sign that you might have an issue with one of the organs that make up the biliary system. If this is left unchecked, it can cause many other health issues.

""

11. High Fat Diet

If your diet is full of fatty foods, especially fried foods, there is a chance that it is messing with your stool. Processed foods that are full of fat are harder for your body to digest. These foods make digestion difficult and also speed up the pace at which they go through the digestive tract. This is especially true for people who normally eat a healthier diet. If you typically eat healthier foods and have binged on fatty fried foods for a day or over the weekend, it could cause your stools to turn yellow. In addition, your stool may appear more watery as it passes through the intestines so quickly. If you are experiencing this, cut out the fatty foods and your stool color should go back to normal. If your stool is still yellow in color, it could be a sign that you have an infection or another issue with your digestive tract.

""

12. Medications

If you are taking a new medication it could cause issues with your bowel movements. There are some medications that cause you to have diarrhea and others that might cause you to become constipated. Some medications such as weight loss medications work by reducing the amount of fat that is absorbed in the intestine. This reduction can lead to color changes in your stool and may increase the speed of intestinal transit. If you are taking any type of new medication and notice a change in the color of your stool or notice a change in the consistency of your stool, chances are that this is simply a side effect of the medication and should go away when you stop taking it. If the problem is severe, you should discuss it with your doctor as there is likely another type of medication that you can take that will not cause these issues.

""

13. Stress

If you are feeling a lot of stress it can cause issues with your digestive system. Many people do not realize how much damage stress can do to their overall health. When you are feeling stressed your body may not absorb all of the nutrients in the food that you are eating. When your body does not digest the nutrients from your food, you may end up with stool that is watery and yellowish in color. Stress can cause other health issues as well including heart disease, high blood pressure, and more. If you are finding yourself feeling stressed often it is important to make sure that you take time for yourself. Practicing meditation or yoga can help relax your body and alleviate some of the physical symptoms you might be experiencing. Finding something that helps you relax can go a long way when it comes to your overall health.

""

14. Anxiety and Depression

Many people have anxiety and with that often comes depression. Your mind is a very powerful thing and when you are feeling anxious about things it can cause you to experience digestive issues. You might not eat healthy foods because of the way that you are feeling. Changes in your diet, because you are anxious or depressed, can cause your stool to look different. If you are eating unhealthy foods or simply not eating at all, your digestive system is going to suffer. There are many treatments available for anxiety and depression and it is important to make sure you are discussing your feelings with your doctor, especially if it is causing you to experience digestive issues such as stool that is yellow or another color. Therapy can often be quite helpful when it comes to the treatment of these mental disorders and you should always reach out for help when you need it.

""

15. Gilbert Syndrome

Gilbert syndrome affects between three and seven percent of people in the United States. This is a genetic disorder of the liver. People who suffer from this disorder will have time frames where their bilirubin levels spike and are really high. Some of the symptoms of Gilbert Syndrome include yellow stool and jaundice. Jaundice can cause the skin and whites of the eyes to appear yellow in color. Often the symptoms of Gilbert syndrome are quite mild and many people do not realize that they have it. It is important to note that high levels of bilirubin in the body can be quite dangerous. This is also a sign that your liver is not functioning properly. If you notice a yellow tint to your skin and you have a yellow stool, it is important to discuss this with your doctor to determine the cause.
