Sleep, water, food, and exercise are all things that your body needs in order to survive. Every time that you breathe, your body pulls oxygen in through the lungs. This oxygen then enters the blood and travels throughout the body using your veins, arteries, and blood vessels. Some of your blood vessels are large and others are small. When a blockage occurs in one of these vessels it can result in ischemia. When ischemia occurs it means that a part of your body is not getting enough oxygen. Additionally, your body is not getting enough blood when this occurs. This can happen to your legs, brain, heart, and just about anywhere in your body. Ischemia is typically caused by a blockage or build-up in the arteries. How ischemia feels will depend on the area of the body that it is located. Here are 15 common symptoms of ischemia.

1. Areas of the Body Ischemia Occurs

As mentioned, ischemia can occur in different parts of the body. The symptoms of this dangerous condition will depend on the area of the body it is located in. if ischemia occurs in the heart it can cause a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, or heart failure. Ischemia of the heart may be referred to as myocardial ischemia, ischemic heart disease, or cardiac ischemia. If ischemia occurs in the brain it can cause a person to experience a stroke. When ischemia occurs in the legs it can cause intense pain even when you are not moving. If you do not treat ischemia in the leg, it can cause you to have your limb removed. Mesenteric ischemia is when the condition occurs in your intestines. This can cause a part of your intestine to die, leaving a hole. This can occur in both the large and small intestines.

""

2. No Symptoms

There are not always symptoms of ischemia. This is called silent ischemia. When a person has ischemia and does not have any symptoms, it could cause a stroke or a heart attack to occur. This might happen out of nowhere. It is important to make sure that you are having regular checkups including bloodwork. If your doctor feels like you might have a blockage in one of your arteries or veins, they may order further testing to determine how much blockage is there. Once the blockage is found there are several treatment options. If the blockage is severe, surgery to remove the buildup can be ordered. Diet and exercise programs are often recommended for people who are overweight and suffering from blocked arteries. Your doctor will help you come up with a plan. Unfortunately, since sometimes symptoms do not appear, it can often be too late for treatment.

""

3. Chest Pain

A person who has ischemia of the heart might experience chest pain. This pain can be quite severe and can cause a heart attack to occur. If you are having chest pain it is important to make sure that you seek out medical help right away. There are many different reasons that a person might have pain in their chest area. It could be caused by a cold, fluid build-up, or a blocked vein or artery. If your heart is not getting the blood and the oxygen that it needs to properly function, it can cause your chest to hurt. If you experience chest pain, your doctor will likely order an x-ray as well as other tests to determine what the cause of your pain might be. Overall, if you are suffering from chest pain you should not wait to be seen by a doctor.

""

4. Irregular Heartbeat

There are some people who have a heartbeat that is irregular. At times, this is just how their heart happens to beat and there is nothing of real concern. However, if you have ischemia of the heart and your heart is not beating normally, it could be cause for concern. Regular checkups are important as your doctor will listen to your heart and determine whether or not there might be an issue. If your doctor hears an irregular heartbeat they will order tests to be conducted in order to determine the underlying cause. An MRI of the chest might be done. A CT scan is another test that you will likely need to have in order to determine the cause of your irregular heartbeat. It is a good idea to feel your own heartbeat regularly and if you notice that there is something different about it, seek out medical attention.

""

5. Neck, Shoulder, Jaw, or Arm Pain

If your heart is not getting enough oxygen and blood, you might notice that your neck, arm, shoulder, or jaw begin to hurt. This pain is often accompanied by chest pain. If you have pain in your arm, neck, shoulder, or jaw that you cannot explain by an injury to one of these areas, it is a good idea to go to your doctor. If you also have chest pain, you should seek medical attention immediately. These are symptoms that can become quite dangerous very quickly as they are signs that your heart is not working properly and this can lead to heart failure or a heart attack. Ischemia can be quite dangerous, no matter what part of the body it occurs in. For this reason, it is important to make sure that you see your doctor regularly and note any type of symptoms that you might have that could be related to your blood not pumping through the body the way that it should.

""

6. Shortness of Breath

Another common symptom of ischemia is shortness of breath. If you have just completed an intense workout, it is common to be short of breath for a bit. However, this should only last for a short amount of time. If you are experiencing shortness of breath after exercise or even just after a short walk, it is a sign that there could be a problem in your body. You should be able to breathe deeply and slow down your breath without much of an issue. If you have ischemia, this exercise of deep breathing might end up being painful or even impossible. If you are short of breath and have some of the other symptoms on this list, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible as this could be a sign that there is something seriously wrong and you need help right away.

""

7. Nausea and Vomiting

Being sick to your stomach can be a sign of any number of health conditions. You could have simply eaten something that did not agree with you. The flu and other viruses can make you feel sick to your stomach. An upset stomach or vomiting can also be a sign of ischemia. This symptom might mean that you have a blockage near your heart or in your intestines. In fact, the ischemia could be located anywhere in your body and cause you to feel sick to your stomach. If you are feeling nauseous and vomiting, it is often not a big concern as you think you will feel better in a day or so. However, if you are sick to your stomach and have some of the other symptoms on this list, it could be a sign of ischemia and you will need to see your doctor in order to determine the underlying cause.

""

8. Exhaustion

Working too much, running around, and not getting enough sleep can all leave you feeling tired. However, most of the time a good night’s sleep will help you recover from being so busy and you will feel much better. If you are suffering from an illness such as ischemia, it can cause you to truly feel exhausted. No matter how much rest you get, you are still tired all of the time. Exhaustion like this could be caused by a number of different things. Your doctor might order blood work to determine the cause. It could be that you have a vitamin B deficiency, low iron, or low vitamin D. Deficiencies in important vitamins and nutrients such as these can cause you to feel tired all of the time. If you are experiencing exhaustion along with some other symptoms on this list, it is time to see your doctor and have some blood work done in order to determine the underlying cause.

""

9. Headaches

Once again, getting a headache is quite common. There is any number of reasons that you might get a headache. Typically, you will get a headache, take some medication and it will go away in a short amount of time. However, if you have ischemia of the brain, you might develop a headache that comes on extremely fast and hard. Oftentimes, a person suffering from ischemia will get a headache and also experience nausea and vomiting along with it. If you get an extreme headache that causes you to vomit, there is a good chance that there is something wrong. When your brain is not receiving enough blood, it can cause you to experience headaches like no other. You will want to make sure that you go to the emergency room to be checked out as this could be a sign of something dangerous.

""

10. Passing Out

If you pass out, there is something wrong. No one will just pass out when they are in good health. If you have passed out, you should make sure that you make an appointment with your doctor to find out the cause behind it. One of the symptoms of brain ischemia is passing out. The main reason for this is because the brain is not receiving the blood and the oxygen that it needs in order to function properly. There could be other underlying health issues that are causing you to pass out as well. Your doctor will likely order several tests in order to determine the underlying cause of this symptom. If it is determined that you have ischemia, surgery might be necessary in order to remove the blockage that is causing you these issues. Medications, diet, and exercise might also be ordered in order to alleviate some of the symptoms.

""

11. Inhibited Body Movement

You should be able to move your body freely. A person who is suffering from ischemia in the brain may suffer from the inability to move their arms, legs, and face. They might experience numbness in their body at first. Sometimes a person will feel numb on one side of their body. This numbness could go away only to return. At times, the numbness will not allow the person to move an entire side of their body. This is a sign that a person is having a stroke. Ischemia in the brain can cause strokes as the brain is not getting the oxygen and blood that it needs to support the function of the body. When this occurs, a part of the brain can end up damaged. A person might not ever regain function of one side of their body after having a stroke.

""

12. Slurred Speech

When ischemia is in the brain, it can cause a person to not be able to fully function. They may say that their brain feels foggy. In addition, when they start to speak their words might come out slurred. It might sound like they have been drinking too much alcohol. In addition to their speech is slurred, a person may start to have trouble understanding others. It can be difficult for them to focus and they might end up passing out. If you are with someone who starts slurring their speech and is having trouble understanding you, it is a sign that they might be having a stroke. It is important to make sure that you call 911 right away to get them the medical attention that they need. The sooner that treatment is started the better their chance of not having long-term issues as a result of the stroke.

""

13. Leg Pain

Some people develop ischemia in their legs. When this occurs they might not have any symptoms at all. However, many people who develop ischemia in their legs will have severe pain in the leg that has the issue. This pain might be accompanied by pain in the feet as well as weakness in the legs. The legs might also feel very cold. Another sign that a person has ischemia in their legs is that the skin on the legs will appear smooth and look shiny. If a person gets a sore on their leg, it may take a very long time to heal or possibly will not heal at all. Ischemia of the legs can become very dangerous and life-threatening if it is not dealt with properly. If a person does not receive proper medical treatment for leg ischemia, it could cause them to lose their leg.

""

14. Bloating and Extreme Belly Pain

When ischemia develops in the intestines it can cause a person to experience extreme bloating. This is typical because a hole develops in either the small or large intestine or both. When there is a hole in the intestine it can cause fluid to leak around the surrounding organs. This fluid will cause a person to feel bloated. The stomach area might become hard to touch and a person will simply feel full, even if they have not eaten anything in a long time. Ischemia in the intestines can also cause a person to experience extreme pain throughout the abdominal area. This pain can become very intense and may even feel like childbirth in women. Bloating and extreme belly pain can be a sign of ischemia or another underlying condition. Your doctor will run tests to determine the underlying cause so that proper treatment can begin.

""

15. Bloody Stool

Another sign that you might have ischemia in your intestines is blood in your stool. Having blood in your stool can be very disturbing. It can also be caused by a number of different health issues. Sometimes a person may notice blood in their poop as a result of hemorrhoid erupting. Colon issues can also cause a person to experience blood in their poop. If you notice that there is blood in your poop, it is important to go see your doctor right away. There are many dangerous health issues that can cause you to have blood in your poop and it is important to make sure that you find out the underlying cause so that treatment can be started as soon as possible. This is a sign of several types of cancers, so the sooner that it is found and treatment can be started the better.
