The term leukorrhea refers to a discharge from the vagina that is white or yellow in color, thick, sticky, and can be foul-smelling. This condition may be caused by unhygienic conditions, genital tract infections, impaired immunity, or a yeast infection.

Most women who suffer from this are embarrassed by it and avoid discussing it with their doctors. This is why treatment for leukorrhea can be a bit of an issue. However, this condition is not something to be embarrassed by because many women have it and some women also develop chronic yeast infections from it.

There are several things that can cause women to develop leukorrhea and it is not something to be embarrassed by. Most of the time a few changes can be made in order to rid the body of this type of discharge. Here are 8 common causes of leukorrhea in women.

1. Eating Unhealthy Foods

Diet plays an important role in not only your health overall, but it also can play a role in your havoc on the health of our vagina. The foods that you are eating could be the cause of your leukorrhea symptoms. Eating foods that are especially oily or spicy can cause you to develop leukorrhea.

In addition, the overindulgence of junk food can also be a cause of this smelly and thick discharge. If you are experiencing leukorrhea and you have been eating unhealthy foods for a bit, try tweaking your diet. Eating a healthier diet that is full of fruits and vegetables and low in fat, oil, and sugary foods, may help you get rid of the vaginal discharge that you are experiencing.

If you are still experiencing the symptoms of leukorrhea after making changes to your diet, it could be the sign of an infection and you should discuss your symptoms with your doctor.

2. Hormonal Imbalance

If you are experiencing a white or yellow discharge from the vagina and it is smelly, it could be because you have some type of hormonal imbalance. The hormones in the body are responsible for many different things and when the hormones become imbalanced it can cause all sorts of issues in the body.

When something is out of balance with your hormones it can cause excessive discharge from the vagina. If you are experiencing these symptoms and you cannot clear it up through diet or lifestyle changes it is important to discuss the symptoms with your doctor.

They can conduct tests to determine whether or not hormones may be the cause of the discharge that you are experiencing. 3. Sexual Activity

Sex can be a lot of fun and it can be healthy as well. However, overindulging in sexual activity may cause a woman to experience the symptoms of leukorrhea. When a woman overindulges in sex it may allow more bacteria to enter the vagina.

Oral sex provides a way for bacteria from the mouth to enter the vagina. When this occurs the woman may experience excessive discharge. Penetration from a penis can cause damage to the vagina as well. This damage may cause excessive discharge as well. The discharge may be a sign that something is wrong.

If it does not clear up on its own after a few days it is a good idea to talk to your doctor about the symptoms that you are experiencing. There are several sexually transmitted diseases that cause a woman to experience discharge and it is important to make sure that you are not suffering from one of them.

4. Vaginal Hygiene

The vagina is a very sensitive area and it needs to be well taken care of. Keeping it clean is extremely important. If you are not showering regularly and making sure to wipe it clean after going to the bathroom, you increase your chances of developing leukorrhea as well as other health issues such as vaginal yeast infections or urinary tract infections.

It is important to make sure that you always wipe from front to back as this can help keep bacteria from the anus from entering the vagina. It is also a good idea to try to urinate after having sexual intercourse. This can help clear out any bacteria that may have entered the vagina during sex.

Taking good care of the vagina by washing it regularly with a mild soap can go a long way when you are experiencing the symptoms of leukorrhea.

5. Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is the most common cause for women to experience vaginal discharge. When this occurs the healthy bacteria of the vagina are replaced with different kinds of bacteria. The reason why this may occur is not quite clear. The symptoms of this include a discharge that has somewhat of a fishy smell.

It typically will not cause soreness in the vaginal area or any itching. Treatment for bacterial vaginosis will typically include taking an oral antibiotic for at least a week. Using an antibiotic cream that is inserted into the vagina using an applicator may also be prescribed.

If you are given an oral antibiotic to clear up bacterial vaginosis you should avoid drinking alcohol until at least 24 hours after you take your last dose. Probiotics may also help to restore the balance of good bacteria in the vagina. Both vaginal and oral probiotics seem to help treat bacterial vaginosis.

6. Candida

A yeast infection or thrush is a common cause of leukorrhea. Nearly ¾ of women have experienced a yeast infection at some point and nearly half of these women will have two or more yeast infections in their lifetime. Symptoms of a yeast infection include a whitish discharge. This discharge typically does not have much of a smell.

Yeast infections also often cause pain during sex or urination, soreness, and itching. If a woman is experiencing a discharge caused by a yeast infection treatment will typically consist of using antifungal cream. These creams are inserted directly into the vagina.

These creams are available over the counter and come in different strengths. There are one, three, and five-day options. There are also several home remedies that a woman may want to try to clear up the yeast infection such as topical oils or probiotics.

7. Chlamydia

One of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the United States is chlamydia. Chlamydia is a bacteria that can be transmitted sexually. It is most common in both men and women who are under the age of 25. If chlamydia is left untreated in women it can cause ectopic pregnancy, infertility, and pelvic inflammatory disease.

One of the main issues with chlamydia is that it typically does not cause a person to experience any symptoms. If a person does have symptoms it is typically in the form of vaginal discharge, pain during intercourse, and bleeding between periods.

Fortunately, this is a sexually transmitted disease that can be treated. Treatment involves either a single dose of azithromycin or a seven-day dose of doxycycline. If you have been diagnosed with chlamydia it is recommended that you are retested 3 months after treatment. Any sexual partners of yours should be tested and treated for it as well.

8. Normal Discharge

It is quite normal for a woman to experience a vaginal discharge. Typically, a normal discharge from the vagina will be white or clear in color and not have much of a smell. This type of discharge is referred to as a physiological discharge. Physiological discharges generally will occur around a women’s menstrual cycle.

Some women may experience a discharge before their period starts and some women experience a discharge right after their period ends. Some women do not have this type of discharge at all. When it comes to vaginal discharge there is typically no reason to be concerned unless it is causing you to experience other symptoms as well.

When the discharge is accompanied by aches and pains, a burning or itching sensation, or other symptoms, it is important to have it checked out by your doctor to rule out any other possible health issues that may be causing it to occur.
