""

Babesia is a common disease that shares some parallels with Lyme disease, and the health department of the state of Minnesota reported that there were an estimated 59 confirmed cases of Babesia that occurred in just this state during the year 2017 – this was a significant increase from the previous year, and it raises the question of just how common Babesia has become, and just how big your risk might be of contracting it.

Exposure to the carrier tick itself makes for the largest risk factor, although you can be exposed to the tick through many more ways than just the most common one of being exposed to the tick through working with cattle – in fact, you don’t even have to spend much time in the outdoors to be considered at risk of picking up Babesia.

If you do, being able to spot the symptoms becomes integral to your survival, and you should seek medical attention if you spot any of the following 8 common symptoms of Babesia.

1. Fever

The normal human body temperature for a healthy person measures at about 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (or somewhere around there), and any temperature that measures higher than this for a period lasting longer than a few hours can be considered the type of fever that warrants a medical emergency.

A fever is a natural response the body has to any kind of infection that might try to enter the body, and it attempts to make the environment inhabitable for the parasite, virus, or infection – but it also takes its toll on the body, and a fever should be treated not just as a symptom of something like Babesia, but as an entire condition on its own that requires immediate treatment.

Treat a fever immediately, and seek medical attention as soon as possible: Running a fever for too long can put your body and heart under too much strain, and it could prove to be fatal.

""

2. Muscle Pain

Muscle pain is common when you have just finished exercising, and in this case, it isn’t considered a symptom as much as a normal consequence of exercise – but if your muscle pain feels too severe for the circumstances or goes hand in hand with a fever (or any of the other symptoms mentioned on this list), then you should consider making an appointment with your doctor or going to the emergency room depending on the severity of your symptoms.

The muscle pain associated with Babesia can be severe, and may or may not be accompanied by fever; it can sometimes occur in bouts, but more often occurs for as long as the infection lasts, and it can have disastrous consequences on the rest of your body.

The best thing to do in the case of muscle pain is to apply (slight) heat and massage – and treat the infection itself.

""

3. Headache

A headache is usually a symptom of muscle strain (usually in the neck, shoulders, or jaw, in which case it’s referred to as a tension headache) or a symptom of something more serious – such as a migraine, high blood pressure, severe dehydration or added strain on the heart and circulatory system.

The type of headache that you would most commonly experience with a Babesia infection would happen with many of the other symptoms that are mentioned on this list, and this is because of the effect that the infection has on your blood pressure and circulation – which can make it dangerous if you already suffer from any kind of heart condition already.

The headache should be treated symptomatically, but when diagnosed with Babesia, it becomes more important for the condition itself to be treated as soon as possible to take care of the symptoms and to reduce the risk of any permanent damage to your health.

""

4. Sweats

Excessive sweating is a symptom that can often accompany a fever, but isn’t always known to; it’s one of the quickest possible ways in which the body can become dehydrated when you are battling an infection such as Babesia, and it’s as much a symptom of the disease as it is your body’s way of trying to force the infection out with excessive sweating and fever.

It’s common to wake up with soaked sheets and night sweats if you’re battling a bout of Babesia, and it can turn the condition instantly deadly if you were to wait for the condition to go away on its own. This symptom when combined with any of the other symptoms on this list should be taken as potential signs of Babesia, and should warrant immediate medical attention to bring the infection under control as soon as possible. For this, natural treatments aren’t enough.

""

5. Loss of Appetite

A sudden loss of appetite should always count as a very serious symptom, and it almost always means that your body is trying to tell you something – and especially when it can be combined with many of the symptoms that appear on this list, it could be a sign of a very severe infection within the body – and something that needs to be seen to by a doctor immediately before the infection is allowed to get any worse.

Loss of appetite happens due to the infection spreading around in the body, and it might be accompanied by some of the other digestive symptoms of Babesia, including nausea and vomiting. Watch your diet carefully, and remember to take in fluids to keep the body hydrated; Babesia can be treated, but only if the condition gets adequate medical treatment soon enough in the process for it to be effective and really work.

""

6. Nausea and Vomiting

Babesia is characterized by a range of different symptoms that can affect the immune system, and nausea and vomiting are usually one of the most common (and first) symptoms that you will show if you have been infected with any of the parasites that happen to cause Babesia. Nausea and vomiting might go hand-in-hand with some of the other symptoms on this list (like a fever), or it can happen entirely on its own.

It’s one of the more dangerous symptoms that accompanies Babesia, and it can be one of the symptoms that turn the disease fatal – especially if it’s left untreated for too long without adequate medical attention, which can lead to dehydration and an increased risk of strokes or heart attacks.

Vomiting and nausea should be treated symptomatically for relief, but only medical attention at the right time can treat the actual medical condition that’s causing it.

""

7. Constant Fatigue

Fatigue that doesn’t go away, usually even if you’re getting enough sleep, will almost always signify that there’s something wrong with your health – and you should make an appointment with your doctor if you have been feeling fatigued or more tired than usual, even if you aren’t showing any of the associated symptoms of Babesia that appears on this list.

Fatigue is never a good thing, and even when it’s not Babesia, it’s something that has to be brought under control if you want to continue to live a healthy and happy life: In most cases, it will only take a few small lifestyle changes to make the feeling of constant fatigue go away entirely.

When you are able to combine it with several of the different symptoms on this list, take constant fatigue as one of the potential signs for Babesia and make an appointment with your doctor immediately.

""

8. A Lowered Immune System

A lowered immune system is one of the most common symptoms that accompany most types of infections, and the same is true for Babesia; it’s a symptom that might occur before or after the infection, and it might even be a symptom that occurs because of something else that just happens to put you at an increased risk of developing Babesia.

What you should know about your immune system is the fact that it functions as the firewall for your body, and it keeps (most) undesirable things away. Babesia can often give your immune system such a knock that you’re in bad health for days to weeks after you’ve recovered from the initial bout of Babesia – and it’s usually up to healthy living and monitoring of your lifestyle to keep your immune system in good condition and recover from the infection as soon as you can.

Make regular appointments with your doctor, especially during post-recovery from Babesia or similar conditions.

""

9. Chills

As mentioned, it’s common for people infected with Babesia to develop a fever. However, some people might notice that they experience chills alongside the change in body temperature. When the brain senses infection, it signals the hypothalamus to ramp up the immune response. One of the immune system’s first actions to fight off the disease is to turn up your body heat.

The immune system achieves this action by producing pyrogen proteins that dock with receptors in the central nervous system in the lower lumbar spine. These pyrogens tell the body to increase its natural temperature set point. As the body complies, it takes time for the temperature to reach the new setpoint.

During the lag, the body feels cold, resulting in the development of chills. The infected individual will feel cold, even if they sit by a fire or cover themselves in blankets. When the baseline temperature catches up to the new setpoint, the infected individual feels relief from the chills but has to contend with the effects of a fever.

""

10. Malaise

When we don’t know what is wrong with us, it starts to cause anxiety in the affected person. Since Babesia typically occurs through a tick bite, it’s possible that the person never saw the tick, and it dropped off them before they saw the parasite on their skin. As a result, the patient may start to notice the onset of the condition, along with Lyme Disease symptoms, if the tick was carrying that bacterial pathogen as well.

At first, the symptoms might feel like a mild case of the flu; however, if the patient doesn’t receive treatment, the symptoms progress. When we know that something is wrong with us, but we don’t have a medical diagnosis, it leads to the development of stress and anxiety and a condition known as malaise.

Malaise will continue in the affected individual and progress into SAD in some infected people with neurotic personalities. The malaise lifts as soon as the patient gets a diagnosis from their doctor.

""

11. Dark Urine

People who are dealing with babesia infection may experience changes in urine color as the condition worsens. The parasite interferes with normal organ function, and the most common organ experiencing complications of Babesia infection is the kidneys. The kidneys have the task of filtering blood and producing urine.

Typically, when you’re well-hydrated, the color of your urine is clear to light yellow. When you start seeing darker-colored urine, it’s because dehydration is setting in. While most people can just drink water to rehydrate, people with Babesia infection might not see the same relief.

As the condition progresses, it places further strain on the kidneys. Your urine may start to go very dark, and that’s a sign that the kidneys are in trouble. Dark urine is a sign that the kidneys leak proteins into your urine and blood as they break down. This situation is a medical emergency, and the infected individual must visit the hospital for treatment right away.

""

12. Cough and Sore Throat

One of the more common signs of Babesia is a sore throat and cough. These respiratory and throat symptoms appear in the mid-stage of the infection with Lyme Disease of Babesia. It’s common for the tick carrying the babesia parasite also to host the Lyme Disease bacteria responsible for causing the condition.

Both Lyme Disease and Babesia can cause respiratory distress in the infected individual. When you visit your doctor, they’ll take a blood test to examine the cause of the problem. The blood test will immediately show your physician the problem.

Since respiratory symptoms could be due to anything from a common cold to advanced lung problems, your doctor needs to be thorough about their examination. The physician may require two or three rounds of blood tests before identifying the problem, especially if you don’t remember being bitten by a tick. However, your doctor will eventually figure it out and treat you for the infection.

""

13. Photo-Phobia

Photophobia describes a medical condition where people are light-sensitive and afraid of exposure to direct lighting. Some individuals with photophobia may experience pain in the eyes when they are outside in direct sunlight. People living with photophobia are not afraid of light; they are overly sensitive to its effect on their eyes and brains.

People with photophobia typically have an underlying problem causing the condition. Light sensitivity also presents symptoms like dry eyes, headaches, migraines, and ocular swelling. Most individuals with photophobia need to wear dark glasses when outdoors in direct sunlight. They also find themselves blinking more when looking directly at a bright screen.

Photophobia occurs when the link between the eyes and the nerve stem reaching to the brain. The effects of Babesia can cause photophobia in infected individuals. These symptoms typically appear in the advanced stages of infection if the patient doesn’t receive early treatment for their condition.

""

14. Depression

Depression affects more than 9% of the adult American population. Stress and Anxiety Disorder (SAD) affects more than 15-million American adults. Depression is causing a mental health crisis in America, and medical professionals are concerned about the growing rate of suicide, especially in the nation’s youth. Depression is a preventable and treatable disorder, and it has many causes.

People who experience an infection with the Babesia parasite and don’t receive treatment for the parasite are at risk of developing long-haul symptoms associated with Lyme Disease and other tick-borne diseases. Depression is a common long-haul system related to Lyme Disease and possible Babesia infection. The disease affects every biological system in the body, including the hormonal system.

As a result, people with long-haul babesia symptoms may find they experience heightened levels of anxiety and depression in their life. Those individuals that already have issues with depression before infection may see a worsening in their symptoms. Doctors may find it challenging to locate the cause of your depression, and they’ll look for other signs accompanying the problem to make their diagnosis.

""

15. Jaundice

When the effects of Babesia start to cause severe complications with the body, the infected individual may begin to experience liver distress. The liver is the body’s primary filter, absorbing toxins and excreting them to keep the body healthy. When the liver experiences distress, it has problems regulating bilirubin, a substance produced in the liver responsible for aiding digestion.

As a result, the individual infected with Babesia starts to notice their skin turn yellowish. The effect also spreads to the whites of the eyes, turning them yellow. People with Jaundice symptoms require immediate medical attention to treat the liver. Delaying diagnosis and treatment could cause life-threatening complications as the liver shuts down.

Doctors treat the patient with antibiotics to stop the infection and anti-parasitic medications, killing the babesia parasite. Most patients respond to the treatment almost immediately, and they clear the disease in 48 to 72-hours. Provided the patient receives prompt treatment, they should make a full recovery from the effects of jaundice.
