Stomach cancer is notorious for being one of the most painful types of cancer. However, for many people, pain is not one of the early warning signs of the disease. In fact, most commonly during the early stages of the disease, a person will have no symptoms at all.

Everyone has a stomach ache every now and again, which is one of the reasons that many people do not really worry about stomach cancer. Stomach cancer is the most common among men and the risk for the disease goes up as a person ages. At some point in their lifetime, one out of every 111 adults will develop stomach cancer.

This type of cancer is not typically inherited and most gastric types of cancer area actually sporadic or caused by a random mutation of the DNA. Here are some of the more common stomach cancer symptoms to be aware of.

1. Blood in Vomit or Stool

Finding blood in your stool can be quite alarming. This is typically a sign that there is something not right going on inside of you. However, simply finding blood in your stool or vomit does not mean that you have stomach cancer. While it is a sign that you could have stomach cancer, finding blood in your vomit or stool is also a sign of several other illnesses and diseases such as Crohn’s disease or colitis.

If you find blood in either your vomit or your poop, you need to make sure that you go to a gastrointestinal doctor right away. If the blood is related to any form of cancer it will most often look tarry black or maroon in color when it is found in the stool.

The reason for this is because of how the digestive enzymes have reacted to it. If there is blood in your vomit it will typically be bright red in color.

2. No Appetite

A person who is suffering from stomach cancer is similar to patients who suffer from other types of cancers. In that, these people will likely experience a loss of appetite. These individuals simply do not have a desire to eat, even foods that were once enjoyable to them.

The reason for this could be caused by the metabolic changes that are caused by cancer. Some of the other factors that may contribute to the loss of appetite include weakness, pain, fatigue, and depression. Individuals who are suffering from thyroid cancer may feel sick to their stomachs all the time.

They may also feel full all of the time because of the growth of the cancerous cells. The constant feeling of being full will cause a person to not feel like eating. As cancer continues to grow and spread, a person may simply not ever feel hungry.

3. Pain on the Inside

In some cases, if a person is suffering from stomach cancer they will experience pain in their stomachs. However, most of the time the pain in the stomach is caused by some other type of abdominal or gut ailment and not by cancer.

One thing that makes the pain that is caused by stomach cancer different is that the pain is gnawing and quite persistent. The pain is not something that is felt for a day and then goes away for a couple of weeks and then comes back. When a person has developed stomach cancer the pain will come and it will stay.

It is quite common for the pain felt to be located in the center of the stomach and to feel like a dull ache that will not go away no matter what the person does. If you have a persistent pain in the center of your stomach, make sure to discuss it with your doctor.

4. Unexplained Weight Loss

Another common symptom of any patient that has been diagnosed with cancer is weight loss. It is obvious that a loss of appetite, which is another sign of cancer, can lead to a person losing weight. After all, a person who does not have an appetite is not going to eat as much and when you are not eating as much you are more likely to lose weight.

In fact, almost 40 percent of patients who are diagnosed with cancer have reported that one of the first symptoms that they noticed was an unexplained weight loss when they were first diagnosed. For those who have more advanced stages of cancer unexpected weight loss occurs in nearly 80 percent.

For those who have an advanced stage of thyroid cancer cachexia may occur. This refers to several symptoms such as fatigue, weight loss, muscle atrophy, and a loss of appetite.

5. Heartburn

It is quite common for a person to experience heartburn every now and again. In fact, heartburn and indigestion are common symptoms that a person may experience from time to time. So much so that most people do not think much about it when it does occur.

However, when a person has stomach cancer they may develop heartburn that simply will not go away no matter what they do. Indigestion, heartburn and other common symptoms that the gut is not right can be early warning signs of stomach cancer. Most of the time, these symptoms are the result of something other than stomach cancer.

However, they are a warning symptom that something is definitely wrong in the digestive tract and for this reason, it is important to let your doctor know if you experience heartburn and indigestion often so that they can rule out stomach cancer and determine the underlying cause of your discomfort.

6. Constipation or Diarrhea

When it comes to cancer that develops in the stomach it really makes sense that it could have an effect on your bowel movements. The problem with symptoms such as diarrhea and constipation is that they are quite common ailments and most people simply write the symptoms off as the norm.

However, when a person has developed stomach cancer it can cause a blockage to occur. This blockage could cause a person to become constipated as a stool cannot get past it. It may also cause a person to have diarrhea as the bowels will look for any way possible to empty the waste.

This may be in the form of stools that are watery and come out often. When a person has stomach cancer they may go back and forth from being constipated to having diarrhea. Anyone that suffers from these ailments consistently and regularly should discuss the issue with their doctor to find out what the underlying cause may be.

""

7. Bloating

Almost everyone at some point in time will feel bloated. This feeling often occurs after eating a big meal. Women may experience bloating when they are on their menstrual cycle. When a person feels bloated, their stomach feels enlarged. They may feel extremely full and it may hurt to put any pressure on the abdominal area.

Once again, bloating is quite common and not something that many people put a lot of thought into when they are experiencing this symptom. They may feel uncomfortable from the bloated sensation, but easily write it off. Unfortunately, bloating is another typical symptom that is experienced by those who have stomach cancer.

Bloating can be an early warning sign that something is wrong within the stomach. If you are experiencing bloating along with some of the other symptoms on this list, it is important to discuss it with your doctor in order to determine the exact cause.

""

8. No Symptoms at All

The early stages of stomach cancer will rarely cause any type of symptom at all. Most people do not realize that they have stomach cancer until it has advanced to a later stage. This is one of the reasons that it is so difficult to detect early.

In fact, only about one out of every five diagnoses of stomach cancer occurs during an early stage. Most of the symptoms of stomach cancer are likely to be caused by something other than cancer, such as an ulcer or a stomach virus. The symptoms may also occur if the person has another type of cancer.

However, individuals who have any of the issues on this list, especially if the symptoms become worse or do not go away, should report the symptoms to their doctor so that the underlying cause can be found and appropriate treatment can be completed.

""

9. Vomiting

Vomiting with blood is something that we have already discussed as being related to stomach cancer. What you may not realize though, is that vomiting, in general, can also point to the problem.

The reason for this is that the stomach is not functioning normally, and this then can cause it to empty its contents. Remember, when you suffer from stomach cancer, what is effective happening, is that the cells that make up your stomach are gradually no longer functioning correctly and are beginning to die. Thus the stomach can do all kinds of strange things, as it gradually loses its function.

The other thing to remember is that the body will sometimes vomit simply as a way to treat what it sees as an unknown problem. If you start feeling unwell, then your body may assume that the problem is related to something you’ve eaten. As such, it can attempt to drive out the contents in order to evict a nasty toxin or bacteria.

""

10. Nausea

This is also why you will experience nausea – as a result of your body trying to drive out what it sees as a potential invader, and because your stomach won’t be behaving normally. The result is that you can feel sick and that you might struggle in particular when eating. Alternatively, you might find yourself feeling very hungry, but then feeling sick and unwell as soon as you eat anything.

It is important that you do keep eating, even if you experience nausea. To address this problem, you can try eating more slowly, and sticking to the dryer, smaller portions. Another tip is to drink plenty of water, which will help to keep you hydrated and will dilute any angry stomach acids.

Note as well that nausea is also a side effect of chemotherapy, which is one of the most common treatments used for all forms of cancer.

""

11. Lethargy

Stomach cancer might specifically be a problem that affects the stomach, but it actually has repercussions all throughout the body. Your body knows something is wrong, and your immune system will, therefore, go into overdrive as it attempts to find the source of the problem and kill off the offending cells.

The issue is that this means that all of your energy is going to be directed toward your immune system, and you are going to be producing pro-inflammatory cytokines. These can leave you feeling tired and lethargic, not to mention causing brain fog and making it hard for you to think straight. The result is that you might struggle to get out of bed in the mornings, or you might just feel sluggish and tired.

Of course, tiredness does not always point to cancer, and this can be a symptom of many other things including psychological issues. But in general, if you feel extremely tired and you’re unsure why then you should always get it looked into.

""

12. Swelling

Swelling is another symptom associated with cancer that is caused by your immune system going into overdrive. What is happening here is that you are producing molecules called pro-inflammatory cytokines and these are causing swelling in the affected area. The objective is to try and make that part of your body less hospitable for germs and for offending cancerous cells.

Unfortunately, though, the side effect of this is that it can cause you to feel extremely tired and it can cause inflammation throughout your entire body. This is why we get brain fog when we are unwell, and it’s why you might feel additional discomfort. If you notice some swelling or bloating in your stomach (which has slightly different causes), then this is a sign that something is not right, and it is your job to find out what.

""

13. Breathlessness

When you suffer from stomach cancer, this will actually inhibit blood flow and affect the entire area. This then means that you won’t get as much blood flow to key organs, to the brain, or to the muscles. You might, therefore, experience breathlessness and tiredness when engaging in moderate activity. In fact, you might even find that you get out of breath when not being active at all.

The precise explanation is that you aren’t getting the nutrients that you need and in this case, it is iron that is lacking. Iron is used in the formation of red blood cells (hemoglobin) and therefore prevents you from getting as much oxygen around your body. Stomach cancer causes this condition which is called ‘anemia’, though it can also have a number of other potential causes.

""

14. Malabsorption

The reason for that anemia, in this case, is that stomach cancer is preventing you from being able to absorb nutrients properly. Specifically, the damaged function of the stomach means that it isn’t able to properly break down foods and then absorb the nutrients into the blood. This means that over time, you will find that your key nutrients are depleted, and this going to have a number of knock-on effects on your health.

Anemia is one of these as we have seen. But as you fail to get enough amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, you might also find yourself becoming ill more easily, noticing that your hair, skin, nails, and teeth don’t look as healthy and vibrant, and generally feeling a lot worse without really being able to explain why.

This can also be a sign of other conditions, however, such as gluten intolerance.
