Nausea is one sensation that many people have experienced. While other sensations may be hated by most but enjoyed by some, such as chaos and adrenaline rushes, nausea is one case where everyone can agree that it absolutely sucks. Various things can cause nausea.

These include travel, pregnancy, and even disease. Most people just gravitate towards anti-nausea medications as soon as they feel even the slightest bit queasy, but reliance on pills is never a good idea. Not to mention the fact that pill-popping can bring various side effects, and may not be an option for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Other side effects could include drowsiness, fatigue, degradation of motor skills, and in some severe cases pharmaceutical overdose. Why would you turn to pills whenever nausea strikes when you can just use one of many home remedies for the same results? Today we’re going to show you eight home remedies that offer the same results without all the side effects.

1. Eat Ginger

Ginger is a common remedy that people have used to deal with their nausea. No one knows just how it works, but some have suggested the possibility that the compounds contained within the ginger hold identical properties to that of various anti-nausea medications.

There have been countless studies all coming to the same conclusion that ginger is, in fact, a genuine and very effective way to alleviate or cure nausea and its various triggers. Ginger has also been the go-to method of treating nausea that is caused by pregnancy. This is because it is great at treating this type of nausea, and also because taking anti-nausea pills while pregnant is generally a bad idea.

Furthermore, cancer patients could also use ginger to alleviate the symptoms that they feel after receiving chemotherapy. Some studies how found that ginger is equally effective to various prescription medications but treat your nausea without causing a new set of side effects.

2. Peppermint Aromatherapy

Peppermint aromatherapy could also reduce the severity of your nausea. One particular study found that it is a great way to reduce nausea for women who have just had a C-section. People who are exposed to peppermint will experience less severe nausea than those who are just breathing in regular air, as was revealed by a study.

The same study also showed that the severity of nausea was lower in those who received peppermint aromatherapy versus those who took standard anti-nausea medications. Another study showed that peppermint aromatherapy was able to reduce nausea in 57% of the participants. Some studies have also focused on using inhalers with peppermint oil to reduce nausea.

The general results where that, after two minutes of inhaling the peppermint, the nausea was reduced by 44% of the participants. There are also anecdotal reports of peppermint tea reducing nausea, though there has been limited scientific research into this claim.

3. Try Acupuncture or Acupressure

Acupressure and acupuncture are two common remedies in Chinese culture that has historically been used to treat both vomiting and nausea. Acupuncture describes the process of inserting needles into specific pressure points all around your body.

Acupressure is a process virtually identical to acupuncture, except for the fact that the hands and fingers are used to stimulate these pressure points rather than fine needles. Regardless of which technique is used, the nerve fibers will be stimulated and signals to your spinal cord and brain — signals which have proven effective at reducing the severity of your nausea and sometimes even curing it outright.

Two relatively recent studies showed that acupressure and acupuncture severely lowered the chances of suffering nausea following operations. The reduction rate was anywhere between 28% and 75%. Studies have also shown that both acupuncture and acupressure have displayed results equal to that of anti-nausea medications but without producing any of the side effects.

4. Slice a Lemon

Slicing lemons is another way to deal with nausea. The citrus scent of freshly sliced lemons can reduce nausea, specifically for pregnant women. One study took a hundred pregnant women and had them inhale lemon essential oils as soon as their nausea started to manifest.

After four days of studying the participants, researches were pleased to see that the participants saw a 9% lower rate of nausea to the placebo group. Scratching or slicing a lemon works because it is an effective way of releasing the essential oils contained within. You could even take the essential oils of the lemon and place it into a vial to provide portability.

There have been various studies showing that the smell of citrus can be effective in reducing nausea, especially nausea that is caused by pregnancy. Using a coffee grinder to grind up some lemon peels could also help relieve nausea as the scent of the citrus will be released into the air.

5. Control Your Breathing

It may sound silly, but breathing in a controlled manner could reduce your nausea. One study was researching various scents used for aromatherapy to try and determine which one was most at reducing nausea in the participants. What surprised the scientists is that even the placebo group saw a significant reduction in both the frequency and severity of nausea that their participants reported.

This led them to believe that it might have been the actual breathing in the substances that helped reduce nausea rather than the substances themselves. In response to these findings, another study was launched to see whether breathing alone could effectively reduce or cure nausea.

The results confirmed the suspicions of the previous study and reported that even without aromatherapy, controlled breathing is able to relieve nausea. The group that used controlled breathing to reduce their nausea reported a 62% reduction — impressive considering the fact that no aromatherapy scents were used.

6. Use Certain Spices

There are various spices that have been used as home remedies to fight nausea. Most of the reports are anecdotal in nature rather than scientifically-backed, but there are three spices that have had their claims supported by solid research. The spices are cumin, cinnamon, and fennel powder.

Fennel powder was found to reduce multiple symptoms of menstruation, which includes nausea. It also appeared to shorten the length of the period and thus nausea as well. Cinnamon was able to further reduce the severity that those menstruating felt when dealing with nausea. Cumin was able to treat the symptoms caused by irritable bowel syndrome which included diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and of course, nausea.

It’s important to remember that these three spices may have studies backing their claims, but the research is far too young to make any conclusive statements on whether or not they are truly effective at treating nausea.

""

7. Try Relaxing Your Muscles

Relaxing your muscles could actually reduce the severity of your nausea or even relieve it altogether. Progressive muscle relaxation, or PMR, is one technique that has shown promise in treating nausea. The technique involves the alternating relaxing and tensing of the muscles.

One specific study found that PMR was effective in treating nausea caused by chemotherapy. Massaging could also relieve tension in the muscles and thus treat nausea. One study took a group of patients that have all recently undergone chemotherapy and gave them a 20-minute massage at their lower legs and lower arms.

In comparison to the group that didn’t receive a message, the participants noticed a 24% reduction in the frequency of their nausea following the massage. Whether you use PMR or massages, it’s clear that relaxing your muscles can be an effective way to reduce nausea. That being the case, taking a dip in your hot tub could help with nausea as well, though there hasn’t been enough research on the concept to make any conclusive statements.

""

8. Take a Vitamin B6 Supplement

In recent years doctors have become increasingly interested in the concept of treating pregnant women using vitamin B6 so that they can reduce their nausea without resorting to anti-nausea medications which could cause complications in their pregnancy.

Multiple studies have reported that taking supplements of pyridoxine, better known as vitamin B6, can help reduce nausea throughout the term of the pregnancy provided these supplements were taken on a regular basis.

As a result of this discovery, there have been more and more physicians suggesting that pregnant women take regular supplements or vitamin B6, or at least multivitamins so that they don’t have to deal with regular nausea throughout the duration of their pregnancy. Dosages up to 200 milligrams each day are safe for women, even those who are pregnant, and won’t cause any side effects.

Even those who aren’t pregnant might want to consider this alternative to anti-nausea medications as it could yield the same results but without all the adverse side effects that pills may cause.

""

9. Breathe Deeply and Lie Down

Sometimes the most straightforward solutions have the best effects of getting rid of your morning sickness. When you start to feel sick and nauseous – lie down. Lying down reduces the blood pressure necessary to push oxygenated blood around your body.

This reduction in blood pressure should reduce your nausea symptoms and help you gather yourself before standing again. Another excellent way to eliminate feelings of nausea – is by taking a few deep breaths. Most of the time, we’re using less than a fifth of our lung’s capacity for breathing. Take a deep breath and fill your lungs with air, and you’ll notice how much your lungs can expand and how little of them you use with normal breathing.

Deep breathing drives more oxygen into your blood, reducing symptoms of nausea. Try wearing a sleep mask and lying down on the couch for a few minutes. Take ten deep breaths and control your exhalation to half the speed of inhalation.

10. Consider Medication

Most expectant mothers will gain relief from symptoms of morning sickness using natural remedies. However, these remedies are not a sure-fire cure for everyone. Some people may find that their symptoms of nausea, cramping, and pain are so intense, that they can’t gain relief, no matter what remedy they try.

When OTC remedies like Vitamin B6 and Unisom fail, it’s time to turn to medical science for the help you need. Make an appointment with your doctor for a consultation and describe your symptoms to them. Depending on your situation, your doctor may prescribe anti-nausea drugs, such as promethazine, scopolamine, and trimethobenzamide to help you gain relief from symptoms associated with your morning sickness.

Your physician may also combine your medications to treat many symptoms of reflux as well. Reflux blockers like Protonix work well in stopping acid reflux from entering your esophagus. Never take any pharmaceutical drugs without checking with your doctor first.

11. Stay Away from the Screen

Expectant mothers need their sleep. Unfortunately, in a digital age, we seem to be continuously attached to the screens of our smart devices. Playing around on your phone before bed throws off your circadian rhythm, the body’s natural understanding of when the sun rises and sets. This effect on the circadian rhythm occurs due to the intense white light emanating from the screen of the device. If you view your phone, tablet or laptop before bedtime, you’ll struggle to fall asleep.

Cut screen time 2-hours before bedtime to ensure you get a peaceful night’s sleep. Sleep matters a great deal for pregnant women. It’s the time of day when the body repairs itself and restores its energy levels. Failing to get enough rest will leave you feeling like a physical and emotional mess, and increases the chances of developing morning sickness when you wake up. Give yourself a break and put down the phone in the evening.

""

12. Find Agreeable Foods

Your diet plays a significant role in the development of morning sickness symptoms. When women get pregnant, the body releases a flood of hormones that results in changes to a variety of biological systems in the body. One of the more noticeable symptoms of an elevated hormone profile – is an aversion to food that you previously enjoyed, as well as cravings for foods you dislike.

As a result, many women end up eating anything they can find, regardless of whether or not it’s good for their health and that of their baby. However, this condition affects every person differently, and what one person may find delicious, another may find disgusting. Experiment with healthy foods that you enjoy and try to avoid the cravings for sweet and sugary foods.

Eating plenty of sugar and saturated fat wreaks havoc on your digestive system, increasing symptoms of nausea. It’s important to eat, even if you’re feeling sick. If you’re having a hard time keeping things down, try chicken soup – it’s nutritious and hydrating.

""

13. Avoid Strong Odors

Along with aversion to foods, comes aversion to strong smells as well. Pregnant women often experience a heightened sense of smell. Some scents may initiate symptoms of nausea and morning sickness. Some of the more common odors women should try to avoid when pregnant include; burnt toast, cigarette smoke, petrol fumes, as well as other burning or hydrocarbon-based odors.

If you find that you’re feeling nauseous, you can sniff a fresh scent to reduce symptoms of morning sickness. Try smelling a fresh-chopped lemon or some wheatgrass to calm your nausea and stop your tummy from convulsing. While you can’t walk around with a chopped lemon in your bag, you can buy some essential oil for such an emergency.

These changes to the senses occur due to an elevation in estrogen and progesterone production, the two hormones responsible for fetal development. Production of these two hormones begins to decline in the second trimester, and you’ll notice your heightened sensory awareness return to normal.

""

14. Stay Hydrated

Our last remedy may sound like common sense, but it’s surprising how many pregnant mothers fail to stay adequately hydrated during the waking hours of the day. Drinking enough water is critical for your health and that of your baby. When we’re dehydrated, the body struggles to perform essential bodily functions, and as a result, you may notice the onset of nausea and morning sickness.

Always ensure that you drink at least 8-glasses of water each day to maintain hydration levels. It’s just as critical to examine your water source as well. Many American cities and neighborhoods do not have a potable drinking water supply. As a result, you’ll need to drink bottled water or set up a reverse osmosis system in your home to filter your water.

Reverse osmosis systems remove up to 99.9-percent of all particles, hormones, toxins, and chemicals from drinking water, while Remineralizing the water with calcium and increasing the alkalinity of the water.
