Adenocarcinoma is the official term used to describe a type of cancer that manifests within the glands of your body. Your glands are the cells that release substances in your body. The survival rate, treatment, and outlook of adenocarcinoma are dependent on the stage, size, and location of the tumor, as well as other factors such as existing medical conditions.

Adenocarcinomas start out in the glands but can spread out to other areas of your body if left untreated. Your glands release various types of fluids into the tissue that lines most of the organs in your body. The diagnostic process often starts with a review of the medical history of the patient.

Your doctor will likely ask you multiple questions regarding the symptoms you’re experiencing as well as the potential risk factors that could play a role in your condition. After the interview process, your doctor will run the tests necessary to diagnose your illness.

1. Colon cancer

The large intestine, more often referred to as the colon, is a portion of your digestive system that consists of a lengthy tube. This tube removes the nutrients and water from the food you eat so that it can be absorbed into your body and used wherever appropriate. Adenocarcinoma is the most prominent form of colon cancer.

It will start its life as a small growth — sometimes called a polyp. These growths are often harmless initially but then become cancerous later on. It sometimes also starts life in your rectum. This is the portion of your large intestine that ejects the stool — a nice way of saying digested food and human waste.

If your colon cancer starts in the rectum, it will be easier to detect as you will likely feel constant pain, especially during bowel movements. If you notice unusual pain while releasing stool from your body, it would be worthwhile to run a few tests to see if you’re actually suffering from the early stages of colon cancer.

2. Breast cancer

Most cases of breast cancer are adenocarcinomas. This is due to the fact that the breastmilk-producing glands in your breast are especially prone to adenocarcinomas — seeing as it targets glands. This poses a risk not only to you but to any nursing infants as well. While there has been a relatively limited study in this area, some researchers have suggested that cancer might spread to your babies through the breastmilk if adenocarcinoma is present in your glands during the time of feeding. Thus, if you suspect that you have adenocarcinoma, you should get yourself checked up to confirm the diagnosis before you cause more harm to yourself and your children.

Some studies have also shown that excessive or insufficient production of breastmilk could result from adenocarcinoma. This is due to the fact that the glands are unable to regulate the level of breastmilk that they produce if they are weakened by the adenocarcinoma.

3. Esophageal cancer

The esophagus is the tube that transports the food you eat to your stomach. It makes a long journey from the stomach to the mouth, which is why the esophagus is such an important part of your body. When adenocarcinoma starts to manifest as esophageal cancer, it will begin its rampage within the mucous glands that line the lower area of your esophagus.

Some of the early symptoms of this form of adenocarcinoma will be difficulty swallowing, frequent choking, and heartburn. If you notice one or more of these symptoms, it might be due to adenocarcinoma developing in the lower area of your esophagus.

Many people shrug off these symptoms and think that it is merely due to improper chewing of their food, but they could very well be the result of underlying conditions that require immediate treatment. In the later stages of cancer, it might become impossible to eat solid food and the patient may need to rely on dextrose for nutrition.

4. Lung cancer

Around 40% of lung cancers are adenocarcinoma. Cases of lung cancer that aren’t adenocarcinoma often manifest within the lungs and progress rapidly. In contrast, adenocarcinoma cases of lung cancer usually start outside the lungs and progress at a slower rate.

Thus, adenocarcinoma can be easier to treat in some cases in comparison to other types of lung cancer as the doctors will have more time to treat it before it reaches a terminal stage. The survival rates for lung adenocarcinoma have generally been higher than that of other types of lung cancer.

You have a higher chance of getting this type of lung cancer if you are an active smoker or used to be one. Even if you’ve already quit smoking, the negative effects of this activity could still manifest, sometimes years after you’ve kicked the habit. If you aren’t a smoker, we suggest you keep it that way unless you want to deal with lung cancer.

5. Pancreatic cancer

You often hear about the pancreas, but you likely don’t know what it looks like or where it’s located. The pancreas is an organ that is located behind your stomach at the back of your belly. The role that pancreatic cancer plays in your body is the production of enzymes and hormones that aid the digestion of food.

A staggering 85% of all pancreatic cancer cases are comprised of adenocarcinoma. When you have adenocarcinoma in your pancreas, you’ll find that the tumors begin to manifest in the ducts. Doctors aren’t sure why the adenocarcinoma forms in the ducts of the pancreas, but one theory is that it is similar enough to glands with regards to the type of tissue that it’s made out of.

If the pancreas fails to function, it could make it very difficult to digest food. If you get diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, more likely than not, it’s adenocarcinoma.

6. Prostate cancer

The prostate is a gland that sits below the bladder of men. The prostate plays an important role in regards to reproduction. The fluid that protects your sperm from death is partially produced in your prostate. Needless to say, any damage to your prostate could lead to a low sperm count.

Adenocarcinoma targets the very cells that produce these sperm-saving fluids. In a biological irony, the cells that are meant to protect your reproductive capabilities are the ones most vulnerable to attack. Most cases of prostate cancer are adenocarcinoma. To this day doctors aren’t certain about what causes prostate cancer.

That said, there are some risk factors that could increase the likelihood of developing it. One such risk factor is age. Most cases of prostate cancer, whether adenocarcinoma or not, develop in men that are over the age of 50. That said, there have been some cases of prostate cancer in individuals who were much younger.

7. Radon exposure

Radon exposure is another thing that might cause adenocarcinoma. Radon is released when uranium decays, thus homes with high levels of radon are most likely built on soil that contains high levels of uranium. If you were to build a house in Chernobyl, for instance, the levels of radon would be insanely high.

If the level of radon in your home is above 4 picocuries per liter, your home is officially unsafe and you need to take measures to lower the level of radon present. There are many ways to do this, but what’s important is that you keep your family out of the house until the process is complete. You can buy a radon testing kit online without paying too much.

Another area that you should consider testing is a family well. Old wells might have been dug into the soil that was rich in uranium thus increasing the radon content in the water.

""

8. Asbestos exposure

Exposure to asbestos is another factor that could lead to increased odds of developing adenocarcinoma at any point in your life. There is no level of asbestos that would be considered safe for exposure. The irony is that the exposure to effect ratio varies so wildly between individuals.

Someone might be around it for five minutes then develop a fatal illness while someone else could live in a house for years without seeing any negative side effects. If you live in an old house, you should check if your insulation contains asbestos. If it does, you should get it removed as soon as possible Ensure that you hire professionals as someone who is unqualified to remove the asbestos might end up spreading the material across your house further.

Furthermore, you should never attempt to remove it yourself as you are not trained on the proper precautionary measures that you need to take before approaching the material.
