A sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is caused by a parasite, and happens to have a quite elaborate interesting name is Trichomoniasis. This is one you won’t hope to run into when on your sexual pursuits or excursions. It is highly treatable, though… so that’s the good news. It resolves within a few days up to a few weeks, depending on the severity of the case.

It typically receives a diagnosis that is followed by a prescribed treatment (prescription included – typically a large dose oral antibiotic) for both sexual partners. It is transmitted via any sexual contact. It can cause premature birth in women. Men typically have no symptoms. Nicknamed: the trich. Ages most documented with this diagnosis range heavily between 14 – 40 years of age. According to the Center for Disease Control in 2017, this is listed as a “very common” STI.

1. Foul-Smelling Vaginal Discharge

This has been described even as “frothy”… this is a real case here… a real piece of work on this particular STI. You really don’t want this one. Though it is treatable, it’s something to avoid like the plague, so to speak. This has one of the worst cases of vaginal discharge in its category… as one can tell by the “frothy” and “foul” terms. This symptom stands alone… if you experience this, go to your doctor immediately, same day.

This is a priority. Do not put it off. Also, contact your partner immediately and let them know. You can tell them the results of lab testing later. Public health is of utmost importance… let’s kick this STI out of the United States by not spreading it. Let’s let this STI die with our generation by being responsible sexual participants, or monogamists, or whatever.

2. Genital Itchiness

With pests making a home in your crotch, you can expect lots of itchiness for at least a couple of weeks. And that’s assuming you are able to get into a doctor and can afford treatment. It’s not really expensive treatment, but… if you’re really broke… it won’t be a fun way to spend your money, that’s for sure.

Treatment consists of antibiotic prescription, typically. Prevention includes condom usage, abstinence, and monogamy. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, visit your primary care provider (MD doctor) or your OB/ GYN (obstetrician/ gynecologist) as soon as you are able, to avoid worsening of the condition.

Because it’s just not cool to be scratching your vagina in public… and, unless you live under a rock (you don’t)… you’re going to have to be in public at times. Use a condom every time. And get tested regularly.

3. Painful Urination

Cranberry juice just won’t cut it for this case of painful urination… you’re going to need a doctor and a prescription, more than likely. And why risk it… get your butt into a doctor if you are experiencing two or more of these symptoms, immediately!

And stop having sex, immediately. Go ahead and let your recent partners know that you are having a health concern and are getting testing so they can prevent potentially infecting anyone else, too. We’re really paying the piper on this one.

Cranberry concentrate will help clear the bacteria in your urinary tract, but you really need to go to a doctor on this one. They will be able to set your body right with medication. And then… you can make sure this nasty parasite infection never happens again. Don’t be too hard on yourself, we all get into messy situations sometimes. The trick is to learn from it.

4. No Symptoms

Typically this is only the case for men. This is super scary for women because they’re the ones taking all the risk on this particular STI (but really… everyone loses in STI type situations… and there are plenty of them to go around, for real). With this being among the very common STI’s currently… there’s no shortage.

Luckily STI testing seems to be more standard than a couple of decades ago, but, it’s truly still not enough to keep up with the bunnies out there (and by bunnies, I mean young people having sex like there’s no tomorrow). It particularly unfortunate when it’s the young ones who simply don’t know any better because their parent’s frankly sucked or have really bad circumstances and so are not able to communicate to them the life and death kinds of scenarios we are up against these days with loose sexuality.

5. Spotting between periods

If you ever thought you’d like to be bleeding from your vagina more… then you’re in luck with this STI, because you’ll have plenty of bleeding and spotting between your regular monthly mensural cycle. Obviously that is a joke, because no one likes to be crampy, bloated, and bleeding while they’re slaving away at their job 40 hours a week… or at the beach or on vacation or any time, frankly. No one.

That makes this one of the worst (although very common many for STI’s) symptoms. Yeah, that’s right… you get to spend more on tampons, or pads, or whatever you use… spend more time emotional and hormonal, upset and or grumpy, sensitive, or tearful… you get all these negative symptoms with your new STI. Make sure you get retested after treatment if you find out you have the trick.

6.Pain During Intercourse

It’s no surprise that if there is an unwelcome parasite invader down there… sex no longer is quite as pleasurable, and even downright painful. Who wants that? No one… So, use a condom every time. While condoms do not prevent 100%, they typically cut STI rates in half, which is great news for everyone. If that’s not reason enough to chose wisely, I don’t know what is.

Be careful who you get involved with. The distraction this will cause from your life will not change the entire course of your life forever, but it will for a while, and it will on add to your list of negative life events. It’s worth waiting until you are in a long-term stable committed relationship if only to avoid the hell these rampant STIs can have on a person’s life. The trick is to avoid issues.

""

7.Pain in Abdominal Area

That’s right folks… more pain. We may as well be in a horror movie here… because it’s all bad news bears here. If you’re worried you might have the trick… make an appointment with your local health center or PCP. If you find out you have it, don’t beat yourself up… not everyone is raised with such wisdom imparted to them, and that’s not necessarily your fault… depending on how old you are now.

Your life isn’t over if you have it… far from it… but… take time to consider how your choices led you to this point if you do have it, so you can better take care of yourself in the future. If you do have it, you’ll have to tell any recent partners (within the last 6 months) about your STI… and get retested after three months.

8.Vaginal Swelling and Inflammation

‘Cause who doesn’t want a swollen vagina… we’ve got this gem to add to the list. Swelling and inflamed… wow… we’re in for a real treat here, eh? Swelling around the vagina, due to the parasite, is a somewhat unique symptom of STI’s.

And inflammation, almost like a burning sensation, which is also somewhat unique for an STI. Itching and general pain are common, but the swollen and heat type of sensation is rather unique. As one can imagine… with a parasite living in your groin… it’s bound to become inflamed.

Talk to your doctor so you can get started on an antibiotic stat and knock those parasites out of your groin! And, consider how you can avoid this from ever… happening… again. Considering that men typically have zero symptoms with this STI… you’ll have to be extra careful.
