Before we dive right in, it’s important that we get one thing out the way: not all cases of rosacea can be cured. Experts are not 100% sure what actually causes the condition, and indeed it seems that each case of rosacea may be somewhat unique.

But with all that being said, it is also true that we have some very good ideas of what might cause rosacea. And in many cases, following this advice seems to be at least somewhat effective in helping to treat the condition.

If you are suffering from rosacea then you might be very frustrated and eager to try and identify the cause. You’re probably fed up with the burning sensation, and you’re probably tired of being embarrassed by your flushed, red face (which ironically may be making you redder!).

So, it’s good news then that there are things you can try, and that in many cases, they can be very effective at improving your skin and your health.

1. Improve Your Diet

The first thing you need to consider is whether or not you could improve your diet.

The simple fact of the matter is that many of us don’t eat as well as perhaps we know we should. This then, in turn, leaves us susceptible to a range of potential issues, such as hormone imbalances, malnutrition, obesity, oily skin, and more. Many of these problems can easily translate to a range of skin conditions, including but not limited to rosacea.

So, start thinking of ways to improve your diet. Start by cutting out the processed foods that are high in salt and sugar without adding much in the way of nutrition. Avoid refined sugars and other simple carbs that are very sweet (and which can actually irritate the skin), and try to focus on getting a good balance of nutrients.

Another key area to focus on is your gut health. Substances such as probiotic yogurt can help to encourage the existence of healthy gut ‘fauna’ which will help you to break down your food, produce more positive neurotransmitters, and strengthen your immune system. Omega 3 fatty acid is also very good for this.

""

2. Keep a Food Diary

Diet is definitely strongly linked to rosacea, but it’s not just a ‘bad diet’ that might be causing it. Equally likely is that you have a good diet, but one that includes ingredients that you are allergic to. These could include things like dairy, like specific additives, like gluten, etc.

In this case, rosacea might actually be your body’s way of trying to ‘flush’ its system. And in fact, you might also find that alcohol is responsible for triggering ‘flushes’ that make the rosacea come up angrily on your face.

The problem is knowing what it is that is specifically causing the change. This is why it can be a very good idea to keep a food diary – a tab of what you’re eating and how you’re feeling at any given time. That way, you can look for correlations and identify when something you ate might have caused you to breakout.

""

3. Take Cold Showers

This isn’t the most obvious option, especially considering as being very cold can make you red in itself!

But the reason this is useful is that some people believe rosacea to be a condition caused by issues with circulation and the blood vessels. This is why we often look redder in the face after a walk, or after physical exercise. The face becomes ‘flushed’ because the blood has rushed to the head and stayed trapped there.

Taking a cold shower then might help to reduce your body temperature and set you up for a day of looking a little less red.

But what’s better, is that in the long term, taking lots of cold showers could help to train your ‘thermal regulation’. In other words, it could help your body to become better at changing its own temperature by manipulating the vascular smooth muscle. Suffice to say that this could help you to deal with temperature fluctuations in a way that doesn’t cause you to suddenly look red and blotchy.

There are strategies for using cold showers that have proven highly effective. Some of these are taught by the living legend Wim Hof – you should check them out!

""

4. Improve Your Fitness

For almost the exact same reason, improving your fitness might be an effective method for reducing rosacea. When we think of someone who is out of shape, we often think of someone who gets easily red in the face. This is partly due to blood pressure issues: they are red because the blood is being forced to the surface and is not circulating properly. It’s also because the blood vessels are not as used to passing large amounts of blood around and not as used to regulating temperature.

Therefore, doing whatever you can to regulate your fitness can make a big difference. In particular, you should consider participating in more cardio exercise (long-distance running, etc.), as well as engaging in exercises that will help to increase vascularity. Any kind of weightlifting where you are lifting for large ‘rep ranges’ (meaning you lift 12 times or more before putting the weight down) can help to accrue blood in that part of the body and thereby help the veins to become better at channeling it.

""

5. Use Acne Treatments

Acne treatments might be useful when treating certain types of rosacea, though not all of them. That’s because acne is linked to rosacea, though the two are not necessarily caused by all the same things.

For instance, rosacea may be caused at least in part by bacteria or fungus living on the skin. These issues can potentially be treated with certain spot products that are designed to cleanse the skin and kill off throat bacteria.

On the other hand, though, some acne treatments are designed to fight blackheads and work by opening up and clearing out the pores. This can be effective in preventing certain types of acne, but will not be useful in combating rosacea, seeing as the latter isn’t caused by blackheads.

""

6. Remove Products

While adding acne products could help you to rid yourself of rosacea, it’s also possible that the precise opposite could happen (sorry!). In other words, it’s possible that by adding a new product into your skincare regimen, you might actually exacerbate the issue and experience increased acne. The reason for this is that rosacea might not only be a reaction to what we eat but also to topical agents that we use directly on our skin.

If you suspect that a hair product, skin product, or anything else that you use could be causing your skin to react, then try cutting it out of your routine and see if that helps.

""

7. Consume More Collagen

Consuming more collagen is something that is very good for your skin and which may be particularly good for you if you suffer from rosacea. That’s because collagen is useful for thickening the skin and giving it more elasticity.

You can get more collagen by consuming it directly, or by consuming foods such as bone broth. In fact, though, you can get the exact same effect by making sure to get the specific amino acids that the body uses to create collagen.

""

8. Meditation

Finally, you might be surprised to find that meditation can actually be an effective method for reducing and even treating rosacea. That’s because rosacea is linked to stress. Many find that they experience the worst flushes when they are stressed, and it’s also common to find that you experience more rosacea in general if you’re someone who is chronically stressed.

The same is true for related conditions such as psoriasis. In fact, it turns out that psoriasis is very responsive to treatments such as placebo which focus on helping the patient to think they’re going to get better.

Being stressed affects your heart rate, your blood pressure, your hormonal balance and more – so it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that it can also lead to rosacea. Meditation may just be the ideal antidote.

""

9. Avoid Sunlight

One thing that might come as a surprise is to learn that sunlight can actually exacerbate symptoms of rosacea. This is the case in instances where the sunlight might cause sunburn, in which case the blood vessels beneath the skin can be irritated to the point where they become redder.

Likewise, the red skin caused by sunburn can likewise make the rosacea seem worse. When you get a sunburn, a particular section of the electromagnetic spectrum (ultraviolet) will cause damage to the skin cells, and these waves are actually capable of penetrating through the skin. Think of it like microwaving meat and cooking it from the inside out!

What’s more surprising though, is that sunlight itself may actually raise your likelihood of rosacea. This is because the sun is able to increase the antimicrobial peptide called cathelicidin. This substance is used to combat bacteria but can actually exacerbate the symptoms of rosacea. Some studies suggest that increasing vitamin D can actually cause outbreaks of rosacea – with 80% of patients reporting that sunlight exposure causes this. This means it might even be worth avoiding things like vitamin D supplements.

Vitamin D has many other very important benefits though, and so it is important not to completely avoid sunlight. Just consider this as a potential factor.

""

10. Consider Medications

Another thing to consider is that medications you might be taking could be playing a role in worsening or improving your rosacea. That’s because many medications work by altering hormone balances, and this can, in turn, have a number of repercussions that spread all throughout the body. Hormones don’t just control our mood or our sexual impulses: they also control our weight gain and weight loss, the size of our blood vessels, and much more. They might also raise or lower blood pressure or cholesterol.

If you are on any medications and you suspect they may be exacerbating your condition, then this is something to consider discussing with your doctor. There may be alternative medications you can use instead.

""

11. Natural Antibiotics

It’s important to recognize that the link between vitamin D and rosacea is not fully understood. This may, in fact, be a correlation for example, rather than a causal relationship (meaning that high vitamin D occurs alongside rosacea but that one does not necessarily cause the other).

For instance, it may be possible that the elevated level of cathelicidin is due to the body attempting to fend off a bacterial infection.

It has also been suggested that the rosacea itself could be caused by a number of infections – such as the presence of mites even in the skin! In these scenarios, using naturally occurring antibiotics such as garlic might help to eradicate the germs and thereby help to improve recovery.

""

12. Omega 3 Fatty Acid

Omega 3 fatty acid is a highly important nutrient that many of us don’t get enough of. This substance is found in oily fish, some nuts, and a number of other sources.

When you consume omega 3 fatty acid, you naturally improve the ratio of this fatty acid to the competing substance called omega 6 – these two acids exist in balance with an increase in one necessarily causing a decrease in the other. Omega 6 is not bad for us in itself, but too much of it in relation to omega 3 can actually cause inflammation. Seeing as the link between cathelicidin and infections and rosacea may be due to inflammation and irritation, then reducing chronic inflammation in this way could likely be very beneficial.

Not only that, but omega 3 can also directly benefit the skin by improving the ‘cell membrane permeability’ and helping nutrients to pass into the skin cells.

""

13. Reduce Alcohol, Stop Smoking

Reducing alcohol consumption is an effective way to improve your health across the board. One more good reason to do that is rosacea: drinking less alcohol may help you to reduce the symptoms of this condition. That’s because alcohol has a number of effects on the body: increasing the heart rate, raising blood pressure, and more.

Alcohol, in particular, can cause blood to rush to the face in some individuals and especially certain ethnicities.

Simply cutting out these bad habits can immediately help to show improvements in the appearance of rosacea!

""

14. Consume Yogurt

Consuming yogurt may help to improve the natural balance of gut flora and thereby help to reduce signs of rosacea.

What many people don’t realize, is that bacteria aren’t all bad for us. In fact, our guts contain a huge variety of bacteria, much of which is actually very beneficial for us and responsible for a number of important functions. This bacteria may help with the production of digestive enzymes to help us digest and absorb our food and nutrients, or it may help to produce hormones and neurotransmitters that can improve our mood.

What’s more, is that this healthy bacteria can actually combat the bad bacteria that cause damage. One study trialed a drug called rifaximin (an antibiotic) and found that this had a 96% response rate – by reducing the outgrowth of specific flora. The aim is not to destroy all bacteria, but to provide the correct healthy balance in the gut.
