Acne is a seriously unpleasant and upsetting issue that affects a huge number of people – especially during their teenage years. Acne around the face is not only painful, not only potentially itchy but is also embarrassing for many and can undermine otherwise attractive features.

Thus there is a huge industry surrounding the treatment and obfuscation of spots. Creams, ointments, topical treatments and many other products claim to be able to cover up spots and help them to disappear more quickly. Unfortunately, though, many of them fail to work.

The good news is that there are ways to reduce the appearance of spots – you just need to change your tactics slightly. First of all, you should address the root of the problem: blackheads. Blackheads form before acne as the follicles become blocked and inflamed. It’s too late to deal with a spot, but if you can prevent blackheads from appearing in the first place, then you may be able to avoid them ever developing into full-blown spots.

Secondly, stop relying on expensive chemical treatments. Instead, focus on simple things that you can change: like your diet. A number of foods actually cause blackheads and by avoiding those, you can reduce the appearance of acne. Here are 8 to get you started.

1 Potato Chips

Potato chips, or crisps as they’re called in Europe, are great snacks and especially at parties and other social gatherings thanks to their ‘help yourself nature’. While this is true though, they are also far from the healthiest things – and they’re particularly problematic for those with acne or oily skin.

You see, contrary to popular belief, fats are not entirely bad for you. Healthy saturated fats are actually very good for you and so are essential fatty acids like omega 3.

The ‘bad fats’ then are the ones that are added by humans as preservatives and to make things deliciously crispy. Unfortunately, this is also what makes potato chips as crispy as they are, and is why you will end up eating a lot of bad fats if you down a packet in front of the TV. That can then lead to greasy, bad fat around the skin, which can, in turn, lead to blocked pores and sebum which leads to acne.

2 Chocolate

Picture your typical teenager and what do you think? We might think of someone with bad acne, or we might think of someone who subsists on a diet entirely made up of sugary drinks, chocolates, and fast food.

While it’s not fair to stereotype, these ideas do have some basis in truth. And while there are many factors that lead to the acne (including hormonal ones), it’s also no coincidence that both these things occur in our teenage years.

Sugary foods cause acne. That’s because processed sugars like this provide a whole lot of calories and because sugar is actually an irritant. This is why sugar causes damage to our nerves when we have diabetes, and it’s why chocolate is so bad for acne!

""

3 Dairy

Dairy has been shown in a number of studies to cause acne. There are a few possible reasons for this.

One is that dairy actually has an impact on hormonal balance, being filled with hormones that are given to livestock. Seeing as hormones are large what causes acne in the first place (specifically an increase in testosterone causes the skin to produce more oil), this can simply add fuel to the fire and upset the body’s normally healthy balance. As a result, you may end up with more acne.

Dairy can also be an issue for those that suffer from lactose intolerance. This is a condition that causes the body to produce less lactase, which would normally be used to break up lactose and thereby prevent it from curdling in the body.

""

4 Ice Cream

Ice cream is another highly sugary snack that is also filled with the bad kind of fat. Not only that, but ice cream has also been demonstrated in numerous studies to be directly linked with acne and to cause it in many cases.

Ice cream is something that a lot of people enjoy, and so it might come as bad news to learn this is yet another food that is off limits! But while this is true, it’s also true that you can get a very similar flavor from other things such as frozen yogurt. Yogurt, unlike ice cream, is actually good for your acne, seeing as it encourages the production of healthy bacteria cultures which may help to improve the immune system and prevent the bad kind of bacteria that might otherwise live on the skin and lead to the formation of spots.

""

5 Soda Drinks

Chocolate and ice cream are bad for spots and blackheads in part because they are full of sugar – we know this much already. It should come as no surprise then to learn that soda drinks are also incredibly bad for your skin, especially given that soda drinks are actually the worst culprits in many ways!

Did you know that there is as much sugar in a glass of cola as there is in two cream eggs? Next time you drink a can, imagine yourself eating that much chocolate and think twice!

The problem is that because soda drinks are just that – drinks – we often don’t think of them as being responsible for health problems and weight gain. We end up drinking lots of these drinks and then wondering where the weight gain is coming from!

""

6 Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a kind of double jeopardy when it comes to your acne and blackheads. That’s because tomatoes contain not only lots of sugar but also a fair amount of acid. These ingredients together can cause breakouts and are not helpful for your spots.

This is a shame, seeing as tomatoes are otherwise very healthy fruits! In fact, tomatoes are particularly high in antioxidants, which are responsible for protecting the cells against cancer, and for helping to prevent wrinkles and lines on the skin.

Thankfully, there are other ways you can get lots of antioxidants – we recommend that you try blueberries as a healthy alternative.

""

7 Juice

Here’s the thing though: we think of sugar as being something that only comes from sweets and candies, but in fact, it is something that can also be found in healthy, natural foods. And healthy sugar can still cause the same type of damage when consumed in excess.

If you drink huge amounts of fruit juice, then this might be exacerbating your acne. Not only that, but it can also lead to weight gain and even diabetes.

Whiles some fruit juice is very good for you, try to stick to a glass or two a day. Don’t let fruit juice be your ‘main’ source of hydration, but instead try to focus on water. Water is actually very good for your acne and blackheads as it helps to hydrate the skin and flush out the system. Water is actually incredibly good for your health in general.

""

8 Red Meat

Red meat is another food that is usually healthy for you – it’s a good source of protein that contains lots of additional extras such as creatine and coenzyme q10.

The problem is that it can also cause issues that might exacerbate acne. This is particularly because red meat can actually raise testosterone levels. Again, that’s normally a good thing, but not so much when you eat lots!

To be honest, the occasional steak is unlikely to cause a lot of damage. The problem is when you rely on copious amounts of red meat, and especially when that red meat is processed burgers, sausages, and the like. Burgers contain unhealthy additives, bad fats, lots of extra salt and sugar, and all the negatives of the meat as well. Not only that, but processed foods tend to remove the nutrients that are actually good for you – so you don’t get the improved immune system, sleep, or energy levels.

Eat junk food and it might not show on your waist but it will certainly show in your skin!
