Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease or STD that affects over three million people in the United States every year. It can affect both women and men. It can be treated and will go away within a few days to weeks. The sooner a person gets treatment, the sooner it will go away.

The best way to keep from getting trichomoniasis is by using condoms every time a person has sex and use them properly. Trichomoniasis comes from having different partners. One person may already have the STD and can spread to all their other sexual partners. It’s important to get tested often if a person has several sexual partners.

Even pregnant women can be exposed to trichomoniasis and affect her unborn child. In order for a person to find if they have been exposed to an STD like trichomoniasis, there are eight symptoms to look out for.

1. Painful Sexual Intercourse

is a symptom for women when they have trichomoniasis. During sex, the woman will not enjoy the sexual experience because she’ll be in pain. That, in turn, could ruin a stable relationship, especially if the man isn’t experiencing any of the same symptoms from having trichomoniasis. In fact, a person can only get trichomoniasis through intercourse.

Most men don’t have symptoms, so they may think that their sex partner is always experiencing pain during sex. If the pain persists, it could cause other problems for the woman, if left untreated. Once a woman notices she is having pain during sex frequently, she needs to seek medical attention right away to get to the root of the problem.

The symptom may go away on its own but may come back again if it’s left untreated. It may make having relationships complicated because it will be difficult to have a sexual relationship because sex will be painful.

""

2. Premature Labor

could be in the future for a woman who has trichomoniasis. As a matter of fact, when the baby is delivered the STD will be transmitted to the baby, which will cause the baby to have to get treatment right away.

A pregnant woman may have all the symptoms that women have when she has trichomoniasis. She may be doing everything right, but once the baby goes through the birthing canal, it’s too late. The baby will have a low weight since he or she will be a premature baby. A premature baby has a hard time eating and their lungs are immature.

When a woman has premature labor, she delivers a few weeks earlier than her normal due date. Her contractions are more frequent and intense. The stay at the hospital is much longer during premature delivery because every care needs to be taken, plus with trichomoniasis, that time may be extended.

""

3. Itching

is common in men and women when they have trichomoniasis. In women, the itching is in and around the vagina around. This is similar to having a yeast infection and the woman may think getting some Monistat cream may clear the infection.

It may alleviate the itch, but trichomoniasis will still be present. In men, he will have irritation in and around his penis. He may decide to put some kind of over-the-counter ointment on his skin to help with the itch, but it may or may not clear it up. In fact, it might make the trichomoniasis worse. When it comes to itching, there will be some redness, especially if the person decides to scratch the area.

Blisters may form and if the blisters pop, it may spread. If the person is itching in their genitals and don’t tell their sexual partner, the condition will spread to them and may even be worse since the person has been scratching.

""

4. Discharge in Penis

is a common symptom for men who have trichomoniasis. Men who have this symptom may believe that they a urinary tract infection, which causes pain when urinating and discharge in the penis. When this occurs, men will pee constantly and may think the reason that he is urinating a lot is because he drank a lot of fluids.

This may be the case, which could cause the condition to go unnoticed. The discharge in the penis is clear, almost watery. It can sometimes be cloudy, white, yellow, or have blood in it. The discharge can be thick or thin. When he has discharged it may be a lot or a little bit. It varies from man to man.

He may discharge a lot one in the morning and a little in the evening. It really depends on how his body reacts to trichomoniasis. He may even have a burning sensation when he urinates.

""

5. Blood in Vaginal Discharge

is a symptom that women will experience when they have trichomoniasis. It may go unnoticed with a woman that has trichomoniasis when she is still having her monthly period. The only way she may start to wonder when the blood doesn’t go away after a length of time.

For example, if her period lasts for four days, but if she doesn’t know she has trichomoniasis, the blood will linger longer. Symptoms sometimes go away and then come back. When she notices blood, she may also think she has a urinary tract infection, which is a common symptom.

If she believes she has a urinary tract infection, she may think it will go away on its own by drinking more water. As stated before, the symptoms may go away, but trichomoniasis left untreated the symptoms could reappear. If she already had her period for that month and she’s bleeding again, that should be a red flag.

""

6. Bad Smelling Discharge

is a symptom for women to look out for. The discharge varies in color. The discharge is green, yellow, white, or gray in color. The smell may cause the woman to believe that she has some other infection, such as a yeast infection.

As stated before, she may just purchase a yeast infection cream to get rid of the infection, if she’s unaware that she has trichomoniasis. With trichomoniasis, the smell won’t go away, unless it’s treated with antibiotics. Covering up the smell with perfumes and body powder will not get rid of what’s really going inside of the body.

After a while, it will cause her embarrassment to be around other people because the smell doesn’t go away on its own. It may seem embarrassing going to a doctor asking about the odor, but that’s the only way to know what’s going on and get treated for it.

""

7. Frequent Urination

occurs with trichomoniasis in both men and women. As suggested before, urinating frequently could seem as if the person is suffering a urinary tract infection or just drank a lot of liquids during the day.

With frequent urination, the person may experience a burning sensation every time they use the toilet. It’s a good idea to check for blood in the urine because frequent urination blood could be present. The blood may not be apparent, but it still may be in the urine. A person may not even have to use the bathroom with trichomoniasis.

The urge is there to use the bathroom even when a person doesn’t even need to go. A person may not even think he or she has trichomoniasis if they only have one sex partner, especially if they are urination constantly. For example, a woman may believe she’s pregnant because that’s a symptom of pregnancy.

""

8. Genitals Swelling

is highly common in trichomoniasis. A person with trichomoniasis may believe he or she is allergic to something, such as a detergent that caused their genitals to swell. If it’s sore around the genitals, the person may take an over-the-counter medication, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen to help with the pain and inflammation.

The person may even decide to take a hot bath to get rid of the swelling. The swelling may go away for some time, but it could possibly come back. The longer a person waits to get treated for trichomoniasis, the longer the symptoms will remain and cause more issues, such as irritation of the vagina.

Only a doctor can give a person the right treatment for trichomoniasis. It is more embarrassing going around feeling uncomfortable in the genital area than going to the doctor to seek treatment. It only takes minutes to get help for trichomoniasis.

""

9. Tiredness and Lethargy

can occur as a result of a great many different conditions, including trichomoniasis. If you suffer from an underlying condition such as this, then your body will be fighting it in an attempt to try and get you back to normal health. This then means that more energy and resources will be spent on your immune system, and on flooding the area with fluids and with antibodies. That, in turn, means that you’ll have less energy available for other tasks and therefore may feel tired and sluggish.

Tiredness and lethargy can have a great many causes, and of course, it’s unlikely that trichomoniasis is going to be the first suspect. However, this can be a good indicator that something is wrong in the body when it comes to quickly, and therefore it might encourage a visit to your physician.

""

10. Burning When Peeing

is another common symptom of trichomoniasis. We already mentioned that urination could become more frequent and that this might also cause a burning sensation when you go. However, it is also possible to experience this burning sensation without also experiencing more urgency and frequency.

Burning when peeing is caused by a number of factors. This might be due to inflammation and tenderness in the area which is then irritated by the acidity of the urine, or it may be caused by changes to that acidity caused by the existence of the bacterial infection. You might also notice that your genitals burn when you are not urinating.

""

11. Stomach Pain

is a lesser-known symptom of trichomoniasis and is usually felt in the lower abdomen. This is caused by inflammation in the surrounding area that in this case is affecting the stomach region as well as the urethra. When an infection is detected, the body will often react by attempting to flush that region with antibodies, blood, and fluid. While this is beneficial in the long term, it can cause pain and discomfort in the short term and may make the area sensitive and delicate to touch among other things.

Stomach pain
can have many other causes and is not one of the primary symptoms of trichomoniasis.
However, if it occurs in conjunction with these other symptoms, know that this
does not rule out the infection.

Likewise, it
is possible for trichomoniasis to cause pain that radiates out to the back and
to other areas in this way.

""

12. Nausea

is a common symptom of many different types of infection. When your body detects that something is wrong, it will react by trying to rid itself of invading bodies such as bacteria or viruses. This will often involve ‘purging’ the system with vomiting. While you might not actually be sick, you may notice that you feel generally nauseous and queasy.

This can also be due to the fact that your body will be sending more energy to the immune system, and therefore less to the digestive system. That can cause the effect of ‘butterflies’ as your usual digestive functions are suppressed in favor of the more pressing matter of fighting the illness.

""

13. Low Birth Weight

in children. If a mother is pregnant when she contracts trichomoniasis, or if she has a pre-existing condition, then it is possible that this may lead to a low birth rate. We have already seen that the infection can lead to premature labor, which can cause a low birth rate in itself.

At the same time, however, even full-term babies may be underweight as a result of this infection. This can also cause other complications, leading to developmental problems.

Another possibility is that the baby themselves can contract the condition. While this is relatively rare, they can pick up the infection when passing through the birth canal. The good news for pregnant women is that they can be tested for the condition and treated for it while pregnant. Speak with your doctor about your options and they will help to recommend the best course of action. Usually, this will simply involve a course of antibiotics.

In fact, it is thought that trichomoniasis is one of the most common causes of low birth weight in some areas of the world and particularly among certain ethnic groups.

""

14. Increased Risk of HIV

is a complication of trichomoniasis. That is to say that if you have an STI, then this increases your chances of getting HIV. That’s because it means you will have a higher ‘viral load’, making you more susceptible to other conditions.

Those with higher viral loads are also more contagious, increasing the likelihood of the condition being spread through intercourse. This is true even if the patient is using HIV drugs (antiretrovirals). In some cases, the viral load may be ‘undetectable’, though in this case, they are no more likely to pass on the condition.

If you have
HIV, you are also at a higher risk of contracting trichomoniasis, as well as
other STDs and conditions.

""

15. Risk Factors

are always useful to consider when looking at symptoms. Risk factors are not symptoms themselves but are rather potential causes and statistical probabilities that help you to identify whether the symptoms are likely to be caused by a specific condition or not. In other words: do you fall into the at-risk groups, and have you engaged in behavior that might make trichomoniasis more likely? If so, this may make it easier to assign the symptoms to that condition.

Trichomoniasis
is caused by the single-celled protozoan called the Trichomonas vaginalis. This
travels from one person to another via sex and affects the urethra in
particular. This condition cannot spread via the hugging or kissing and does
not infect the eyes or mouth unlike some other STDs such as gonorrhea.

There are one million new cases of trichomoniasis reported every year, suggesting that this is a highly prevalent condition. Women over 40 are twice as likely to be at risk, and that likelihood increases if you engage in unprotected sex, if you have a history of other conditions, or if you suffer from HIV.
