Tennis elbow is, of course, a condition that is associated with tennis, and playing tennis is one of the most common causes of the pain. In fact, over half of all racquet sport players experience this. But in fact, there are many other things that can cause tennis elbow. And the savvy among you might also be wondering at this point – why is it only some tennis players who experience the condition?

Tennis elbow is more technically referred to as lateral epicondylitis. This is because it affects the tendon that attaches the muscle to a bony projection called the epicondyle on the outside of the elbow. Thus, anything that causes inflammation and pain affecting this tendon can lead to tennis elbow. In this post, we’ll break down 8 common causes of this type of discomfort.

1. Sports

While sports are generally very good for us, they also typically involve a lot of impact and a lot of the same movements being repeated over and over again. Without the proper conditioning, and especially if the player doesn’t have the optimum form.

Tennis is obviously the sport that is most commonly associated, but the same thing applies to any sport that involves that same movement – in particular anything involving a racquet. While we’ve already discussed that half of all racquet sports players get this condition though, it’s also true that only 3 out of every 100 cases are actually caused by the games!

Other common causes include games like baseball or even golf. Though golf is slightly more likely to cause medial epicondylitis, which is also referred to as ‘golfers elbow’. Figures!

And depending on how you hold the racquet, this can also increase or decrease your likelihood of developing the condition. Make sure you grip tightly and your hands are interlocked and you’ll drastically reduce the potential.

""

2. Manual Work

Manual work is actually also a common cause of tennis elbow. Anything that involves a lot of bending the elbow, or a lot of lifting large items with the elbows bent. If you lay bricks then or if you work on a construction site, this greatly increases your chances of developing the problem.

Another potential cause of tennis elbow is decorating and interior manual work. For instance, window cleaners and painters are likely to move their elbows in a very similar way, and this can likewise involve applying a lot of force and also using a repetitive motion for a long time consecutively. One way to reduce the likelihood of this leading to problems is to stretch and warm-up before getting started.

Finally, automotive work is also a likely candidate. That’s because you’ll be doing lots of twisting and bending while working on car engines and the like. Try to use different tools and take lots of breaks.

""

3. Repetitive Movement

In general, any repetitive movement that involves bending the elbow can cause tennis elbow and this can include the likes of typing on a computer, or even sewing and knitting.

In fact, even talking on the phone can lead to tennis elbow as you’ll be picking up the phone and putting it down a lot, and holding it in a fixed position with your elbow bent. Have you ever put down the phone after a long conversation and noticed that it feels really painful? Now you know why!

In fact, there are a whole host of different movements that can lead to this pain, in which case it will have a lot in common with RSI – Repetitive Strain Injury.

Whatever it is that you do, taking lots of breaks is an important way to avoid the problem. Likewise, this can help to prevent long-term problems like arthritis.

""

4. Playing Instruments

It’s funny when you learn that you have a sporting injury and the reason for that is that you were sewing too much! The same goes for playing instruments, which you might be surprised to learn can once again cause tendonitis and tennis elbow.

This is not true of all instruments of course – some are far more likely to cause the issue than others. And in particular, one of the worst culprits is the violin – or any other instrument that involves using a bow. The reason for that is that you will be moving your arm up and down and back and forth repeatedly, thereby making the same motion as you do in tennis pretty much – or a host of other exercises.

As you can see then, tennis elbow is pretty much everywhere and will affect a lot of us at some point or another. In fact, you may be surprised to learn that tennis elbow affects up to 3% of Americans!

""

5. Not Allowing Time for Recovery

So, if a tennis elbow can be caused by everything from typing to talking on the phone, the question you might be wondering is why don’t you have a tennis elbow?

The answer to that is that tennis elbow can be more or less likely depending on a host of other factors. For instance, you might find that you have a genetic tendency toward a tennis elbow, which makes you more or less likely to get it.

Likewise, this might depend on your technique and form, and it might depend on other practices. For instance: are you leaving enough time for recovery between games and training sessions?

The thing to recognize here is that tendons take up to 48 hours to recover from activity, whereas muscles only take 24 hours. That means that if you play tennis multiple days in a row for a long period, the damage can become cumulative until you have tendonitis.

But conversely, if you take breaks in between, then you might find that you are able to heal the area enough to avoid injury next time.

""

6. Using Too Much Weight

Another common sporting activity that can cause tennis elbow is lifting weights. If you regularly lift weights, then you will be likely engaging in all manner of movements that involve the elbows.

Remember how we said that you should avoid placing too much strain on the tendons more than one day in a row? Well now think about what would happen if you were to perform biceps one day and then bench press the next. You might be training different muscle groups, but the tendons would be moving and bearing that load both days.

Likewise, another mistake is that you can add too much weight, too quickly. That’s because it takes only a couple of weeks for muscle adaptations to begin in response to heavyweight – but it takes significantly longer (up to a couple of months) for the same changes to occur in the tendons. Thus your muscles might be ready, but your tendons might not.

""

7. Steroids

This is why using performance-enhancing drugs such as steroids can also increase your chances of getting elbow tendonitis. In this case, the danger is that you increase the strength of your muscles much more rapidly than you increase the strength of your tendons. Now you can exert enough force to potentially cause serious damage to your joints.

Another similar issue is when using anything that reduces myostatin. Myostatin is a substance that encourages the break down of muscle and thereby prevents you from getting big and strong. But unfortunately, it is also involved in the maintenance and toughening up of tendons. So when you reduce it, your muscles can drastically overtake your tendons and other connective tissues.

""

8. ‘Locking Out’

Another sport that often leads to damaged tendons is martial arts. This is true of grappling arts that involve a lot of bending at the elbow to try and push each other down and lock each other in place (not to mention aggressive locking of the joints.

But just as bad are fighting styles that involve a lot of punching and blocking. These involve accelerating the limbs quickly, which in turn can lead to injury as you end up ‘jolting’ your joints once they lockout.

The better strategy is to stop your arms just short of locking out, to avoid that impact to the tendons.

""

9. Muscle Imbalance

Muscle imbalance is responsible for a great many different issues affecting pain and discomfort around the joints, and can also lead to numerous other complications such as poor movement and gait.

In this case, there are several types of imbalance that can cause pain in the elbow area. For instance, if you have overdeveloped biceps muscles such as the biceps brachii, but you have not equally developed the brachialis muscle, then you might have unequal pressure on the elbow joint. The brachialis is the primary mover when it comes to moving the elbow joint itself, whereas the biceps are the muscles we associate with movements like biceps curls.

When you have this muscle imbalance, it can cause pressure on the elbows which can then lead to pain and discomfort when trying to engage in normal movements, or even at rest.

""

10. Sewing

While you might think primarily of sports when you consider elbow pain, the truth is that any highly dextrous movements involving the hands can also lead to this type of discomfort. Movements that involve repeatedly twisting the wrist and forearm in particular, can lead to the tendons essentially being pulled across the elbow joint and thereby becoming irritated and inflamed.

One type of work that is particularly repetitive and requires a lot of dextrous motion in the hands – including pronation and supination – is sewing. Here, you will be weaving the needle in and out, as well as cutting frequently with scissors. While sewing machines reduce the need for the former, the latter can still happen a lot.

""

11. Typing

Typing is an extremely common cause of numerous types of complaints affecting the tendons and joints of the hands and elbows. This is because so many of us spend an extremely large amount of time typing as part of our work: in many cases, pumping out many thousands of words per day.

This then requires a lot of movement of the fingers and the hands, which can irritate the tendons in the elbows. Not only that, but this is also a common cause of arthritis in the hands, carpal tunnel, and RSI.

While you may need to type as part of your work, it’s important to recognize the best practices that you can follow in order to reduce your chances of injury. Using the right keyboard – ideally, one that has mechanical switches and doesn’t ‘bottom out’ – can be a very good idea for instance.

Likewise, it is important to make sure that you aren’t resting the wrists as you type. Doing so will actually compress the space where the tendons travel through the wrists and to the hands and fingers, thereby restricting movement and causing a greater likelihood of issues. Take regular breaks, and try to ensure that the elbows are bent at approximately a 90-degree angle as you are typing.

There are more things to consider too when it comes to office work. For instance, the often-hunched position we need to adopt in order to reach the keyboard and see the screen can cause something called kyphosis – a curvature of the upper spine. Trying to control for this while simultaneously ensuring that the hands and elbows are in the right position is hard – but valuable – work.

""

12. Infection

Tennis elbow is a form of tendonitis – meaning that the specific tendon has become inflamed. It doesn’t really matter then what causes that inflammation when it comes to making the diagnosis.

Another common cause of inflammation affecting the tendons is an infection. If you have an infection in your tendons, then you may notice the area becoming inflamed and red, it might also go darker in color. You may additionally notice symptoms such as fever, headache, tiredness, and brain fog.

""

13. Arthritis

Arthritis is another common complaint that can cause pain in the joints and in the tendons. There are many different types of arthritis. Some are caused simply by wear and tear as your every old age and can affect the joints and tendons equally. Others are caused by the body’s own immune system attacking itself and thereby causing swelling. This swelling can then restrict movement, and cause discomfort that affects the area. Arthritis cannot be cured, but once you know what the problem is there are numerous steps you can take to try and improve it.

Speak with your physician and they will be able to recommend treatment to manage those symptoms.

""

14. Gymnastics

While gymnasts have incredibly powerful and resilient bodies, attempting these advanced moves incorrectly is a surefire way to injure yourself. In particular, movements involving the rings and rope climbing can place a great deal of strain on the tendons in the elbow which may lead to injury. If you have attempted rope climb and you woke the next day to feel burning pain in your elbow, then this is exactly what has likely happened. Likewise, if you were performing ring dips only to slip and put your elbow out, you similarly may have a related condition.

Take time to rest and make sure that if you do attempt these movements, you build up to them slowly and are careful not to rush into moves you are not ready for. Eventually doing this will help you to build resilient elbows that actually are far less likely to experience tendonitis and other types of pain.
