Supination is a common health condition whereby the angles of the feet or ankles are slightly curved inward. It’s a much more common condition than you might have thought, and it’s commonly seen as a repetitive strain injury in people who spend a lot of time on their feet or take a lot of strain to their ankles – this can include waiters, competitive runners, parachutists and sometimes even ballet dancers who have seen too much strain to their feet

If you suffer from supination, it’s best to correct the condition as soon as you can using small lifestyle changes – if not, the condition can degenerate to the point where it requires a strict combination of surgery and these lifestyle changes to fix.

Symptoms can be an obvious curve, or they can sometimes be more subtle than this.

Here are 8 signs that you might suffer from the supination of the feet.

1. Inflammation of the Knee

Signs that you have inflammation of the knee are usually easy to spot: The knee will be painful, swollen and sometimes red – this can be worsened by stepping on the knee, and some might even find that getting out of a warm bath and stepping on the knee worsens the inflammation and changes it to a throbbing or stabbing pain instead.

If you have any kind of knee inflammation, it’s important to track down the root cause: Sometimes it can be dietary factors, such as acidic foods that are causing gout. Other times it can be because of other factors that put a strain on the knee, like a knee injury, sprain or commonly supination of the feet.

When it’s due to the supination of the feet, it’s the foot and ankle imbalance causing the inflammation of the knee – and correcting the supination will usually help the inflammation to go down, too.

2. Pain in the Neck

Pain in the neck can be because of different factors, many of which aren’t really related to your neck at all – and any type of neck pain warrants a visit to your doctor for this reason. As one example, sometimes pain in the neck can be a precursor to a heart attack if it’s combined with other symptoms like chest tightness, pain in the chest and sometimes numbness or pain shooting down the arm – sometimes left, sometimes right.

When pain in the neck is frequent, it’s because of repetitive strain that’s putting too much tension on the neck. With supination, it’s almost always the angle of the foot causing neck pain. If that doesn’t make sense, you should realize that craning your neck can affect your feet – and if your feet aren’t stepping as they should, the rest of your body will try to compensate for it, causing a cycle.

3. Back Pain

Back pain can be one of the first signs that you are suffering from supination of the feet, or starting to experience the first signs and symptoms. When your back pain becomes frequent and chronic, you should try to find the root cause of what’s behind the pain – it could be everything from the bed you’re sleeping on at night through to the way you walk; interestingly, both of those things can cause supination of the feet.

The reason supination of the feet will manifest with back pain is because of the fact that when the body’s walk or gait is “off”, the rest of the body will tense up and try to find a balance – in turn, this strains your muscles, and will undoubtedly eventually hurt your back.

If your back pain is due to supination, fixing the curve of your step should be able to remedy the pain.

4. Angling of the Foot

One of the first signs that people with supination of the feet will experience is the angling of the foot, usually inward; this is the defining symptom of the supination of the feet, and it’s what the condition will eventually cause. One of the most important things to remember with supination of the feet – and the angling of the foot or ankle – is that you might not really notice it at first: The symptom might be slight, or it might only be in one foot – and you’ll be experiencing the other symptoms of supination instead.

Eventually, the ankle of the foot will worsen – and this is where supination becomes physically noticeable. The moment you notice a combination of any of the symptoms on this list, you should make an appointment with your doctor to discuss possible foot supination, even if you don’t see the obvious angling of the foot just yet.

5. Pain in the Ankles

Pain in the ankles is one of the first ways in which supination of the feet will start to affect the body; this might happen in combination with many (or most) of the other symptoms that have been mentioned on this list, or it might happen on its own in the earlier stages of supination.

If you are experiencing any kind of pain or strained feeling in your ankles, you should find the cause – whether it’s walking, running, standing on your feet or the wrong kind of shoes; these are all factors that can eventually cause supination instead of just being a symptom.

Pain in the ankles can be relieved by wearing ankle guards, although any worsening of pain and circulation should be reported to your doctor immediately since it might make the condition worse – or be something else.

Pain in the ankles can be treated by treating supination first.

6. Pain in the Ball of the Foot

When starting to experience pain along with the ball of the foot, or along the actual “curve” of the foot, it’s almost always a sign that you’re putting too much strain on your feet in some or other way. This can be because you’re wearing the wrong type of shoes – ones that don’t fit your feet, or ones that have already taken on the individual shape of your foot – or it can be because you’re walking in the wrong way for your body.

Again, both of these things can be factors that make supination worse; if and when this happens to you, the best course of action is to make an appointment with your doctor: They can find the root cause and help to direct you towards the best course of action to reduce the strain that’s put on the foot, ankles, legs or back.

Correcting supination can usually correct further issues.

7.A Different Gait

If you experience that you are suddenly walking in a different way to how you normally would, or you notice that the way you normally place your pressure when you walk has changed, then it could be one of the first possible signs of the supination of the feet. You should look for a combination of any of the symptoms on this list if you suspect that it could be supination, and as the condition grows more advanced, it’s bound to change the way that you walk over time.

A different gait can be noticed in a few ways – usually strain in certain parts of the body, or by noticing that the wear on shoes you’ve had for years have suddenly changed. It might not start with the angling of the ankle or foot as a first symptom. Correcting a different gait is done with conscious walking changes and heel inserts.

8. Seeming Clumsiness

An increase in clumsiness is something that almost everyone is bound to notice about themselves when it happens, although it’s also one of the things that people will easily ignore. When you start to experience a lack of balance and feel like you’re tripping over things more often even when there’s nothing to trip over, it could be supination of the feet causing it.

Combined with other symptoms on this list, feeling more clumsy than usual can be potential signs of supination – and mean that you have to start making adjustments if you suspect this to be the symptom that’s causing it. Usually, these adjustments are small things, like learning to walk in a different way – but they can also include heel inserts or special shoes that have been built to correct the condition.

If this doesn’t help the clumsiness, it can be other things, like imbalances in the ear.
