Nephrotic syndrome is caused by too much protein secreted in the urine. It is a rare condition where fewer than 200,000 cases are reported in the United States each year. With nephrotic syndrome, there is usually damage to a bunch of small blood vessels in the kidneys that filter water and waste in the blood. When a person has nephrotic syndrome the feet and ankles become swollen, which can cause other medical problems.

In order to treat nephrotic syndrome, the underlying cause of the condition has to be treated. It can cause blood clots and infections as well. In addition to the medical professional providing prescription medication, he or she will suggest a dietary plan that will prevent and help with any complications of having the nephrotic syndrome. There are eight possible causes that can lead to nephrotic syndrome. It is important to know what can cause the condition just in case a person believes that he or she could possibly have it.

1. Diabetic kidney disease can lead to nephrotic syndrome because the blood vessels become damaged.

When the blood vessels in the kidneys become damaged, it leads to kidney disease. The body retains too much salt and water in the process, which causes the ankles to swell. Ankle swelling is the main cause of getting the nephrotic syndrome. In order to treat the condition, the medical professional will put the person on high blood pressure medication, including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs).

Both of these medications slow down the progression of the damaging of the kidneys while helping maintain the blood pressure and blood sugar. The ACE medication is the same medication used to treat nephrotic syndrome. If a person is on diabetic medication, their doctor may take them off of it and see how their body responds without it. Too much medication while dealing with diabetic kidney disease may cause other medical conditions.

2. Too much sodium in the diet can cause nephrotic syndrome.

Sodium is in salt and other foods. As a matter of fact, most people eat lots of it when they eat their food. Even when eating out at restaurants, the cook uses salt. By eating too much, nephrotic syndrome can occur because the body is retaining a lot of the salt. When this happens, it causes the feet and ankles to swell. It can be difficult for a person to walk when their feet and ankles are swollen.

Some people have to walk without footwear because it can be uncomfortable. When on a low sodium diet, a person should only consume 2,000 mg of it a day. In order to keep up with a low sodium diet, it is good to have a food diary. This allows a person to know how much sodium he or she has eaten that day without going over too much.

3. A blood clot in the kidney vein is another cause that can lead to nephrotic syndrome.

When a blood clot blocks a vein that is connected to the kidney, it can cause the condition. When a blood clot is in the kidney vein it is also known as renal vein thrombosis. If left untreated, it can cause a tumor to form in the kidneys, which can end up leading to cancer. When a person has nephrotic syndrome with a blood clot, the blood clot has to be treated first.

One medication that is used to treat the blood clot will be ACE and diuretics. These are the same medications that are used to treat nephrotic syndrome. This will allow the blood clot to go away and the doctor can give the person other medications that can treat the nephrotic syndrome unless the ACE and diuretic are helping on their own.

4. Minimal change disease occurs in children when they have abnormal kidney function, which can lead to nephrotic syndrome.

It’s difficult to tell why the kidney is abnormal under the microscope because when the kidney tissue is examined it will show that it’s nearly normal or normal. It’s uncertain as to why a child with minimal change disease has abnormal kidney function. Children with minimal change disease will have to take the same medications as an adult with nephrotic syndrome.

It can be embarrassing for a child because they may wet on themselves at school and cause other kids to bully him or her. This can lead to the child having a mental health problem, such as depression. It’s important that parents and doctors get all of the treatment and information out there to the child so that the child knows how to deal with nephrotic syndrome at all times.

5. Certain medications can lead to nephrotic syndrome, including drugs to fight infections and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

When taking certain medications, they can lead to side effects if not taken properly. If a person is already taking another medication for another condition, such as high blood pressure, the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug may not respond well and cause blood clots for instance.

It’s important for a person’s doctor to take blood tests often to make sure that the drug for an infection or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug responds well to a person’s other medications. Sometimes blood tests aren’t enough. X-rays and CAT scans may be needed to see if there are any changes in any organs, such as the kidneys.

Also, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are taken too often. Aspirin, for instance, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug and if too many pills are taken, it can cause temporary hearing loss. It may also clot the blood if not taken correctly.

6. Membranous nephropathy is a kidney disorder that can lead to nephrotic syndrome.

This kidney disorder causes the thickening of the membranes within the glomeruli, which are tiny clusters of blood vessels in the kidneys. The glomeruli filter the blood to the kidneys and keep out what the body needs and doesn’t need. If the glomeruli are damaged, too much protein in the blood gets into the body, which causes nephrotic syndrome.

The cause of the thickening of the membranes isn’t uncertain, but it is connected to diseases, including lupus and cancer. As stated previously, cancer can occur when there is a blood clot in the kidney vein. When the kidneys are damaged, a tumor can develop and it can become cancerous. The tumor can grow and spread to other organs. A person may end up losing a kidney or be put on dialysis if the other kidney is diseased.

7. High blood pressure can lead to nephrotic syndrome when the glomeruli are damaged.

There is a waste in the bloodstream and the glomeruli are unable to clean it out. This causes the blood pressure to rise and nephrotic syndrome to set in. In order to get the blood pressure down, blood pressure medication will need to be taken. In addition to blood pressure medication, a person will be given water pills. Once the blood pressure is where it needs to be, nephrotic syndrome can be treated.

A lot of the times the reason nephrotic syndrome occurs in the first place is that there is an underlying condition that hasn’t been treated. Lab work is good, but imaging tests are the best when trying to see what’s going on inside of the body. A doctor may make the mistake of increasing the milligrams of a blood pressure medication when he or she doesn’t know if the person has nephrotic syndrome.

""

8. Acute kidney failure is a common disorder that can lead to nephrotic syndrome.

When this happens, a person has to be placed on dialysis, which will remove extra waste and fluids from the blood. The reason this happened is that the kidneys are unable to filter the blood because the glomeruli are damaged. When this happens, waste and fluids build-up, which causes nephrotic syndrome.

Depending on a person’s situation and what their doctor recommends, they made need a kidney transplant or removal of one or both kidneys, especially if the kidney has a tumor connected to it. Since nephrotic syndrome can last for a person’s entire lifetime, dialysis may be needed for the rest of the person’s life as well. On a positive note, a person may end up living a long life with acute kidney failure and nephrotic syndrome with the proper treatment, which includes a low sodium diet.
