Patellar tendon tear can happen to anyone who overuses their knees a lot for jumping and running, for instance. A person doesn’t have to be athletic in order to get this injury. In fact, anyone who puts a lot of stress on the knees constantly can get a patellar tendon tear.

The tendon tears when the person decides to keep putting stress on the knees. Inflammation of the tendon occurs as well as it becomes weaker. The repeated stress on the tendon causes tiny tears, which tries to repair itself, but as a result, it causes the tendon to get worse.

Some people with a patellar tendon tear may not pay attention to it, especially if the pain isn’t too bad. Most active people tend to ignore the pain and continue putting more stress on the tendon. There are eight causes of a patellar tendon tear to look out for.

1. High-intensity workouts

can cause a patellar tendon tear. High-intensity workouts consist of jumping, such as jumping jacks and running in place. A person is pushing themselves to the limit that over time, it could possibly cause a patellar tendon tear. If the person decides to keep working out at a high-intensity level, it will cause the tears in the tendons, which could cause the person to have a difficult time completing their workouts.

Even a simple low impact workout, such as walking could become difficult. The reason it’s become so difficult for the person to work out like he or she wants to is that the body is trying to repair itself, but it’s difficult because of the tears happening. Even if a person decides to not workout at a high-intensity for a while and just do low-impact workouts, it won’t do any good because the damage is done and any activity will cause pain.

2. Recent knee surgery

is another cause for patellar tendon tears because the tendons are weakened. With knee surgery, after a few hours, a person is in physical therapy. By walking on the knee is not giving the tendon itself time to heal. Even after recovery is complete, a person may still have issues when walking if the tendons are weak.

If the person decides to go back to their daily activities, such as running or lifting heavy items, it could have a negative effect on their tendon. Sometimes a person who just a knee surgery who has a physically active job, will be back to work, but he or she is limping because the tendon is weak and can’t heal properly.

Their body may have a hard time healing. It’s not something that is a fault of theirs or the surgeon, but it’s just that the person’s body is different than others.

3. Systemic diseases

can cause the tendons to become weak, such as from the flu. For instance, some people who don’t get a flu vaccination every year still won’t get the flu, whereas others have to get the flu vaccination or they’ll get the flu. Some people are just immune to getting illnesses even if they’re not exposed to anything.

That’s why a patellar tendon tear doesn’t have to come from someone who is physically active. It can occur when a person becomes ill. Even though there are only a few cases of a systemic disease causing a patellar tendon tear, it is still something to look out for.

With a systemic disease, it affects the entire body, so there’s a higher risk that it could affect the tendons. For example, if a person’s body can’t fight off diseases, the tendon could rupture and the person may not even notice it right away since he or she is already sick.

4. Athletes

who constantly jump and run can cause themselves to have a patellar tendon tear. With basketball, athletes have to jump constantly to make a shot. Athletes may not know that they’re damaging their tendons when they land incorrectly on their feet. The same situation can occur with volleyball players and runners.

The joy of the game gives outweighs any pain that they are feeling at the time. With any physically active sport or activity, the person has to constantly put stress on their knees. They are working hard to get to their goal and in the process, they are putting stress on their tendons.

Over time, the tendons not only become weak but causes the person to be unable to continue with the activity he or she was doing. In fact, it can cause the person to not be able to be as active as they were in the past.

5. Falling down

is another reason why many people have patellar tendon tears. When it comes to falling down, it doesn’t have to be because a person is elderly. Anyone can have a fall, whether it’s getting hit by a car as a pedestrian or having a slip and fall inside of a grocery store. Falling as no age limit. Once a fall occurs on their knees, it will more than likely cause a tendon tear.

The person may not feel it at first, but after a while, the person will notice a difference, especially if the pain prevents them from doing normal activities, such as cleaning. An example, of a patellar tendon tear, is when a pedestrian who already had a weak tendon and is hit by a car, the tendon has become weaker. When a pedestrian is hit, their leg will fly up and even if he or she doesn’t already have a weak tendon, it will become weak by the impact.

""

6. Chronic diseases

including rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes mellitus can cause patellar tendon tears. With rheumatoid arthritis, affects the joints. It causes the joints to become unstable and in turn cause weak tendons. As the disease progresses, it will affect the patellar tendon. The person suffering from the chronic disease may not even be physically active, but by having rheumatoid arthritis it could cause patellar tendon tear on its own.

With any autoimmune disease, certain parts of the body are affected more than others. Type 1 diabetic, for example, make no or little insulin. If they don’t get enough insulin, it can make them feel weak. It can weaken their immune system and in turn weaken their patellar tendons, which will start to tear. When it comes to chronic diseases, it is something no one can prevent. It will happen no matter how careful a person is when it comes to his or her lifestyle.

7. Steroids

use has been known to cause patellar tendon tears. Anabolic steroids have been known to cause patellar tendon tears in men who lift heavy weights. Men feel that they can go heavier with the weights and by doing so, this causes stress on the joints and can tear the patellar tendon. When lifting weights, men have to use their knees to pick up the weights.

The heavier the weight is, the more pressure is put on the knees. Bad form when picking up heavy weights can weaken the patellar tendon as well. Corticosteroids are another steroid that can cause patellar tendon tears.

Corticosteroids may be a therapy used to treat any disease, such as arthritis. If the corticosteroids that are given on a regular basis has been shown to cause patellar tendon tears. Corticosteroids are given to alleviate pain and inflammation of a disease that someone is having.

8. Weak tendons

are one of the main reasons for a patellar tendon tear. As stated before, having weak tendons doesn’t have to occur in someone who is physically active. It can occur in someone who has an autoimmune disease that causes the tendons to become weak. When the tendon weakens, small tears occur.

The more a person puts stress on the tendons, the more tears will occur and cause pain and inflammation. The most common causes of weak tendons are by engaging in sports, such as football, basketball, and volleyball. It is called jumpers knee for runners. When patellar tendinitis affects someone, corticosteroid injections are given, which has been linked to weakening tendons.
