Klinefelter syndrome is a rare condition that has fewer than 200,000 cases in the U.S. a year. It is when men have an extra chromosome (XXY). Men who have Klinefelter syndrome are unaware that they have the condition until they run into the problem of conceiving. Men who have Klinefelter syndrome produce little to no sperm. There is no cure for this condition, but it can be treated. Treatment that men may receive is testosterone replacement and fertility treatment.

Once the right treatment is in place, men can live a normal, healthy life. It can’t be inherited. So, if a father has Klinefelter syndrome, there is no guarantee that his son will have it. There is nothing that can be done to prevent it, but there are some common symptoms that men can look out for. The symptoms that a man with an extra chromosome has will progress as he gets older.

1. Small penis and testicles

are common in Klinefelter syndrome. Men will notice that they have a small penis when they are young boys and teenagers. When men have small testicles and a small penis, they are likely to produce less sperm than normal. Some men with small testicles are still fertile, but with this condition, this isn’t the case. Sperm is produced in the testicles, so the penis size contributes to how much sperm is produced. Men will need to seek treatment from a medical professional to get help on how they can become fertile. In order to become fertile, men go through fertility treatments.

Women may think the reason that they’re unable to conceive is because of their age or they’re not healthy. Sometimes it can be because of her spouse having a low sperm count. No over-the-counter treatments will work. In order to get to the root of the problem, men need to get tests done by their doctor.

2. Taller than the average height

is a symptom that both men and teenage boys experience. Most people ignore the height of a man, especially men are expected to be tall. Most parents get excited when their son is tall because they think of him playing all types of sports. In the United States, the average height of a man is 5’9. There are men taller than 5’9 and are healthy. It should cause some concern when a teenage boy is much taller than the other boys in his class.

Parents should look to see if there is a history of tall men in the family. If not, parents should consider taking their son to a doctor who can do some tests to see if he has Klinefelter syndrome. In some cases, the height situation could have skipped a few generations. Since Klinefelter syndrome isn’t inherited, he may be the first one who has ever had the condition in the family.

3. Weak bones

occur in men and teenagers when they have Klinefelter syndrome. When people think of weak bones, they think of not having enough calcium in the body. The weaker the bones, the more fractures a person can have. For instance, men who play sports and have weak bones can fracture their bones easily. The same thing can happen if a man falls down. They may not have fallen down hard, but it doesn’t take much impact to break a bone. Men with weak bones may develop arthritis. It will be difficult for him to do normal activities without assistance.

If a man doesn’t have assistance, it will take him much longer to complete the task because of him having arthritis. Men with weak bones may not necessarily be in a wheelchair. In fact, they may walk around normally, but they may complain at times that they’re in pain.

4. Large breast tissue

is common in Klinefelter syndrome. It is also known as gynecomastia. This can cause men to develop breast cancer. Men with enlarged breast tissue need to have their breasts examined on a yearly basis as well. Men can check their breasts at home as well. A medical professional will show a man the proper way to give himself a self-examination at home.

It’s not to say that a man will develop breast cancer, but it’s a good idea to keep on top of things. Just like with all symptoms of Klinefelter syndrome, not every man will experience the same symptoms, but if he does, he will know what to expect and how to go about getting treatment. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about.

Breast cancer can go undetected in men because they don’t do self-examinations and get yearly mammograms as women do. In fact, when a person thinks of breast cancer, they think of women.

5. Low sex drive

is a common symptom in Klinefelter syndrome. It will be difficult for a man to get an erection, so when this is the case, he will not be interested in sex. It can cause problems in his relationship if his spouse doesn’t know that he has Klinefelter syndrome. When a man does have sexual intercourse, he may not enjoy it as much as his spouse. As stated before, Klinefelter syndrome can go undetected until other problems arise, such as wanting to have a baby. Some men report that their sex drive stayed active for years, but they were sterile.

In order for their wife to have a baby, she has to go through artificial insemination. Some men may not experience having a low sex drive when they have Klinefelter syndrome. In fact, it could be quite the opposite. Men who have a low sex drive can be given depo-testosterone shots, which allows them to have a high sex drive.

6. Dental problems

are common in a man who has Klinefelter syndrome because since he has weak bones, it’s likely he’ll have bad teeth as well. In order to help with dental problems, seeing a dentist on a regular basis could help. On the other hand, a man who doesn’t know he has Klinefelter syndrome may end up with rotten teeth at a very early age. He may put his rotten teeth on a completely different thing, such as eating a lot of candy as a kid.

A man could have always taken care of his teeth and still have dental problems just because of him having Klinefelter syndrome. A man who is unsure of why he’s having dental problems can contact his doctor who can do a number of tests to see if he has Klinefelter syndrome.

Once a man finds out he has Klinefelter syndrome, his doctor can get him in contact with a dentist who can help him with his dental problems.

7. The decrease in facial and body hair

is a symptom of Klinefelter syndrome. Some men want facial and body hair to make them look more masculine. On the other hand, some men don’t like extra facial and body hair, especially if they like going to the beach and showing off their bodies. The decrease in facial and body hair occurs because his development is out of order. Parents should be wary when their son starts developing more slowly than other boys his age.

If he has a lot of bodies and facial hair as a teenager, he may start to lose it as an adult. As a matter of fact, he may have a head full of hair, but no facial or body hair. Some men develop a lot of facial and body hair with Klinefelter syndrome.

The medications prescribed by the doctor for Klinefelter syndrome may cause an increase in facial and body hair.

8. Belly fat

is very common in Klinefelter syndrome because of the accumulation of fat develops everywhere in the body. It doesn’t just stop at the belly. In fact, men have reported gaining weight in their hips. Exercising and dieting may be an option to get rid of stubborn belly fat. A man who loses belly fat and has big hips will end up with a pear shape. That may be uncomfortable for him because as a teenager, he more than likely will get bullied for it.

Only a medical professional can give a man or teenage boy the right steps to take in order to live a healthy lifestyle and how to be comfortable in his own skin. A lot of the times when men start taking testosterone shots and other medications, such as anti-depressants, it can produce additional symptoms on top of the ones Klinefelter syndrome is giving him.
