Unlike the flu, adenovirus infections remain common throughout the year. They do, however, peak in the winter months, much like flu. Around 10 percent of all childhood fevers are caused by these viruses which most commonly affect the lining of the upper respiratory tract, including the lungs. The infection can also spread and infect other organs such as the eyes, the stomach, and the intestines. Although rare, the virus can work its way past the immune system, causing infection to the liver, heart or brain.

Turning the inner workings of cells into virus-making factories, adenovirus hijacks all that the body usually relies on for health and safety, making it a particularly troublesome illness to fight off. The symptoms are many and varied, though the site of the infection is usually the determining factor in how severe and widespread these symptoms turn out to be. Here is a sample of some of those symptoms.

1. Fever

Children and infants picking up a fever is always a worrying and troublesome thing to witness, especially for the onlooking parents, as they are less able to understand what it is happening to themselves and can become really upset and hard to calm down. With a body in a confused and panicked state, the increasing temperatures and incessant shivering are telltale signs of adenovirus that parents need to watch out for.

It’s important to have a working thermometer to hand and it’s a good idea to note down temperature readings on a half-hourly basis. As with an adult fever, the child insisting that they are cold does not justify wrapping them up warm, as the body needs to cool down quickly. Fever in the early stages is a definite hint that adenovirus and some of its other associated symptoms are on the way. Some of the other symptoms are just as many dead giveaways at the fever.

""

2. Nasal congestion

Nasal congestion too, and that oh so annoying feeling of being all blocked up, can be a telltale sign of adenovirus. The feeling like you always need to go and blow your nose is not just annoying, but it’s a warning that a virus is working its way into your system. Of course, children put up with snotty and blocked noses for half of the year anyway, and so it is left to the adults to interpret this symptom as a product of adenovirus.

With kids spending their days in schools, kindergartens or any other place full of their peers, the chances of infection are pretty high, especially when the snot is in full flow, from hand to face and face to hand. Although it is, without doubt, a gross subject to talk about, someone’s nasal passages being all snotty and icky is one of the most reliable telltale signs that adenovirus is present. It’s not an exact science, but couple this nasal congestion with the aforementioned fever, and you’ve pretty much got yourself a case of adenovirus, virtually guaranteed.

""

3. Sore throat

Sore throats can be another telltale sign for the imminent arrival of adenovirus, and kids will be the first ones to let you know that their throat is sore, even after you’ve already heard their frog-like croaky throat. If your kid sounds like they’ve had a heavy night and smoked 40 a day for the last 5 and a half years of their short life, you could well have an indicator that they’ve come down with adenovirus.

There are not really many ways to distinguish between a sore throat caused by the common cold and a sore throat caused by adenovirus, but the lack of swollen tonsils will help you rule out tonsillitis and bronchitis. Usually, the treatment of this telltale symptom is pretty straightforward. Just try to numb the pain with coldness, and yes, ice cream works just fine. The kids will almost be delighted that they woke up with a sore throat when you tell them that.

""

4. Cough

It’s annoying for everyone in the household to have to listen to the regular bark of a persistent cough, whether it’s coming from a cot or a teenage lair. Unfortunately for those burdened with this annoying soundtrack, there’s not a lot the composer can do about it if they’ve been struck with adenovirus.

Just as the red spots are telltale to chickenpox, and the Yankees cap is telltale of a tourist, the cough that comes with adenovirus leaves little doubt concerning whether or not a person has it. It can be dry or productive, but one thing is for sure, it’s persistent. Sometimes a person can cough so much that it makes them sick. It’s particularly distressing to see young babies and infants affected by a bad cough like this, but there’s not much that can be done to avoid this further signpost for adenovirus. Sorry.

5. Rashes

It’s a scenario that every parent dreads. Finding an unexplainable rash on their child. Human nature dictates that they always jump to the worst-case scenario when this happens and it doesn’t take long at all for the glass tumblers test to come out for an airing. After checking and double-checking, obtaining second and third opinions, parents usually seek medical advice for rashes. This is wise, however, the truth is that the majority of rashes are not indicative of impending death.

Many can be telltale signs of fairly manageable illnesses and diseases, such as adenovirus. If at any point anyone becomes concerned over a rash, or if a previously nonalarming rash becomes worrying, medical advice or emergency care should be sought, if only to put minds at rest. The rash for adenovirus is pretty unmistakable when you compare it with samples on the internet, and once this has been established, the panic can stop and the care can start.

6. Conjunctivitis

Waking up in the morning with their eyelids glued together, as if they’ve fallen victim to some cruel prank, is never a nice experience for kids, no matter how young or old they are. Or how mischievous their siblings are for that matter. Conjunctivitis usually takes hold over the course of a night’s sleep and come the morning, its presence usually gives the parents the confirmation they were looking for that their child is suffering from adenovirus.

It can be like the final piece of the puzzle coming together, and as soon as it does, plans can be made to tackle the illness now that its true identity is known. A lot of illnesses share the same symptoms as adenovirus, but there are hardly any that share all of them at the same time, meaning that parents and caregivers can join up the dots and learn from the telltale signs such as ‘pink eye’ that their home, school or setting needs a deep clean to prevent the disease spreading further.

""

7. Vomiting

Kids are gross, really gross. It’s a sad fact of life that new parents become all too familiar with in those precious first few years. All the vomiting, all the cleaning and all the ruined items of clothing and furniture. Yep, it’s all part of the magic of becoming a new parent. New sneakers? Yeah, they’re going to be covered in sick? Just about to enjoy your TV dinner? No, the vomit monster doesn’t think so.

Cute family photo opportunity? Think again, this one is going to become a meme. The puke falling so neatly across daddy’s eyebrows makes it too good not to share with the wider world. All joking aside, vomiting can be a very clear telltale sign that adenovirus is taking hold of the body. The old adage ‘better out than in’ is fine, as long as out doesn’t mean all over the new three-piece suite.

""

8. Diarrhea

As if you needed further proof of just how gross kids can be, here it is in the form of every parent’s favorite late-night adventure, diarrhea. Everyone has had it and no one likes to talk about it, but if you teach your kids good manners, impeccable hygiene and equip them with a basic understanding of how the body works, even young children will be able to know when a ‘runny poop’, or loose stool for those of us who are a little squeamish, becomes something that means their body isn’t as well as it normally is or as it should be.

Diarrhea is a definite sign of adenovirus, as much as vomiting and fever are, If you’re unlucky enough to be struck with four, five or more of these symptoms, you’re not going to be in for a very good time at all, but if there was one that you could swap out, it would probably be this one.

""

9. Chills

People who experience adenovirus infection, notice that they develop a fever as one of the initial symptoms of the disease. When the brain discovers the presence of adenovirus, it signals the hypothalamus to increase the production of pyrogens in the body. These proteins bind to the ends of the patient’s nerves, telling the nervous system to turn up the body heat.

Fever plays a vital role during an infection, and it’s the body’s natural defense against invading pathogens. However, in the case of adenovirus infection, the patient may experience a high-fever that results in chills as well. It may seem strange that the body should shiver while it’s dealing with a fever.

The pyrogens tell the nervous system to increase the basal setpoint temperature in the body. However, there a lag period where the body catches up to the new temperature setpoint, and this results in the development of chills.

""

10. Urinary Tract Infection

In some cases of adenovirus infection, the patient may develop a urinary tract infection, (UTI.) A UTI describes an infection of the urinary tract from the kidneys to the bladder and the urethra. Patients experiencing a UTI may notice they have burning sensations when they urinate, accompanied by mild itching symptoms.

Most UTI’s involve infection of the lower urinary tract from the bladder to the urethra. Women are more at risk of developing a UTI than men, with more than 60-percent of all recorded cases occurring in women.

Doctors treat the symptoms of UTI using anti-inflammatories and painkillers. However, the patient may also gain some relief from drinking herbal teas that kill the invading adenovirus infection. Most cases of UTI clear up on their own in a few days, with only a small percentage of patients experiencing extended periods of the disease. Patients with severe infection may require treatment with antivirals or antibiotics.

11. Bronchitis Infection

Patients with adenovirus infection may develop other diseases as a complication of their condition. When the immune system is in a weak state, it runs the risk of contracting other infections.

Bronchitis is one of the more common complications of the disease, and it occurs due to a bacterial infection of the bronchial tubes – the airways that supply oxygen to the alveoli. The alveoli are the small air-filled sacs at the end of the bronchial tubes responsible for the exchange of CO2 and oxygen.

When bronchitis sets in, the patient may notice an increase in mucus production and the development of an itchy throat that leads to coughing symptoms. As the illness progresses, the patient sees changes in their mucus from clear to yellow, and then green.

Most people recover within a few days, but smokers may experience the onset of chronic bronchitis. This condition may persist for up to 6-months, and it could progress into pneumonia.

""

12. Pneumonia

Bronchitis is a severe inflammatory condition affecting the respiratory system. In most cases, patients will recover without the administration of antibiotic medication. However, in some cases, the patient may progress from the acute to the chronic phase of the condition. This progression typically occurs in smokers who don’t allow their lungs to heal from the effects of the inflammation.

As a result, they develop the chronic form of bronchitis, which exposes them to developing pneumonia. Pneumonia occurs when the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria enter the lungs. People with chronic bronchitis are dealing with the fluid and pus pooling in the alveoli and bronchial tubes – providing the ideal environment for the growth and spread of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria.

Most cases of pneumonia require treatment with antibiotics to cure the infection. Should the patient remain untreated, they run the risk of the bacteria spreading to both lungs, causing collapse and death in infected patients.

13. Pink Eye

Also known as, “conjunctivitis,” pink eye is an inflammation and swelling of the transparent cover of the eye, as well as the tear ducts and corners of the eye. The patient wakes up in the morning to find that they have crusts forming on the edges of the eye. As the disease progresses, the patient may find they wake up in the morning with their eyelids stuck together.

The disease gets its moniker from the way that the virus affects the eye. The inflammation produces a pinkish-red color in the white of the eye. Most cases of pink eye clear up on their own in a few days. However, some strains of bacteria that cause the infection may be particularly aggressive, and require treatment with antibiotics to kill the virus.

People with adenovirus are at risk of catching the pink eye due to their compromised immune system Conjunctivitis bacteria spread quickly, and children are the primary carriers of the disease.

""

14. Neurological Inflammation

One of the lesser-known complications of adenovirus infection is neurological inflammation. Should the virus enter the nervous system, it may attack the nerves at the base of the skull, causing various disturbances in normal neurological function.

As a result of the infection, patients may start to experience involuntary muscular contractions, as well as sudden uncontrollable jolts in the arms or legs. While none of these symptoms are life-threatening, they are cause for concern, as it could mean the presence of meningitis bacteria infecting the patient.

Since the symptoms for adenovirus and meningitis are reasonably similar, the patient should seek an immediate medical diagnosis for their condition. Most of the neurological symptoms presented by adenovirus fade after the infection start to clear, and there is no lasting damage to the brain or nervous system from the adenovirus infection.

Patients experiencing neurological problems such as tremors and convulsions should try drinking some chamomile tea. The polyphenols found in chamomile tea, help to calm the nervous system. This sedating effect reduces the intensity and frequency of the attacks or twitches.
