Osteomyelitis is a common health condition that is known to affect both children and adults, although is more likely to affect those who already have a compromised immune system due to an underlying infection somewhere in the body or due to other conditions and habits which can further compromise how the immunity works, like high blood pressure, cholesterol or being a long-term smoker.

The condition most commonly happens when infection seated somewhere in the body (such as the skin) makes its way through to the bone; normally, the body doesn’t react like this to an infection at all, but with the risk factors in place, it weakens the body’s natural immune response to the point where the infection has a way into the bone – and this is what begins osteomyelitis.

Osteomyelitis can be treated with a strong course of antibiotics, sometimes one that lasts months.

Here are 8 symptoms of osteomyelitis that you should know.

1. Fever

A fever is one of the natural ways in which the body tries to counter infection in the body; by raising the temperature of the body past what’s normal, the immune system attempts to flush out the infection by making the body the kind of environment where the infection doesn’t want to take root – but often times the body’s response in the form of fever only happens when the infection has already entered the body.

Fever should be treated as a separate condition, and the goal should always be to bring a fever back to normal body temperature as soon as possible through over-the-counter medication or medical attention if this doesn’t work. While a fever serves some use, it’s considered very dangerous and fatal to have an out-of-control fever, especially for an extended period of time.

Running a fever for days or weeks at a time is a sure sign of an underlying infection such as osteomyelitis within the body.

""

2. Muscle Weakness

Muscle weakness is a common symptom of osteomyelitis, although it’s not one that takes place in all diagnosed cases. Still, it’s a symptom that you should keep a close eye on if it happens to you because of the fact that it can signal an underlying infection or severe nutritional deficiency in your diet; it can even signal a range of different health conditions that might not be osteomyelitis but are considered to be just as serious.

Weakness in the muscles is never a good sign, and it’s always one that warrants making an appointment with your doctor to track down the root cause.

A feeling of general weakness and fatigue that doesn’t seem to go away even when getting more than enough sleep can also be considered potential symptoms of osteomyelitis, especially when it can be combined with other symptoms on this list such as pain radiating through to the bones, a fever and an infection within the body.

""

3. Loss of Appetite

Loss of appetite is another sure sign that there is something wrong with your health that needs to be addressed as soon as possible, and before it becomes a further problem with your health. There are an array of different things that could cause a general loss of appetite, and that list is filled with diseases and health conditions such as cancer, high blood pressure, infection somewhere in the body and even gut issues – in short, when you are experiencing any kind of change to your appetite, your body might be trying to tell you something and it’s up to you to find out what.

If you experience loss of appetite together with a fever or pain in the bone, it’s likely that it could be caused by osteomyelitis (especially where the infection is already present, whether it’s visible or not) – and when it isn’t caused by osteomyelitis, it’s still just as important to see your doctor and find the root cause.

""

4. Night Sweats

Developing a fever isn’t always just restricted only to developing a fever throughout the day, but it can also show up as an entirely different symptom on its own that’s referred to as night sweats. This is most commonly what takes place when your body starts to create a fever as an attempt to expel the infection out of the body, and this commonly happens at night while the body rests, recovers, and tries to sleep – but in reality, night sweats are one of the symptoms that can cause you to lose even more sleep, and it should be treated just as seriously (and just as quickly) as you would treat a routine fever.

Experiencing night sweats can indicate osteomyelitis, especially if you’re able to combine the condition with other related symptoms seen on this list such as pain in the bones. Other times, night sweats indicate other potential infections.

""

5. Pain in the Bone

Osteomyelitis is a very serious health condition that happens when an infection, which is commonly either staphylococcus or salmonella, enters the body (or is already present in the body from a previous illness and infection) and then from there travels through to the body until it gets to the bone. There are several different risk factors that can make you more likely to develop osteomyelitis, including a generally lowered immune system, high blood pressure, obesity, or an underlying infection that has been present for a long time – recent injury can also increase your risk.

Because of the nature of the condition, pain in the bone which either radiates, stabs, or pulses is considered one of the most common signs that bone infection such as osteomyelitis is present – and if this symptom occurs with any others, an appointment with your doctor is the next best course of action for best health.

""

6. Lowered Immune System

A lowered immune system can be considered both one of the symptoms of developing osteomyelitis and at the same time one of the potential causes of the disorder in the first place. Your immune system is your body’s first line of defense against any infections that are trying to enter your body, and this is something that a healthy immune system does perfectly fine; but when your immune system has been compromised, then you’ll be far more likely to pick up every infection that you’re exposed to instead.

Osteomyelitis can work to lower your immune system and make you more prone to infection and another disease; at the same time, osteomyelitis can also take root in the body when you have a lowered immune system, to begin with, with the lowered immunity giving the infection a chance to travel through the body.

Boost your immunity as much as possible!

""

7. Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are two different symptoms that can mean many different things; there are thousands upon thousands of different health conditions and disorders that can cause these two symptoms as a result. This should underline the importance of making a doctor’s appointment the moment that you notice any symptoms such as this that can be considered out of the ordinary or potentially related to an infection in the body.

Sometimes nausea and vomiting might directly signal a condition related to your gut, while other times the symptom might instead be referring to a general infection somewhere that has traveled or taken root – in either case, make a doctor’s appointment to find the cause. This remains exceptionally important even when the cause of the condition is not osteomyelitis but any of its related conditions.

If you’re having trouble with nausea and vomiting over a long period of time, see your doctor.

""

8. General Infection

One of the foremost causes of developing osteomyelitis is an infection somewhere in the body that travels through the bone. Because of this, osteomyelitis can be referred to as a type of bone infection – and this should tell you just why you should be taking any kind of infection in your body very, very seriously.

Sometimes the infection in your body might be both obvious and visible (like in the case of an infected cut or surgical wound), but other times the infection might already be dormant somewhere in your body – and in this case, it will need to be treated as soon as possible whether you can see the infection happening or not

Unseen infections can be fatal, and if you experience any of the symptoms on this list it could indicate one: See your doctor as soon as you can for antibiotics and proper treatment of the condition.

""

9. Chills

When the body experiences infection, it starts to ramp up the immune system in response to the invading pathogen taking over cells. As mentioned, part of the immune response involves the body producing pyrogen proteins that dock with receptors in the lower back, driving up the body temperature in the infected individual.

It’s important to note that this process is a natural immune response and not the infection causing the increase in body temperature and the onset of a fever. The second part of the process of initiating a fever lies in the hypothalamus setting the body’s new temperature set point. As the set point rises to a higher temperature, it takes the body a while to catch up with pyrogen proteins.

As a result, the infected individual will feel cold and experience “chills” while the body catches the baseline body temperature up to the new setpoint allocated by the hypothalamus. For this reason, people with chills will not feel warmer if they try to cover themselves with blankets.

""

10. Swelling and Redness in the Affected Area

If the osteomyelitis starts in the hip bone, it develops pain, swelling, and redness in the affected area. As the condition infects the bone, it initiates a massive inflammatory response in the affected individual. As a result, the tissues surrounding the bone become inflamed and red, producing the symptoms of swelling and edema in the affected individual.

This swelling and redness occur alongside the pain in the affected bone. While we used the hip as an example, the infection can spread to any part of the skeletal system, resulting in pain symptoms, swelling, and redness in the affected area.

If you notice this problem and fit the risk profile for osteomyelitis, consult with your medical practitioner. The swelling and redness are a sign of irritation causing inflammation, and they won’t go away without medical treatment.

Your doctor is likely to place you on an extensive course of antibiotics to clear the infection. As the medication starts to kill the infection, you’ll notice that the pain, swelling, and redness begin to disappear.

""

11. Malaise

Malaise describes a condition where you know something is wrong with you, but you can’t place the problem. Malaise makes a person feel anxious. They can start to develop paranoia and other mental health problems due to the condition, causing them to overthink their medical situation.

For instance, people with osteomyelitis will understand that they have a problem with their health, but they might not seek medical assistance right away. As a result, they end up leaving the problem, and their symptoms progress. Eventually, they reach a point where they know the problem isn’t going away, and they decide to take action and see a doctor.

While waiting for their doctor’s appointment, they may feel nervous and anxious, wondering if they have a severe health disorder. This malaise will lift after the patient sees their doctor and receives a diagnosis.

Therefore, malaise is not a physical but a mental symptom and doesn’t require any medicine to resolve the problem, just a diagnosis.

""

12. Changes in Walking Gait

People suffering from the effects of osteomyelitis may experience the infection occurring in their lower back and hips, especially after an internal injury to the affected area.

As a result of the impact of the infection on their skeletal system and the pain it causes during movement, the affected individual may start to alter their walking posture to compensate for the pain. As a result, they may create joint and muscular imbalances in their hips, lower back, knees, and ankles.

These imbalances are challenging to correct, especially if the affected individual has adjusted their walking posture over a period of months. After the medical practitioner clears the infection and the pain subsides, the patient may have problems returning to a normal walking gait, requiring physiotherapy.

Leaving these postural problems will result in further degradation of the lower back, hips, and knees. However, with the right physiotherapy, the person can usually make a full recovery to their normal walking posture.

""

13. Loss in Range of Motion in the Joints

When osteomyelitis starts to affect the joints, it leads to a loss in the range of motion in the affected joint. For instance, patients that experience osteomyelitis in the hips and lower back may notice that they lose range of movement when bending over. They may experience severe pain if they attempt to increase the limited range of motion on the joint imposed by osteomyelitis.

Individuals that experience osteomyelitis in the hips and knees, as mentioned earlier, are at higher risk of pain that limits their mobility, with some individuals required to remain in a supported position throughout the day. Patients that experience a loss in the range of motion due to the onset of osteomyelitis should consult with a licensed physiotherapist.

A physio will work with you to help to increase the range of motion in the affected joint. When the condition subsides, you’ll find that you have a better ROM than if you left the physio out of your recovery. It’s important to practice your physio exercises every day to increase the range of motion and reduce pain symptoms associated with the disorder.

""

14. Edema in the Ankles and Feet

Some individuals who experience the onset of osteomyelitis notice problems occurring in their hips, knees, or ankles. If that’s the case, these individuals may also experience the start of “edema” or swelling of the ankles and feet. Edema occurs when fluids are unable to move around the body correctly.

The inflammation and swelling caused by osteomyelitis create edema in the feet, and the effects may be so dramatic that you can’t fit your feet into your shoes.

The increase in inflammation and swelling is causing the edema also limits your range of motion in the ankles, causing pain when you walk. People affected by edema caused by osteomyelitis may need to take prescription anti-inflammatory medication to relieve the swelling.

Icing the ankles and lower limbs also helps relieve the effects of swelling and pain in the ankles. Keep your feet elevated whenever possible to reduce the swelling, and wear a compression sleeve for your ankle if it isn’t too uncomfortable.
