Looking out for the early signs of adenovirus can be pretty difficult, considering how much it resembles a lot of other illnesses from the outset. This common virus infects the lining of a person’s eyes, their airways and lungs, as well as their intestines, urinary tract and nervous system. It’s a virus that gets pretty much everywhere and so keeping an eye out for early signs, whilst tricky, is pretty important.

Kids are particularly prone to catching adenovirus, given the fact that they spend a lot of time mingling with other kids at school and daycare centers. The virus is spread by contact, either directly with a carrier or from touching something a carrier has previously touched. Imagine it as invisible vandal paint, just because you can’t see it, it doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

Here are some of the early signs of adenovirus that you might want to keep an eye out for.

1. Fever

It can always be worrying when children catch a fever, as they really seem to lose themselves and become confused and even panicked at times. This is because the body is exactly that, confused and panicked. The combination of high temperatures and shivering never really seems to fit and despite knowing better, parents can sometimes tend to bend to the whim of their children and wrap them up warm, despite an increasing temperature.

The important thing to be aware of here is that the thermometer isn’t confused, so long as it’s working. What this means is that just because a person insists that they are cold, doesn’t mean they are cold, especially if the mercury or digital reading is telling you otherwise. Of course, a fever could signal the onset of many different illnesses, but it’s certainly one to be on the lookout for if you suspect adenovirus, especially in the early stages of the illness.

""

2. Nasal Congestion

It can be so annoying to be all blocked up, for the person who is affected but also for everyone around them. Constantly telling someone to go and blow their nose becomes repetitive even for the most patient of parents. Adenovirus is not just limited to children, and adults can suffer too, but for some reason, it always seems to be kids that get the snottiest noses.

Picture your typical kindergarten on any typical day, there are probably fifty kids running around with little green trails of slime running from their nostril to their lip. It’s pretty gross, but someone’s nasal passages being blocked up can be an early warning sign of adenovirus. It’s not pretty to look at, but it’s part and parcel of the illness and since it counts as an early warning sign, you might as well use it to give yourself a head start against the ensuing bout of sickness that will inevitably follow.

""

3. Sore Throat

Kids love getting a sore throat. This may sound a little strange and even perhaps a little perverse, but it’s true. Kids love having a sore throat as it is the perfect opportunity to milk a situation to their advantage. You have to take this with a pinch of salt of course, as a seriously sore throat can put someone out of action for a good while, but if the infection is on the mild side, as it can be with adenovirus, some kids feel like they’ve hit the jackpot.

Want some ice cream? Sure, that’ll soothe the pain. Want some throat lozenges to suck on in class? OK, can’t really argue with that and the teacher will understand. Want to speak in a cool croaky voice that puts any suggestion of ‘faking it’ to bed? You got it. Sore throats are one of the most accurate smoke signals for the arrival of adenovirus. Watch it carefully and stock up on ice cream.

""

4. Cough

Looking to steal the title of ‘most annoying symptom of illness ever’ from nasal congestion, make way for the persistent, nagging cough. In the realms of adenovirus, this is usually a winter month’s type thing. Most teachers throughout the land know that a cough spreads like a wildfire, even when half of those coughing aren’t actually sick.

As soon as the silence of a classroom or an auditorium is broken by the first initial cough, the floodgates open and coughs echo back and forth throughout the assembled heads. It’s like a declaration of freedom for all of those who wish to cough.

The trouble with adenovirus is that a persistent and nagging cough really is an early warning sign that something a little nastier is on the way. Sorry teachers, you may just have to ensure the cough orchestra, touring from mid-fall right through to the beginning of spring. What fun! Good luck with that.

""

5. Rashes

Every parent’s worst nightmare is spotting a rash that can’t easily be explained. Thoughts always jump to the worst-case scenario and the glass tumblers come out for a roll across the affected area. Then the parents have to check and double-check, before getting second and third opinions and checking again. The calming truth is, that most rashes are fairly insignificant symptoms of generally non-serious illnesses.

There can be some illnesses that cause rashes to be wary of, but in most cases, it is usually nothing to worry about. With adenovirus rashes, expect a rash that can appear anywhere on the body, spread quickly, and disappear almost as quickly as it came on in the first place. It isn’t pleasant but it’s something to keep an eye it for if you’re anticipating an adenovirus infection. If you’re worried about a rash, speak to a medical professional as soon as you can.

""

6. Conjunctivitis

Sometimes known as ‘pink eye’ and made hilariously famous by a legendary South Park episode, conjunctivitis is no laughing matter for those who have it. Despite having gone to bed fine the previous night, someone with conjunctivitis might wake up with their eyes feeling like they’ve been glued shut, unable to open them and obviously unable to see.

It can be a pretty scary experience for children, especially really young infants with limited language. Adults can suffer from conjunctivitis too, but not being able to communicate about the problem leads to uncertainty and panic for kids, which really isn’t necessary because as long as conjunctivitis is treated properly, it can be solved relatively quickly and easily. Conjunctivitis can come and go on its own, or as part of a range of different illnesses, often signaling their arrival in the early stages. Adenovirus is just one of these illnesses that conjunctivitis can signpost.

""

7. Vomiting

If you’re waking up in the night and rushing to the toilet or the sink in order to throw up, maybe you should stop feeling sorry for yourself and count yourself lucky. A lot of folks don’t make it that far and then have to clean up a pile of puke from the bed or the carpet. Sometimes the hurling can be to exorcism proportions when it arrives as an early warning sign for adenovirus. It just isn’t pleasant.

Usually, when vomiting is an early indicator of adenovirus, it is over pretty quickly as the body does its utmost to reject that which is making it feel ill. The old saying ‘It’s better out than in’ is certainly true with vomit, but there’s a new saying that everyone should get on board with. It goes something like this, ‘it’s better to be sick in the toilet than all over the bedroom floor.’ Vomiting can be an early warning sign of adenovirus, but there are some early warning signs for vomiting that you can look out for too, to save you having to clean the carpets.

""

8. Diarrhea

No one likes to talk about diarrhea, ever. Having to live through an episode of diarrhea can be the making or breaking of a person. The constant need to go and sit on the toilet, whilst contemplating life and its meaning, is something that can get a lot of people down. The smell, the texture, the emptiness afterward and the uncomfortable feeling it leaves behind.

It makes you squirm just thinking about it, never mind reading about it or actually having to go through it. It’s grim and there can be no getting away from that fact, however it can be a really good way marker for the arrival of adenovirus. A lot of people have the misconception that a bad diet makes a person have diarrhea, and whilst this is true in some cases, it is not the sole cause. Infections cause diarrhea in much the same way they cause vomiting, with one key difference that you can work out for yourself.

""

9. Chills

As discussed, a fever is one of the early warning signs of adenovirus infection. At this early stage of the virus cycle, many parents don’t know what pathogen is responsible for manifesting the disease. Many parents confuse adenovirus with influenza or some other form of bacterial or viral infection.

Most viral infections, including adenovirus, create a fever in the infected individual. The intensity of the condition depends on the immune response in the infected individual. While most individuals experience mild fever symptoms, some can run a high temperature bordering the 102F range.

Fever occurs when the brain signals for the production of pyrogen proteins to increase the internal body temperature. The proteins attach to nerves, increasing the temperature setpoint. As the patient’s body catches up to the new setpoint, they may develop chills, even though they are dealing with a fever. The chills subside after the patient reaches the new setpoint.

""

10. Bladder Problems

Patients who are suffering from infection with adenovirus may also notice they develop bladder problems. Patients may find it difficult to pass urine or discover that they have some pain while urinating.

In rare cases, adenovirus can cause the onset of a urinary tract infection. The virus causes inflammation of the bladder, which may also affect the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder outside of the body.

Urinary tract infections can produce symptoms of pain when urinating, as well as an itching sensation in the genitals after urinating. Most UTI’s go away by themselves after a few days, and doctors will advise against treating the condition with medications unless it starts to progress.

Patients with adenovirus may, therefore, deal with some discomfort and swelling in the bladder region at some stage of the infection. The patient may experience symptoms of pain when someone pushes down on their bladder.

""

11. Abdominal Pain

Should the virus enter the digestive system, it causes symptoms of pain in the stomach and intestines. Patients with gastrointestinal infection experience pain, should a doctor press down on their stomach during diagnosis.

The digestive system is one of the body’s doorways to the bloodstream. The intestines are a permeable barrier, and when inflammation occurs in the wall, the gaps in the wall increase, allowing pathogens and toxins to escape the confines of the digestive system and enter the body.

The circulatory system then carries the virus throughout the body, where it produces symptoms of inflammation, pain, and swelling in other areas. As a result, people who are dealing with other forms of inflammatory diseases may find an exacerbation in their symptoms.

Abdominal discomfort typically lasts 24 to 36-hours after symptoms start to present, and there is no lasting damage to the digestive system from dealing with the effects of the virus.

""

12. Neurological Complications

Adenovirus can also attack the nervous system, resulting in numerous issues with nervous system dysfunction and cognitive problems. There is a network of nerves that connect at the base of the brain stem and travel through the face and the chest, as well as down the spine. When adenovirus infects this network of nerves, the patient may start to experience issues with their normal nerve function.

As a result, the patient may jerk involuntarily or experience tremors. Most of these symptoms decline as the patient recovers from the virus, and there is rarely any lasting neurological damage. The patient may also experience a disruption in their cognitive function during the infection as well.

As a result, the patient may find that they struggle with memory recall, and thinking. Patients with a high fever may also experience the onset of delirium, a condition where the patients hallucinate, and they don’t know where they are or what actions they are taking at the time.

""

13. Bronchitis

Adenovirus can cause other health complications in infected individuals. One of the more common complications associated with the disease is bronchitis. Bronchitis is an infection of the bronchial tubes that supply air to the alveoli in the lungs.

Bronchitis causes inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which leads to impaired breathing, and the development of a wet cough. The bacteria start to cause changes in the color and consistency of mucus.

The patient may find that they start to cough up wads of phlegm with a bright yellow color. As the condition advances, the mucus changes from yellow to dark green. Most patients recover from bronchitis in 72 to 96-hours after symptoms emerge.

People who smoke cigarettes run the risk of the condition developing into its chronic form. Chronic bronchitis infections may last anywhere up to 6-months before clearing. Should the patient fail to receive the treatment they need, they are at risk of developing pneumonia.

""

14. Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a severe complication of adenovirus. During the immune systems battle for your health, the body is at risk of developing further infections.

People with bronchitis also experience the same immune system issue. As a result, patients with chronic bronchitis run the risk of developing pneumonia due to infection with the Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Pneumonia is a severe respiratory disease and requires immediate medical treatment to prevent its spread through the lungs. Common symptoms associated with the condition are much the same as bronchitis. However, patients with pneumonia may find that their phlegm turns dark brown with specs in it – the hallmark of bacterial infection.

Pneumonia infection is life-threatening when it spreads to both lungs and may result in respiratory failure. Doctors treat pneumonia using antibiotics to kill off the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria responsible for the infection. In most cases, patients will make a full recovery, provided they seek early treatment.
